To be fair mate as POWs they are entitled to treatment under the Geneva Convention. The Geneva Convention forbids the shooting of unarmed men and women.
You're right they weren't civilians, they were soldiers but you just don't go around shooting unarmed soldiers. That was one of the crimes for which Nazi officers were sent to the gallows, they executed British, French, American and Russian POWs.
