This is one of the funniest incidents in music history.I love Syd's music but I still feel like he needed to go away from Floyd, everyone benefited from it
@MrFreedomGotAnAK He was ready I think to get away from it since 1967. He only lasted in the music business for a few more years only because I think that was all he knew. He had abandoned painting, his first love, for this job in the music biz, but it was too much to handle. All them people on you day and night, groupies, the drugs, and the pressures from the label and managers. Drugs played a significant role but I also think other more personal factors were at play aside from his fragile mind
@mejasourus I must say I warmed up to Roger Waters as time wore on. I watched the entire interview this came from and realized that he genuinely cared for Syd. Although I must admit I still believe (my opinion entirely) that the songs about Syd were more in tune with making money than reaching out to a friend. But I think he regrets the way things went down to a degree and now sees that without him there never would have been Pink Floyd. It was crappy how Syd left, but there was no alternative.
syds great, but roger waters and gilmour were great song writers, they were all great, It's true that syd showed them the door to great music, but they opened it and experienced it themselves. you can't ignore their talent and creativity because of syd.
As far as I'm concerned, Syd was the floyd. Its like taking steroids away from Arnold Schwarzenegger. Still bulky, but just not the same.. I feel like post-Syd floyd is definitely missing a dimension of intensity that only Syd could produce.
I have no interest in the Syd Barrett era... it was noisy drugged out late sixties stuff that doesn't interest me anyway. Post Barrett is Floyds best work.
@Boogie1master lol are you crazy? Pink floyd make better after syd left they wouldnt not be what they were if he didnt left...they were really good with syd but if he keeped on the band they would not make meddle / dark side if the moon/ ...they just make 1 complete album with syd...
Well, given to the "Have you got it yet" story and the lyric of "Jugband blues" it looks like Syd, despite being somwehere far away most of the time of late 1967 / early 1968, was still aware of what´s happening, that they are slowly moving him out. And he told it to them in his songs - "it´s awfully considerate of you to think of me here" (that you even let me make ONE song for the whole album) and "I´most obliged to you for making it clear, that I´m not here" - no more a band member...
@MichalFokt Well put! I'm a fan of Syd's despite people saying Floyd was better after he got fucked. It wasn't better. It was more accesible and more straightforward. After Meddle Pink Floyd sucks bar couple of tracks (Green is the colour, Have a cigar & Welcome to the machine spring to mind) and were getting so pretentious with their concept albums. Syd never underestimated his audience. Because he was one of us. The others, like he says just didn't get it.
@666cfc All there concept albums are realing amazing pieces of work.Syd was crazy, you can tell from this interview. They should have helped him,,but to let him continue on would have been insanity on their part..I think animals is my favorite album..It is bloody brillant. To each his own..If you did not like those concept albums,,which is a lost art.I dont think any band today could tell a story and make a theatrical album like they did??Thats your choice..I believe in the freedom of music...
@mdelair420 I'm not saying that these concept albums are bad, I just don't like them as much as the earlier stuff which IMO were much more challenging than, say, Dark Side or Wall or Animals which become annoyingly tedious after a couple of listenings. Wish You Were Here is the only one I still listen to while Meddle(not a concept LP) is the best. As far as your arguement that Syd was crazy, so what?! Beethoven was out of his skull but we still hail him as the greatest composer ever!
@666cfc First off its not a arguement..Second you have the right to your opion..I know beehtovens story so what? i hope you the best.I personaly love animals. It has brillant word play and poetry...Musically it's kickass, but if you dont like it thats all good with me..To each his own i say...peaceout and have a good hoilday dont eat to much, lol
@mdelair420 Haha! Should have read this one couple of days ago! I'm stuffed as bear. To put it this way anyone listens to Pink Floyd is A in my book. A+ if it's earlier stuff though! Haha. Just had too! Happy holidays and hope you get to eat at least half of what I did! Thinking about moving into my mother's basement!
@666cfc I have chronic illness and dont eat well..I also have chronic pain as well..If not for my mom i would be dead..No question?I lost my job from this chronic condition...I wish you all the best..Floyd is great all the time..I listen to Every thing from Bach to Sepultura. So i understand life can throw you some bad and some good..Sometimes it sends a tital wave..Like it did with me..You seem real cool ..I'll sub you ..You can sub me if you want ,if not its all good .Peace and happy 2012??lol.
I'm glad Pink Floyd went on to take their early legacy right to the bank & make lots of money without Sid.
Just taking the piss! Seriously... it must have been a weird, disconnecting experience to be a remaining member in that band when Sid wandered off in his own 'haze' of drugs and strange behavior. Creative people may be very fragile, as we all know.
The Music Biz rewards 'stronger' people most of the time.
@TubeFreakJonas In a way it was better for Syd to be kicked out of the band but then again they should have given him more credit than he gets now. Yeah they have given him a lot already, but honestly there NEVER would have been a Pink Floyd without Syd. The soundscapes, the echo guitar with a slide, the instrumentals, all of that was put into motion by Syd. If he never would have joined the band they would have been little more than a crappy covers band. That's what they were before Syd.
@scottudell I believe they have done a good job keeping Syd name synonomous with the Floyd name...Wish You Were Here was all about him, there are refrences to him in almost every album after he was gone...years later, they still made sure Syd got his royalties paid to him....seeing as how Syd didn't want to be disturbed I believe they did a great job for their friend
@k0stil , I agree that roger waters and the rest of pink floyd gets unfair blame for syd barrett's departure. While Barrett's songs with Pink Floyd are classics (even the demos like Scream Thy Last Scream), by the end of 1967 he was horribly erratic live, and I get the impression the band tolerated it for several months before they reluctantly decided he was becoming a liability. In my opinion, Pink Floyd continued to put out great stuff til The Wall, despite the early dire predictions.
@cbc51. Yeah I've always thought the same thing about Barrett and jim. Both lyrical geniuses and brilliant frontmen both completely absorbed in what would lead to their self destruction. They even both had thier little episodes when performing or recording. Jim just never got to the point where he really lost his mind. But both were amazing artists. May both of them RIP
I have the DVD that this is from. Very interesting story. I may be off the mark, but I've kind of thought of Syd Barrett's life as kind of like Jim Morrison's and the Barrett-led Pink Floyd as sort of the English Doors. When you think about it, both bands were similar: jazz-influenced rock, psychologically-disturbed lead singer (not to insult Barrett or Morrison), poetic lyrics, strange subject matter in the music.
@CobraXHrdRckr My views on Roger Waters and the post-Barrett Floyd are that he and the band maybe took Syd for granted and possibly even made things worse for him by kicking him out. That and I think the post-Barret Pink Floyd were using a sound that Syd wanted and even got close to doing (Wolfpack sounds like the '70s Floyd) but no one in the band wanted to do, that is until he left. '70s Pink Floyd is pretentious to me compared to Syd's band. That's only my opinion of course.
@scottudell You're not alone in your opinion. You wouldn't by any chance be from London, would you? I hear that there is an underground scene in London that feels that Pink Floyd wasn't Pink Floyd after Syd Barrett left.
@scottudell Yeah, let's not forget the saxophone and female singers that they ended up criticizing him for suggesting, only to end up hugely using that themselves. "Great Gig in the Sky" doesn't even have any vocals but Clare Torry's.
I wish they had renamed themselves after the second album. In a way there'd be less ill-feeling about it.
You have to admit, though, Meddle is an amazing album. My favourite post-Syd. But I'm definitely a Syd era fan, too. Love all the unique sounds and variety.
@scottudell Another thing is that despite his state, Syd really wanted back in the band, and would sometimes show up to their concerts pointing his finger at David saying "That's my band!" He'd also show up backstage, only to have security remove him. He'd show up in the studio, too, possibly even as late as Atom Heart Mother.
They could have talked to him more during the Wish You Were Here sessions, but I think they were all too shocked.
Finally afterwards, he wanted nothing to do with them.
@groovyhippyman that's bullshit, he got right then that there was nothing to get. the strange thing was that while syd was so far away it looked like he came back to make a little joke
