I lived in CR for over a year , speak Spanish, and it is a beautiful country, but there actually is a lot of petty crime and sketchy areas. Plus the (men at least) tend to be super macho, arrogant, and yes, do hate non Ticos. For what it's worth, I've spent a lot of time in Brazil, Mexico, and Cuba with no problems and lots of local friends. Plus due, to its proximity to Colombia, there is a huge coke/crack problem which exacerbates the crime problem. It's a weird place for sure. Pura Vida?

On a positive note - while at a bar on Playa Hermosa 5 years ago, I stupidly forgot a bag with our passports, a camera and a few hundred dolloars. We drove all the way to Tamarindo before I realized it. I called the place, they said they had the bag but didn't know about contents. I drove back in the dark (adventure!) and they had the bad and everything in it. Nobody took a thing. Nobody even looked inside, they just put it aside for safe keeping.

so if i keep a big safe, or a lockbox in my hotel room, then theres liek no possible way it'll get broken into or fucked with, is there? does that happen often when things go missing from hotel rooms cuz if everywhere else is a potential hazard then you would assume that you're hotel room would always be untouchable

@fuckamerica109 lock boxes definitely help. We've never had problems in any hotel we've stayed at. But we never leave anything of value in plain site. Most hotels are secure here..... so if you take a little precaution, you won't have any trouble.

I still say if people did just a little homework before they visited here, they wouldn't need it. 1,200 passports missing or stolen last year,,,,guarantee, about 1,100 of them didn't have to happen....just sayin. In my view, stationing police at the airport is Costa Rica taking some responsibility for others irresponsibility. (I realize I'm in the minority thinking here.)

Good job. Because of all the thievery, every store requires you to turn in your backpack when you walk in. Everyone is suspected to be a thief. My friend got murdered in Costa Rica for a couple of bucks, Another friend had $153,000 dollars in Banco Nacional and the bank closed his account and stole the money, period.
