@dillfire I know it wasn't the final ep, still I did find out he picks Sheryl in the second film. Supporting couples were more adorable, if anyone has seen Macross SDF, they'll see how wonderful the Mentradi + human couple, Max & Millia were wonderful, especially since they moved on past the love stage & had a baby by the end of the series.

I have to point out, that there were greater coupls in the series, that no one is paying attention to. Like Ozma & Cathy or Klan & Micheal... Oh that one was a heartbreaker. :c

Man, it's so hard to pin which girl Alto likes, I see the comments here about Alto wanting to kill Ranka in the final and Sheryl & Alto being lovers while Ranka was gone & that's not totally true. He was looking after her, like anyone would a dear sick friend who's dying, he also was never god at pushing Sheryl off when she kissed him. He had great difficulty in trying to kill Ranka in the finale, he wasn't going to just let her rot. It was about stopping her if she had defected.

@Esty2326 You don't make love with a "good friend". Alto was confessing to Sheryl (according to the scriptwriter) when she shut him up. He was the one protesting when *Sheryl* wanted to put an end to their relationship (because she gave up LIFE, that moment).

Ranka was just a dear friend. Nothing else. The girl had unrequited feelings for him. Kind of mix of Mao Nome and a bit like Minmay.

Second movie put an end to this sham of 'triangle' (if Kawamori remarks about it last year didn't).

@thethessaliah You sound like a die hard Sheryl/Alto fan & that's cool dude. I already know they end up together and I thought it was poor writing and plot. Big surprise that he picked the girl with tits & sex appeal who constantly showed herself in his face & had not much else to do but hound him even though she was a celebrity. It was poor story writing in my opinion, especially thier relationship starting because she's dying. And that's how I feel about it, I don't expect you to agree.

@Esty2326 Actually I'm a die hard MACROSS fan (not much of an Alto fan... Sheryl and Ranka fan). Anyone who was fan of the franchise would know Sheryl would win Alto since day one. Let's review the facts:

Tsundere. Doesn't get along with the protagonist first? Older than the other girl?

Vs younger girl compared with Mao Nome and Minmay with powers like Ishtar (the three former "losers" in triangles?).

It was rigged since the beginning.

And I'm a great fan of the series beyond the characters, I'm looking forward to the next race of aliens and hopeful advancement of technology for the space colonisation fleet, however considering how long it took them to reate this after Macross 7.. I'm thinking I'm gunna be an old bitch before that happens.

@Esty2326 It was really paying attention to the Macross tradition. In all the two girls one guy, the one who wins the triangle was always the older tsundere who used to not get along with the protagonist. Ranka could have been renamed Triangle Loser and the result wouldn't be less obvious (she was an amalgam of all the previous losers!).

Aren't you forgetting Macross Zero? It came before Seven.

The next series or OVA or whatever will come out in 2012 for the 30th anniversary.

Macross needs to change up it's tradition, but I was glad they didn't do 2 guys, 1 girl again because Macross 7's love triangle was so annoying.. Or rather Mylene was stupidly annoying. u-u

@Esty2326 Mao was eleven... XD It was a no brainer since the beginning. Shin would have been seen like a pedophile. Anyway, she ended up having a better life and becoming Sheryl's grandma.

I doubt Macross would change the tradition. It's like changing the power of song and the transforming mecha.

Macross 7 triangle was ridiculous... seems Mylenne ends up with Gamlin anyway (Basara never returned to the fleet). Macross Plus?

@thethessaliah Creepy, I thought Mao was older cause she didn't look [physically] like any 11 year old I've ever seen. Honestly, Mylene was less developed than her at 14 yrs old, I recall that Mylene & Gamlin left the fleet to find Basara & make him tell Mylene if there was a chance, or to let her say she loved him just once.. Which I thought was dumb.

Macross Plus? I saw the film version, I really liked the Zentradi descendant & found the human + human love line dull, especially how he dies.

@Esty2326 Nope, she was eleven... XD; The CD reunion reveals Basara never returned to the Seven fleet (while Mylene and Gamlin did. So if they find him or not was a mystery). Then that Triangler game of Frontier pairs them together. ...Honestly, Basara would have NEVER given Mylene a chance, anyway. He is worse than Alto in being oblivious.

I liked Isamu. Guld and Myung were okay. But I never really liked the love triangle. I preferred Isamu with that blonde girl?

@orulyon2 Klan was talking about his love for *Frontier* according to the script writer commentary. He was willing to kill Ranka who was his *excuse* to fly for when he was immature, for his love to the people of Frontier now he grew up as a man.

Anyway, Sheryl won the triangle.

Kind of obvious since the beginning (all Macross triangles end up the same when a kawaii young girl competes against an older tsundere: the latter wins).

After watching this t.v. series there's the 2 part movie. (New scenes and a different storyline added. I think the movie will conclude who Alto chooses to be with. Looking forward to it!

Don't get me wrong but I like Sheryl too. It's just that Ranka's story to stardom got to me and I like more of her songs; and I am rooting for her to be with Alto. That's all there is to it.

Or do you not remember when she found out Ranka was getting Alto a birthday present and afterwards PURPOSELY invited Alto to leave with her off the planet and elsewhere? And then she'd use her body to seduce him? Mhm, she was a REAL piece of work, that 'diva'. Whereas Ranka was just herself, and didn't need to act like a cold bitch or use ruthless tactics.

ALSO: Experiment bit isn't an excuse. Or do you forget Ranka was ALSO an experiment? And she was ALSO used by Sheryl's manager and that other crazy military-tard. Sorry, but those excuses are invalid IMO, because BOTH girls went through that, and in the end, Ranka proved to be the better person by giving Sheryl another chance at life, whereas i'm SURE Sheryl would have let Ranka rot if it had been the other way around!

All in all, Sheryl's just looks and a sour personality.

Have you forgotten Alto *WAS* going to kill her? If you read the commentary, Alto *would have killed Ranka if wasn't for Sheryl* Sheryl's life being saved by Ranka was actually resulted of good karma,

Sheryl saved Ranka's life, through Alto. Ranka saved Sheryl's life, through Alto too. The girls saved each other. Alto was kind of a tool.... LOL.

SHERYl wanted to save Ranka. Even the light novels make it clear, Alto was willing to let her rot.

If you heard the spoilers of the second movie, Sheryl SAVED Ranka's life in EXCHANGE of her own (she pushed her unconscious body to Alto and safety, letting herself sucked into space instead). She was miraculously saved by the Vajra later (with Ozma). Alto acted like Klan did when he lost Michel, not growing close to Ranka at all (while when Ranka left, Alto was Sheryl's lover). Then after she LOST the triangle, Ranka saved Sheryl's life with a blood transfusion.

Girls love each other too.

@nikluvtoeat Because he's a man, who wanted a woman, not a little sister. It's not that Ranka isn't a good person, it's just that she's not mature enough for an adult relationship. And she didn't connect with Alto the way that Sheryl did. She didn't understand Alto, and Alto didn't understand her.

By the end of final film the more mature to begin with film Ranka doesn't really lose to Sheryl in terms of maturity and has truly grown up. Her connection with Alto is deeper too - all of which makes her obviously unrequited love all the more bittersweet. Poor Ranka never had a chance, no matter how you look at it and how she changes or grows.

@ShinRanka Well I haven't seen the second movie yet, only read some bits about it on animesuki. I did see that she was a stronger character in the first movie, so I can only assume that was also the case in the second movie. But just like the original Macross Saga, if you've seen it... Minmei was childish in the series, but much more mature in the movie. The outcome of the relationships were still the same, even if the journey was different. And in Macross, the older female always wins. Always.

@JustinStrife I've seen all Macross so yeah, I know. Sheryl and Alto (esp. Alto) had some notable changes in their character too, Sheryl is way less tsundere for example and more "hippie" (you'll see what I mean)...with Ranka it's more case of how she's developed, she had least amount of backstory etc. revisions I think. I never "shipped" Ranka because it was painfully obvious she didn't have a chance. Film making her a childhood friend was the last straw... and the older tsundere always wins.
