Can anyone tell me how long the battery life would last? I'm not big on gaming anymore but I would still like this laptop because it's performance seems outstanding. Would be nice to run various programs and such. But I'm also going to need a nice laptop for school and stuff (the main focus). It's stated that this laptop can last 6 hours. I highly doubt that with the kind of power this is constantly running. Can anyone please tell me its battery life? Also, does this laptop heat up often? TY

@soccer8595 Dude was pretty retarded, I have one (proof is on my channel; have likle 6 videos of it), and I got about 5 hours of battery screeen dimmed, wifi on, and alienfx off. Gaming is pretty awesome on it, plays crysis 2 maxed out pretty well

Receiving mine soon, can't wait. Although the on board graphics is a bit a nuisance for gaming laptops as by default the Intel graphic cards sometimes doesn't let nvidia take over in some games. ( GF has a XPS with this feature)

Intel has a way of messing up in the graphics department, so I wasn't all too surprised. You can manually launch the game via right click or set the settings for individual games with the NV panel.

For improved boot time, add an SSD drive yourself or via dell.

@runbmp The Alienware M14x uses Nvidia Optimus to switch the GPU. It's not really the Intel GPU screwing anything up, its just that sometimes the Nvidia drivers haven't added a profile for certain games or apps, resulting in the computer using the integrated card when it's not supposed to.

@nicholaslimck Thanks for that clarification, definitely makes allot of sense. Wonder if there is a possibility to disable the intel graphics and just have everything run via NVidia. I looked within the bios for the XPS 17 but couldn't locate anything.

@runbmp Well, the reason why the Intel graphics are even used would be due to the much lower power consumption compared to the Nvidia graphics. This allows the laptop to have better battery life. However, if there IS an option to disable the integrated graphics, I wouldn't know yet, haven't got my own M14x yet. :) Anyways, if Optimus screws around with you, you can just use the Nvidia Control Panel and add the game into the Optimus list, should then switch when it should.

@nicholaslimck I haven't found a disable on the m14x, and from the looks there isn't one.

The laptop works great however with the latest bios update A03 (which it comes shipped with) seems dell has severely down clocked the NV 555 core when unplugged. (battery issues)

other users prior to A03 they were able to get a manual OC to 400Mhz without batt shutdown failure.

Its a minor let down, but otherwise its a very nice laptop experience.
