I hate to tell you but the aerial and cockpit scenes are of different planes. This is a badly-done montage. Aerial scenes are between an F-14 and an F-5. The cockpit however, is clearly not an F-14 or an F-5. Probably F-18. Look at the wing tips and the pylons. Go to 2:53, you'll see what I mean. The vertical stabilizer seems to be of an F-18.

Yep - the in cockpit shots where you see the pilot is clearly shot in an F/A-18. As you say the wings and pylons are clearly from an F/A-18.

Not only that, but the F-14 squads are all mixed up in shots. First it shows Jay climbing into a Vf-32 F-14B but an F-14D from Vf-31 taking off. Meagan has Vf-213 patches but is flying with Vf-31?

At the end of the scene it looked like Jay was in a F-18C pit???

How can you tell between a F-14 B and an F-14 D?

The main indicator is the TCS and infrared tracking set chin pod on both planes. On the F-14D they were side by side. The F-14D engine mounts (near the tail) are little more square.

The F-14D also had no ECM firings (like the F-14B and late A)

The final way to do it, is by looking at the squadrons and their color scheme. Besides testing and training squads, only VF-2, VF-31, and VF-213 flew the D.

Don't forget about VF-11 the Red Rippers. The Red Rippers and the Tomcatters both transitioned to the F-14D when they moved to NAS Oceana from Miramar in the early 90's.

That's probably what the Russians with their shiny bright new MiG -15s thought about the British piston fighter the Hawker Fury in Korea... Before the old prop plane actually shot down the new jet fighter in a dogfight. Age has little to do with it. If its a sound design and the technology works, its a threat. It's like the F-15: older than the dinosaur, and not a single combat loss. Besides the F-14 is still (at least to my knowledge) the only plane that can fire the AIM-54 Phoenix bvraam.
