this one, Budapest by Blimp, Airwaves, Submarines, Suitcase, I Love you Goodbye, The Flat Earth, Neon Sisters, all pure gems by one of the greatest song-writers and synth masters of al times. So much good music besides the hits. TOP100 with The Fixx, Eight Seconds, Prefab Sprout (no wonder) and many others.
a thing of rare beauty, can never decide between this and the flat earth; both inspired work! By chance today happened to come across this link and can see TD is playing at a venue 3 miles away in Nov 11.......such a beautiful melody...thanks TD X
Ela sempre esteve entre minhas canções favoritas. Pena que as pessoas, de modo geral não tem capacidade pra entender o tamanho da obra desse cara. Enfim, é mesmo pra poucos.
I never knew my Dad until I was grown man. Before I graduated from high school my artist father moved to Hollywood California. He did well. When I was a man I jumped on my first plane ride out of Texas and spent 6 weeks with him on the Hollywood streets. I even had a part time job. That summer I heard this song and said to myself. This Hollywood. He's captured it. A depressing melancholy place of disappointment for a lot of star struck delusional people.
As for this song, it reminds me of a girl I dated briefly in 1992 when she lived in New England but then moved away to southern California. But even more importantly, Dolby and many other artists remind me of my brother, who I lost in 1997, not to suicide but to a terrible illness. I use music, which was his greatest love, as a way to stay connected to him. Regardless of memories and past pain, this song will always be one of my all time favorites.
@Topkatt88 I believe that Mr. Dolby has a couple of songs about a girl that he knew briefly. Both of their fathers moved frequently because of their jobs. He fell in love with her one summer on a beach and wrote the song 'Pirate twins - Europa' about her. She became a famous person in LA and he a pop star in England. He talks about seeing her after a gig where the crowd is thronging around her. He tries to get close and shout her name but her body guards shove him away. That summer on the beach
It's a shame that US radio needed "She Blinded Me With Science" to put this guy on the map here back in the early 1980s. Sure, it's a great pop song, quirky, funny, and all of that, but it's probably Dolby's "worst" tune (and I use that term in quotes very loosely and only in a comparative sense when taking his other music into account). His best songs have never been heard on radio, but by lucky listeners of his albums. Dolby is one of the most underrated songwriters of the last half century.
Playing this in the brightness of a spring sunday afternoon and it still chokes me up (literally.) He painted a picture that has followed (haunted me) all these 30 years. God bless you Mr. Dolby.
I read the first comment posted and the tears just started running down my face. I am roughly the same age and I too was a young teenager listening to this song thinking the same things, but when I got to the part where your brother committed suicide it devastated me. I am so sorry.
This song became a replay on my turntable in High School back then and can't tell you how after 10 years found myself in the hills above old Hollywood, and was lucky enough to see a deer at 3am. Thomas Dolby made an album that I am sure my children will enjoy 30 years later.
i dunno really why this is one of my favorite songs of all time - but somehow when I was in California back in the 80's this song seemed to put everything into perspective. I once did see dear in the hills above Hollywood at 3AM, and realized only someone who really had been there and looked closely would ever see such a thing. Suicide will never change the world; anymore than the invention of the 6 gun.
This and Budapest by Blimp are the two pinnacles of TD's work. Some of the new stuff isn't bad, but even the best moments sound uninspired and mechanical. Fortunately, there's always this stuff to go back to.
I have developed a software synthesiser which I think Thomas Dolby would really love to use-How could I get a copy of my software to him?Any Ideas anyone?
Can someone explain to me what this song is about-I love this song I remember listening to it on tape all those years ago on a walkman traveling on a train to a girl I was totally in love with, but ultimately it did not last and this song always reminds me of her, even though I am happily married now this song still makes me think of her, that one 'perfec't girl.
I'd be happy to share what I know. I have played it since it came out.. but am mostly a bassist/guitarist. It's mostly partial chords is how I think of it. More implied than ... normal chords lol
@AdamsApple1963 Yes, but individuals like Thomas Dolby should have received more exposure. His musical talent is just extraordinary. Nowadays what we see/hear out there is Lady Gaga and other senseless singers.
Exquisite on so many levels. He, more than any other artist I know of, expresses how the human heart feels in an artificial, digital, machine based world.
the man makes LA spiritual!!!!!! What amazing story telling!!! Transendent confusion based in Los angeles that makes perfect sence. Sublime sence at that......and the skies are warm and sunny... warm and sunny.....
This song struck me so hard in my teenage years. I wish I could've saved her. I wish I could've taken her away from him but alas, that was the world she had chosen, that was the script she lived in.
My brother and I used to listen to this song as bright young teenagers ready to take on the world.
I took a long time for us to figure out what the song was actually about - at first we thought it was abstract lines and loved it for that, but the real meaning is all the more powerful, especially for me 25 years later with my brother already 7 years in his grave after his own suicide.
To listen to it now is sad, depressing, comforting, and ultimately beautiful.
@PortSustGroup Sorry to hear about your loss , my sister departed left in different circumstances but the pain is still the same,I have no words to make the pain any less, but music and sharing has given me the chance to share they were here jx
@PortSustGroup Hi,Just read your comment and it really made me sad, sorry for your loss,I know how it feels to lose a brother.I don't know why these things happen but maybe one day we all meet again-I hope so,I really think we do,I think we have been here many times before and will keep coming back.
My brother was a massive fan of Dolby and I inherited his record and tape collection after his suicide. I can't listen to this or most any Queen song without both good memories and a lot of pain.
@PortSustGroup Wow, thank you for sharing - I used to play this song in my bedroom, over and over and over - until I knew it by heart, and then some - that was 1985........25 years later, I think it's brilliant still. I'm so sorry about your brother........so many of the people I loved have died
@losghost I had "The Flat Earth" on tape a long time ago (those square plastic thingies for you youngsters).... still have it boxed away, I think... got it on CD as soon as I could... and yes, this is my fave Dolby song...
I still have this on Vinyl.Bought it when it first came out in '83 (i think). It was a brilliant follow up to his prior album, yet it didn't hit big on the charts was it received high marks from reviewers.
I still enjoy it,on CD,though.Hyperactive was my least favorite song on the album.
I enjoyed this, on a lonely Saturday night, having spent the day watching some old movies, good and bad (including one where California does indeed "tip into the ocean"). Such a lovely song, and one of the few uses of the Fairlight CMI synthesiser/sampler that doesn't sound unnatural.
