Yes, I remember this series. There was a scene where John Hannah is in a brothel looking through a two-way mirror at Stratford Johns being poked with a cattle prod. Then Stratford Johns looks up at the two-way mirror and winks. Weird.
I saw this on telly in the eighties. I thought it was stylish, deep and strange (i.e. good television). I always remember that sinister wink Stratford Johns gave to the camera. Glad to see from the clip above that it still looks good and stands up very well. It was undoubtedly one of the best and most memorable pieces of television from that decade. Would love to see it given the DVD release it deserves.
@FlyingPuma112 Yes I do and would love to upload but Universal Pictures would remove it in a heartbeat, putting a strike towards suspension against this entire account with its rarer clips.
@griff1958uk Yes, I vividly remember that too. John Hannah is talking to a wee boy and Strattford Johns calmly walks by, pushes the kid off the bridge and winks at John Hannah. Certainly made you sit up and gripped you right from the start. Wish they'd release this on DVD. Don't think it was ever released, even on VHS. Just read the novel and now want to see the TV show again. Oh well.
I remember seeing the advert for this in 1987. With powerful, synthesized music over it, it made a mark on a mind as young as mine back then. Should be released on DVD.
Yes, Bill Nelson did the music. Based on Frederic Lindsey's 1984 novel. A bit convoluted. I recall seeing it when it first came on the screen in May 1987. A Young John Hannah...
Thanks for the info, Amy. I might try and get that novel one day. The Scottish actor who stops Hannah from getting headbutted is James Cosmo who appeared in The Sweeney (Hard Men) and The Pros (Runner).

Watched this twice in the min-late 80s, usually comfortably pissed. Remember it as deep and interesting. Know where I can get it (any media!)?

How about uploading the trailer for the Brond series (Stratford Johns flips the boy off the bridge)? Would love to see that again!

Didn't Stratford Johns push a kid of a bridge in this series? I've still got the 12" single of the theme tune.

I loved the theme music to this, "Secret Ceremony" by Bill Nelson.

I met one of the cast of Brond last year (Susie Maguire), at a writing retreat in the Scottish Highlands; very talented lady.
