  • omg thanks so much for posting this because i needed an informational video about methodist people and the spread of methodism and this helped so freaking much!!!

  • I converted from Methodism to Catholicism..

My parents made me hate methodism, such ignorant people. Im gay and the Catholic Church is more accepting to me.

There are only 12 million methodists in the world. There are over a Billion catholics in the world.

Methodism to me is like Mormanism. It was started by a man less then 400 years ago compared to the catholic church started 2,000 years ago.

    Never again.

  • I'm sorry you had a negative experience with the Methodist Church. I can assure you that there are many Methodist churches who are more then welcoming to members of the GLBT community. No church is perfect, and individual congregations vary on their viewpoints in many areas.

  • Anyone knows why John Wesley started the Methodist church and what did he say about it?

  • ummm... where did the torture talk come from? I don't seem to remember that in Methodist history. In fact, as you can see from some of our other videos, we're very active in helping the Native American community, not forced conversion.

  • a lot of "conversion " techniques were pulling up fingernails and torture. my savage ancestors the native americans didnt need the white mans God and still dont. Great spirit dont need blood or sacrifice.

  • Iam a methodist and a member of the united methodist youth fellowship and I love listening to bible stories its because I'm a methodist...lol..

  • Great video.Always enjoy listening to the story of the Wesley's :-)

  • Um i was always curius about this, what do methodist believe in? How is it diffrent from catholic religion?

  • It's different in some aspects such as prayers and they don't have private confession with their pastor, however, I did watch a video from one Methodist Church that revealed they do believe in the real presence of Christ in their Eucharist and wine. They also believe as Catholics do in doing good for others. However, the Roman Catholics and Methodists are totally alike when it comes to their love of God. I am a Catholic and I know MANY Methodists whom I have great respect for and love greatly.

  • The UMC is more liberal than the Free Methodists.PCUSA is more liberal than the PCA. Other examples of liberal/conservative would be ELCA and Lutheran-Missouri Synod, American Baptists and the SBC.

  • Just got to add that some of the pulpits are actually in the grounds of the church,ie. the church yard and they have not been moved ever since john Wesley preached from them. Just thought this may interest you.

  • I live around Blackburn, Lancashire England, and there are many churches in and around my area were John Wesley actually preached himself, the pulpits that he stood in to preach his surmons have been retained, the churches are very old now.

  • very good!

  • I appreciate this lesson of history ..i'm a former Presbyterian (Calvin) and now a worshing Methodist...the more I learn the more i like..thanks

  • I myself am Methodist and my girlfriend is Presbyterian. So Sundays for us we always spend seperate! (The two churches are only about 5 mins apart from each other).

  • wow, that's sad, that you let mythology come between the two of you. You two must not be too serious... lol

  • thanks for helping me with my project

  • Thanks. That was very informative.

I'm a United Methodist and trying to find out more about my religion.

I have a question about it I put up on my account earlier today.

  • I'm a United Methodist. Teach adult bible classes. I love the emphasis on social justice. Contrasts nicely with my fundy, guilt-laden upbringing. Thanks for the post.

  • I'm a United Methodist. Teach adult bible classes on Sundays. Love the emphasis on social justice as opposed to spreading guilt for constantly failing God (my upbringing). Thx 4 the post.

  • New here to this You Tube...was looking for a video for my Blog...can't figure out how to do it yet...but found this very interesting to listen to...I'm sure I've heard it many times before during church services...but, my memory isn't what it used to be! Thankx for sharing!

    Skye.

  • I dont think im Methodist or Catholic. Actually Im not sure what religion I am. I belong to the religion that believes in helping people and being a positive example so that I might help future generations prosper for all of mankind, and showing love to my fellow man. Which religion is that?

  • Try looking into Unitarian Universalism.

  • No thanks. Im an atheist. I dont need a deity to help my fellow man or to dedicate myself to helping future generations. I do it because I want to, not because I fear damnation or that I might get more stars on my crown in heaven. by the way, read Duet. ch.13 vs 6-10 and remind me why christians worship a god who commands those to kill family members who choose a different religion. Im atheist not because of evolution, but because of your gods holy word. he is a complete jerk. amen.

  • I'm not exactly sure what brought up your little absurd rambling. Quite frankly, you weren't even in this conversation. On a side note, mind telling me how He is a complete jerk? I look forward to your INTELLIGENT response. Instead of quoting one thing out of the Bible, read the sentences before and after; then respond.

  • Your correct. I responded to the wrong comment. This is why I sound like I am 'rambling'. My mistake. I was responding to a fundamentalist. But if you want, read the chapter and verse that I gave and explain why Jesus condones stoning Hindus, Buddists, Taoists, etc.., to death, even if they are wife and kids. 'Jerk' isnt the word I wanted to use, it was just more PC for this website. Im looking foward to your response as well.

  • Haha, okay. Ya fundamentalists are a pain in the ass. I'm not sure which chapter that is, but I'll have a look. Remember, most, if not all protestant denominations take the Bible literally. Their philosophy is: "If it's in the Bible, it's 100% correct and means exactly what it says." Catholics and perhaps some other non-protestant denomination think of things like this as metaphoric.

  • I haven't read this chapter so I can't explain to you how this one might be, but for others it is clearly metaphoric language. When Jesus says "Gouge your eye out if it causes you to sin" He just means you'll have to take extreme measures to abstain from sin. Certainly not cutting your eye out.

  • Well, there is no misunderstanding Duet. ch.13 vs 6-10. and it is not metaphoric. it clearly states that if you do not believe what they believe, then you must kill those who believe differently and burn their city and their possessions. and christians have the gaul to point the finger at muslim doctrine and call it barbaric. sacrificing goats to a deity and stoning people for different beliefs is barbaric in my opinion. apparently christians find it ok. you should read the old testiment.

  • Don't worry..God doesn't believe in atheist, therefore atheists don't exist.

  • Does this mean that I dont have to burn in a lake of fire for eternity?

  • athiesm is a rigid and silly as fundamentalism

  • Is it silly to want proof or evidence? or would it be wise? Even Moses needed a burning bush, and the apostle Thomas (doubting thomas) needed to see Jesus and his wounds before he believed. Or does your deity think we arent that important to show us what we need to believe? Your god is 'all knowing' right? then he knows what I need in order to believe in him/her/it. Ive been searching for the truth most of my life, and your deity has not revealed itself yet. so what am i to believe?

  • everyones saying they're methodist......but I'm Jewish. I feel out of place.

  • Sorry that sort of thing happened.

  • My family are Methodist from the Philippines, thanks alot for the video.

  • Thanks for the history. I am a former Roman Catholic. My husband was raised as a Methodist. Our little son goes to the Lutheran church. Today, we attended the United Methodist Church for the first time as a family.. I was very impressed with the hands-on, human approach. No faceless, nameless souls in this church! JM

  • Wow, my Dad's a Roman Catholic, and so is the rest of his family, but me...while, brethen, I say hello.

  • There are any Methodists in Ghana and other African countries. In Ghana, Methodist schools are the best-Kofi Annan is a porduct. He's also a good Methodist.

  • I am a United Methodist and I married a United Methodist AND we attend worship on a regular basis.

  • Without asking him directly, I believe that Steve felt it was better to leave out this part, rather than have to explain the complicated nature of the church's official founding (Wesley wasn't a fan of starting a new church, and technically speaking he ordained Coke and Asbury "superintendents," not bishops. Then again, he might have just forgot.
