This film was just a cheap flick...come on! A film that has the leading man become...a GEEK?
Really, any half way talented writer could have come up with a better story about con men (and women). As Trash, it's campy...but as art? Not. Under light everything and call it Noir...but as Noir goes, it's not on a level with the best. Corny at best.
I really don't understand why Zanuck or others never liked him in this role. I feel the opposite. I think he was magnificent. I am a fan of Tyrone's and I always thought he should have received the recognition he so rightly deserved an Academy Award. If Kirk Douglas received an honorary award why can't Tyrone Power!
I've always hated the cop-out "Hollywood redemption" ending of this otherwise great film. For a true noir it should have ended with Powers' character desperately accepting the job of geek, thereby sealing his damnation.
@OrfamayQuest Yes, perhaps, but that's not anything like the one-way street to Hell of the geek. The geek is introduced early as a terrible fate, and logically that's where I would have ended it. I think Power would have, too, but I can't think of an A studio that would accept such and ending for commercial reasons. B's yes, and that's why we have such great noirs.
This was the first movie I ever saw Tyrone Power in and it is certainly his strongest performance. I remember thinking that he got what he deseved because he was such a bastard. Great movie.
This film , also I believe, released under the name "The Geek" Made a great impression on Me , Powers greatest picture , if you havent seen it ,GET IT , its Fantastic !!
Undoubtedly. Another great one is "Mask of Dimitrios" with Sydney Greenstreet & Peter Lorre. Allegedly, Darryl Zanuck had no faith in this project at all. Ty Power had to virtually-beg to get it made. Zanuck threw them a minuscule-budget, and assigned George Jessel to produce, as he had had a background in carnys. My mom told me she remembered seeing this on the "lower-half" of a double-bill(around 1948) here in L.A., proving Fox had no faith in promoting it at all! R.J.
What this clearly is, is what's called a "rough-cut" of the orig. trailer -- hence the lack of advertising graphics, etc. Possibly it's all that remains. There is NO diputing the power of this film, however: Even after half-a-century, it's still incredibly strong stuff-- kudos to Mr. Power, and director Edmund Goulding for pushing to get it made!
@beki611 yeah TP, Rock Hudson and Max Von Sydow are my two three favorite actors not because of the entire body of their work but one or two perfect masterpieces that nobody else can even come close
great book and movie; the author was one who came up with word, "geek," according to him. i love the idea that psychiatry no different than any other con job.
Not pleasant but anyone with an interest in movies should watch this film; you don't know what "cinema noire" is 'till you have watched it. Classic exchange of remarks: How could anyone stoop so low? Well, he aimed too high!
Well, folks . . . Gray & Walker ARE attractive, but don't forget---in her day, Joan Blondell was built like a brick . . . "comfort station."

@Claudius131 I never thought it was a real redemption--basically he and Molly were going to end up as Pete and Zeena.

Excellent movie, follows the novel very closely. A clinic in acting, down to the smallest part. Very bleak and dark.
Interesting trivia: both the novelist and the director committed suicide.

Double-bill this along with Kubrick's " The Killing " and you have a film-noir evening at the cinema that can't be beat.
