Well it was hard for me reading this book because it took a terrible turn of events that was just depressing and awful, but then as it wrapped up, I realized I really loved it all. It was a good conclusion to the series. My only wish is that she would have patched up with Gale and just said they were friends, but I guess I can see that happening, that it just wasn't mentioned. Overall this was an extraordinary series.
Did the Capitol children ever actually go into the hunger games? It never clarified if that ever happened. Just that Coin dies. Snow dies. Katniss gets carted off someplace for a while until they declare her mentally unstable from grief and then send her home. I also didn't like how she never got to explain why she killed Coin, i just wondered if all the remaining characters knew the reasons for why she did it.
i LOVED the first two hunger games soooooooo much!! best books EVER and they are my favorite of allll time!!! but the third just sucked. everyone died - finick, prim, team 451 - and i also feel like peeta died also. he was BARELY in this book!!!! i wish they had a cure for him and everything would be okay and i wish there was no bombing that distroyed 12, and i wish that finick and prim especially didnt die :( the writing was really confusing in this book. but i can not wait for the MOVIE!!! <3
i feel like Peeta was hardly in it and i really wish Peeta turned back to normal and he never did. I wanted to be like katniss i love you!!! but no it never happened. boo
And I completely agree with the "capitol Hunger Games" thoughts you had, like really?! And Prim's thrown in death... ugh. I'm gonna be thinking about this books non stop.
I'm so glad to know I am not the only one who feels this way haha. It was amazing yet really surprising and heart breaking. But I agree with every single thing you said (:
It was really good. /: I wish we had more Katniss and Peeta. They were together all the time and I felt that this book didn't give enough of that. They should have had lots of scenes with Peeta and Katniss. Their love WAS The Hunger Games. Their love was so REAL, and it was touching. My favorite part was in Catching Fire, when Katniss and Peeta kissed. (LIKE REALLY KISSED) and she found out that she really loves Peeta. I hated Mockingjay. Too much war.. We didn't really get to know Gale either..
You saw her as a puppet because she was. She was a puppet until the very last few pages. She was used by a leader on her own side and that was the whole point of her journey, she made her own choices but she was still just a piece in their games. Everything she did was a sacrifice that was built on the initial sacrifice she made to save Prim in the beginning. The author wanted to bring out the reality of war and no matter what you lose in the process it's still important to fight for freedom.
It was chaotic because that is what war is. I felt prim needed to die because she is what kept Katniss' anger blazing. Although, I don't liek the way that was written becasue it was so blown over and what are you talking about when you say that it just felt like Katniss was thinking about the past because being in the hunger Games twice and leading a revolution would leave a lasting impact on somebody. Katniss wasnt really a puppet, in the end she shot Snow. she could have let her spread terror
i really liked the book expecpt i think prim didnt really need to die. i mean katniss took her sisters place in the hunger games to begin with and then prim dies. and finnick's death was sad too.
to be honest i thought that was the point that you built an attatchment to the characters then she killed them off and also the change the characters because after you have been through all that and all the seeing people dead peeta got hi jacked it messed him up katniss got messed up to the point of no return but peeta cleared her head katniss cleared peetas they both wanted the other to live i see it as finnick and annie they help eachother but it was a good book

What was the book that Katniss made about? Like the story of the rebellion? Anyway I feel like the book was driven on revenge and the darkness of human beings, not justice and fighting for good.
The end of the 3 book pissed me off. I didnt know what was going on, the setting changed alot. One minute she (katniss) is crying with the cat (buttercup) because of Prims death, and then the next minute she has two kids with peeta. I mean WTF!?!? Who are these kids names! Whats going on!?!? But i would rate it 4/5 because of confusion.
i think the 3 book was differant than the first 2. evreyone was out of character in some way for some sort of time. i think this book was fast paced and katniss was being a puppet. i could name lots wrong but in the end i love this book:)
I think what Suzanne was trying to show with Prim and Finnicks death how realistic war really is. But yur right I think that if one of them if either should have died not both.
I'm still upset that Cinna died. I'll never forget when he said "Don't worry. I always channel my emotions into my work. That way I don't hurt anyone but myself." It really upset me when they beat him to death. I also hated Prim's death. Seriously? We already had our second little sister, Rue, killed in the first one. Did we have to have our first sister killed too?
The ending i really didn't like. They didn't go into detail with Gale he basically just randomly left. And i wanted Gale and Katniss....... But i think she rished the ending and i didn't like that at all. First 2 were great, loved them. This one was eh no really good
I love the book I agree with you it was quick they really didn't go into too much detail but I loved the fact it didn't have a sugar coated ending as the rest of the books like twilight. I think katniss been through so much throughout the books and it's good that she that she pick peeta because peeta gives her life and hope when gale has so much negative all he wants to do is fight and she doesn't need that know. But it was a war story not a romance book. The deaths were shocking but death is d
it made me question humanity and told me that there wasn't really a good side to any war, both sides do horrible things. it's war people and if you didn't catch on katniss kind of goes in to post dramatic stress. it was so real to me. this book in the end filled my eyes with tear and chilled my bed.
I finished Mockingjay just the other day, and it was a really different reading experience compared to the first two books because this is the only one I've read in English. But I'm really glad I decided to read Mockingjay in the original language.
I've cried this much because of a book before. To me the saddest part was Finnicks death.
The only thing I didn't really like was the last chapter. It was just too much time on not enough pages.
I loved it. but being 10 years old I didn't fully understand it. but Suzanne Collins is an awesome writer.she made it descriptive enough so I could imagine it. I feel the same way you do.not on either side.
You can never be too old or too young to appreciate a great story! I suggest re-reading this story in the future. You'll find that your reading skills will have improved, and as you mature, the story will open up in a whole new light! And I completely agree, Suzanne Collins is a wonderful writer!
The only part, for me, that had tha "gasp factor" was when they were in the captial circle and Gale got pulled into the house by the peacekeepers and was callin out for Katniss to kill him but she dn't undrstnd.
The whole book was VERY VIOLENT like you said. And if there wsn't some kind of grusome killin, there was some boring slow part with no story development. It seemed as if Suz didn't have an endin and was rushing for deadline somewhere in the middle and was like "whatever" and wrote it.
I agree. I hated the ending...Um no let me rephrase that I wasn't fond or the ending... both Peeta and Katniss were crazy! LOL do they really need kids. Gale just left Katniss without a car and did his "cool new job"
The whole killing Snow this was really LACK LUSTER, seriously a build up for like two books and he just died by himself and Katniss didn't get to kill him? WTF!
i feel happiness and anger because i always imagined it that the war would end and all the people wold like get what they were looking for, and like in the end they all get together for a dinner or smth like that. i mean in the end they just threw gale out of the story what the heck, and petta i mean of all the things in the world they brainwash him??? well it is good that they still end up together and i agree the book was fast i mean to the hospital, to war, killing Finnick witch was no good.
I felt like you when I first read the book. I had felt betrayed by Suzanne Collins. But now that 3 months have passed, I'm starting to appreciate her genius. No war is clean cut, everyone is brainwashed to an extent. This book really portrays all the mixed up emotion, and how messed up things can get. The only reason all of this started was because of Prim, and now she's dead. Now we clearly see that the point in the story wasn't about saving loved one, it was so much more than that.
ok, so most of the stuff, i agree with you. but at the end when you were talking about how they were controlled and not themselves, I felt like that was the point. the Capitol was controlling them. Peeta's feelings were jumbled because they were morphed by the Capitol. Katniss felt trapped in life but had no where to go. so i really feel like they should have seemed unloyal to their characters, cuz they were. I think that's what she was trying to do. I loved it, personally.
I was so into the series that when I was reading I felt like it was real life and when I was not reading it felt like my life was just a story and my real life was in the book.
This story was definitely intense. I just finished it a while ago. I'm sitting here feeling raw and sad. Finnick's death ... true. So sad. I still loved the book, but it is definitely hard to swallow.
go check out my channel (: i'm going to be having a big video contest and giveaway and such when i reach 1,000 subscribers (: of course all hunger games related stuff (: so go check it out!
So I finished the book this morning, and I definatly agree with all the big points happening at once. I wanted to cry half of the time. Katniss looses so many people in her life from her father all the way to her sister. It wasn't fair that she lost Rue AND Prim. And in the end I kind of hated Gale because he can just go on without looking back while Peeta would fight to be himself again. The ending for him and Katniss was cute but the Hunger Games would live on in her life forever. </3
I finished the book yesterday...And..It was awesome! Also, I didn't really think that Finnick would die in the book, I though he would survive the whole thing until he was left behind and got eaten by those ugly lizard mutts. Hmhm, lot's of people died and mostly children since they used it as a human shield. Yeaup. ._.
I'd say... maybe 2.5-3/5 Because you're so right about Prim's death. It was just, random and... it did not fit. At all. It was not only unecessary, but it did not stay true to the story if you understand what I mean. There are some characters you just don't kill off, and Prim was one of them. I can't get over her death, because it was so overwhelming sad and wrong that it took away the happiness of the end. I was disappointed in Mockingjay, really disappointed. And I so wish I wasn't. : /
Hey not only girls love this book.Iv been waiting almost a year for it like you.But i just cant get over the ending,Im not sure if i loved it or i dont like it.I know you said you didnt like the fact it was gory but it made me feel even worse for katniss. But i think Gale was the one who realy changed in this book not Peeta. He was only changed for abit but it seems like Gale isnt himself.I cant explain it but i thougth gale was like the man but now hes not.But still loved the book.
@USMCBlackOps Coin deserved it. She was responsible for Prim's death. But killing off Prim was really crossing a line. She did not stay true to the story. I was disappointed in it. I hate it when author's ruin their books.... :(
@Silme037 Yea. I like the other 2 books more than this one... This one was a bit confusing, unlike the other books... =/ but you did the author kill off Finnick, Cinna and Prim... Cinna contributes to the story line of this book, but still.
Everything up to the end was awesome. well thought out action and suspense. And at time you found yourself rooting for them to the presidents mansion. then the last fifty pages came, and I was saying "what??" and in a bad way. its as thought it went from 90 mph straight to 10. I liked the suspense an action and I hate to say i was expecting a major battle royale at the end with the president like the hospital scene in hard boiled.
This was my dream scenario: Katniss makes it into the presidents building with Peeta and Gale, thee's a big fight/action scene ending with Katniss shooting an arrow into a certain bloodstinking president. Then Peeta saves her life and shows her his undying love and they end up together.
I was really let down by this book and had expected a better ending to such an awesome triology.
I totally agree with you about everyone being out of character and the book not feeling right. The deaths were not doing the characters justice and just throwing Prim in the battle in the end seemed really pointless and desperate. And I don't believe Gale would just leave Katniss like that, when she needed him the most.
Cinna, who was my favourite character, weren't given a tribute either. (Nor did Finnick) They just assumed that Cinna had died. I was hoping he'd survived somehow.
I completely agree with everything you just said! i still cant believe finnicks dead...poor annie! :( and i am glad in the end that katniss chose peeta, but it felt like gale was completely forgotten and i wish there was more closure between the two of them...this book is so depressinggg! :( but i still couldn't put it down, i loveee the whole seriess and i wish there was another book so bad!
Also I want to say that Peeta losing his love for Katniss was essential. Beforehand their relationship was based too much on his infatuation and their need to win the crowd, which was rather hollow and lopsided. It really needed Peeta losing his unconditional love, so that K/P were forced to re-evaluate and re-form their relationship based on a more mutual love.
And the Gale situation was good at showing old friends growing apart as both come into themselves.
The book progressed in a way that was really setting it up to end like either Animal Farm (if Coin had won) or 1984 (if Snow had won). With the former, there was a lot of indication (especially with the proposed Hunger Games at the end) that Coin's gov't would've been the same as Snow's. Which is why Katniss had to kill her.
And I think the fact that Katniss was basically a puppet was intentional, giving it a theme similar to Metal Gear Solid (specifically MGS2).
the ending was so confusing like y did she explain it how it happened at the end and wat about gal did he just fall off the face of the earth or something
110% agree with you on everything you said!!! I just finished reading it yesterday, and the ending just shocked me, with Finnick and Prim dying that way, oh and how Gale's character seemed so angry and violent in this book. Also after reading it, I was left with this sad feeling, because even though there's the epilogue, it doesn't seem like they'll ever be happy again. but still 4 out of 5, it was very thrilling.
Kudos to you for originality! i mean, I know that most reviews sound basically the same, but your review was different and I liked that you were very opinionated about things and didn't just make general remarks. It's great when people know exactly what they mean, and how to express it clearly!
And I absolutely have to say your Review was exactly what was on my mind. I was devastated when Finnick died, and Prim's death was unnecessary. The book was a bit disappointing for Gale fans though.
I completely agree with everything you say, especially the part when you said that Finnick should have died a more "noble death" . He just got left behind. It was depressing. Prim's death definitely didn't feel right. It was just the spur of a moment. And exactly, Suzanne Collins adapted a completely different writing style. What happened to the headstrong heroine from the first two books?
I have always thought Gale was angry and i always was on Peetas team. that said i am pissed that he was crazy half the time. i agree with you this book was very dark and dont find the ending fulfilling. i cant believe Finnik and Prim died!!!
My friend and I have decided: Mockingjay NEVER happened. It was a bad idea for a fanfic. I just finished the book today, and I agree with what you said - though it upsets me you didn't mention Cinna. D: I think Suzanne Collins tried a new writing style...and it was the worst time to do so. Don't end a book series in a style different than the other books!
R.I.P: EVERYONE EXCEPT KATNISS, PEETA, AND GALE. :l
:P I LOVE your reviews! Everything you just said was EXACTLY on my mind! Especially the part with Finnick dying. There was really no point of Prim dying either since the entire reason why Katniss fought was because she wanted to save her sister! Counter reproductive right?
And Finnick and Annie were very sweet <33 I wish i had a boyfriend like Finnick
I think when Katniss said 'yes' to the Hunger Games for the Capitol children, she already knew she was going to kill Coin. If I'm right, those Hunger Games never happen after Coin dies. I mean, when she says it, she says, "For Prim." Well, isn't Coin responsible for Prim's death, for letting her onto the battlefield? She also mentions that Haymitch thinks the same thing as her, so I guessed (after thinking the same thing as you did) she meant that he knew her plan.
The whole part about another Hunger Games with the Capitol kids was lame. I was totally expecting Katniss to say no. I think that goes against pretty much everything they were fighting for. The took down the Capitol so I don't think there is any reason to continue the Games. Just no.
Finnick's death made me cry and Peeta being hijacked was awful!! The book left me drained. I agree with most of your review. Good job :)
ur lucky u knew finnick was guna die because i didnt and my friend already told me him and annie had a kid!!i thought it would be a happy ending and when he died i just sat there for five minutes like WTF!!!?!?!?! i thought johanna was gunna die but she was in a stupid hospital bed in the end!!!!:P
i agree with what you said about the happiness and chaos and not being able to picture anything :P
and yes i also HATED the hunger games thing and the fact that katniss AGREED to it...
Haha loved your face when you said "Summer Dandelion!"
and I completely agree. It was a great story, but I didn't feel the "closure" there's just so many unanswered things and the book was definitely rushed. Finnick's death was the worse part. He was a main character, and all she did was give him a quickie death with the lizards. WHAT THE HECKK?!? Seriously, that was pathetic on the author's part.
Wow! I never thought about it that way! A story of revenge? You're ABSOLUTELY RIGHT!
I didn't really expect it to be like that either. Everyone was so out of character, but as it said in the book, everyone changed. I loved it tho. Not everything can be all happy and perfect, but in the end, it will be okay.
I LOVED the fast pace of Mockingjay. It kept me so entertwined, I stayed up until three in the morning reading. I am completely satisfied with how Collins ended the trilogy. So many what ifs, how come's and what now's left for me to think about. Many people hate it when these questions arise at the end, but this way we can walk away still thinking and wondering. I was so emotionally drained I finished bawling and shaking, but not sure what I was crying for. PERFECT ENDING TO AN AMAZING SERIES!
@izzdancer9 i probably could've written that myself, it was so similar to what i think of the book. 3AM, all the questions, and the tears. when i finished, i walked around the house emotionally drained, sat on the couch next to my brother, and just started crying again. he teased that i had 'quite the cold'. later, my mom asked if i was coming down with something. i looked quite horribly red and puffy around the eyes. wonderful.
Mockingjay was amazing but im annoyed that it seemed so rushed and left some events unexplained. Only if Suzanne would have just made it into a 4 book serious or even not limiting herself to a 400 page book, then she could have explained more of the events and situation without having to rush it just to finish the book. loved the book and the series but disappointed at how it was executed. i'm giving it a 8/10
Finnick's death was very under appreciated, but in a way I feel he was honored when *SPOILER IF YOU ALREADY DIDN'T KNOW!!!!!!* Katniss places the picture of his and Annie's son in the book she created. All in all, it was an ending. I feel satisfied but also empty. I think this will work well when/if it's a movie so we can get a clear picture. and I agree Finnick and Annie made some of the cutest moments in the book (since our dear Bread Boy was so messed up T_T). So a 3 1/2 or 4 out of 5 for me.
I was really mad about Finnick's death too! I mean he died in a sentence! A SENTENCE!? That's all my favorite character gets? A SENTENCE!??! I felt like hollow the whole book. It was very cold and cruel. But maybe that's realistic? I am very mixed too. I'm trying to decide whether i hate it or love it. I agree with everything you said!
I totally agree with everything you said. I felt like yeah, very fast. it went by like a roller coaster for me. I didnt really expect this and i was really dissapointed in this book. and all of a sudden prim dies?? I mean i was like woah..she died? and what im really dissapointed in was how there was hardly any peeta. like, i wanted more of peeta! and i feel really sad looking back at how peeta was a loving boy, but now the capitol takes away memmories. i wanted the old peeta back! :( 3/5 sorry
OMGGGG. What you're saying is exactly(!) how I feel! About everything. About the pace, the deaths, the change in character. Finnick's death was the most unneeded; and Prim's didn't seem real to me. In the end, I loved that Peeta and Katniss ended up together, seeing their past. He always loved her; he was always there. They were always star-crossed, but only bc of the Hunger Games, they found eachother. Though, Katniss writing off Gale so quickly made me upset. Best friends, huh? =( Great review
I feel your pain. I felt like she cared more about making her point about war than being true to her characters. I wouldn't say that I hated it, because it was exciting at points but I hated what she did to the characters. They all kind of just rolled over and gave up. Good review, though. It makes me feel better knowing someone else felt the same way.
I'm so sorry!! I accidentally clicked the "thumbs down" button!! BUT I LOVED THIS RANT! And I agree, Finnick was my favorite character, and the puppets thing you said was a genius, because I definitely agree!
Well it was hard for me reading this book because it took a terrible turn of events that was just depressing and awful, but then as it wrapped up, I realized I really loved it all.

JustMeHanna1113 1 year ago
I loved it. but being 10 years old I didn't fully understand it. but Suzanne Collins is an awesome writer.she made it descriptive enough so I could imagine it.

FANtasticvids1 1 year ago
WTF!
FANtasticvids1 1 year ago
i feel happiness and anger because i always imagined it that the war would end and all the people wold like get what they were looking for, and like in the end they all get together for a dinner or smth like that. i mean in the end they just threw gale out of the story what the heck, and petta i mean of all the things in the world they brainwash him??? well it is good that they still end up together and i agree the book was fast i mean to the hospital, to war, killing Finnick witch was no good.

Suzanne Collins really is smart. People still remember all the little details and still get frustrated months after the series ended!
everNrose 1 year ago
I felt like you when I first read the book. I had felt betrayed by Suzanne Collins. But now that 3 months have passed, I'm starting to appreciate her genius. No war is clean cut, everyone is brainwashed to an extent. This book really portrays all the mixed up emotion, and how messed up things can get. The only reason all of this started was because of Prim, and now she's dead. Now we clearly see that the point in the story wasn't about saving loved one, it was so much more than that.
everNrose 1 year ago
ok, so most of the stuff, i agree with you. but at the end when you were talking about how they were controlled and not themselves, I felt like that was the point. the Capitol was controlling them. Peeta's feelings were jumbled because they were morphed by the Capitol. Katniss felt trapped in life but had no where to go. so i really feel like they should have seemed unloyal to their characters, cuz they were. I think that's what she was trying to do. I loved it, personally.

Mainly, the book is about the war so yeah totally different.

Yeaup. ._.
Zarkly30 1 year ago
I'd say... maybe 2.5-3/5 Because you're so right about Prim's death. : /

I was confused... WTF did she kill Pres. Coin!!! WTF! WTF Cinna! WTF Finnick PRIM!!!!!
USMCBlackOps 1 year ago
@USMCBlackOps Coin deserved it. She was responsible for Prim's death. But killing off Prim was really crossing a line. She did not stay true to the story. I was disappointed in it. I hate it when author's ruin their books.... :(
Silme037 1 year ago
@Silme037 Yea. I like the other 2 books more than this one... This one was a bit confusing, unlike the other books... =/ but you did the author kill off Finnick, Cinna and Prim... Cinna contributes to the story line of this book, but still.
USMCBlackOps 1 year ago
Everything up to the end was awesome. well thought out action and suspense. And at time you found yourself rooting for them to the presidents mansion. then the last fifty pages came, and I was saying "what??" and in a bad way. its as thought it went from 90 mph straight to 10. I liked the suspense an action and I hate to say i was expecting a major battle royale at the end with the president like the hospital scene in hard boiled.
Side note. romance isn't the main focus.
im middle ground.

Part 2:
This was my dream scenario: Katniss makes it into the presidents building with Peeta and Gale, thee's a big fight/action scene ending with Katniss shooting an arrow into a certain bloodstinking president. Then Peeta saves her life and shows her his undying love and they end up together.
I was really let down by this book and had expected a better ending to such an awesome triology.
appl3tart 1 year ago
Part 1:
I totally agree with you about everyone being out of character and the book not feeling right. The deaths were not doing the characters justice and just throwing Prim in the battle in the end seemed really pointless and desperate. And I don't believe Gale would just leave Katniss like that, when she needed him the most.
Cinna, who was my favourite character, weren't given a tribute either. (Nor did Finnick) They just assumed that Cinna had died. I was hoping he'd survived somehow.

finnick dead.
that is the only thing i lament about Mockingjay !
that and the Eclipse-like convo Peeta & Gale have while Katniss is asleep..
but other then that, BEST FINALE BOOK EVER.

MuSiCLuV4334 1 year ago
Also I want to say that Peeta losing his love for Katniss was essential. Beforehand their relationship was based too much on his infatuation and their need to win the crowd, which was rather hollow and lopsided. It really needed Peeta losing his unconditional love, so that K/P were forced to re-evaluate and re-form their relationship based on a more mutual love.
And the Gale situation was good at showing old friends growing apart as both come into themselves.
Kitchensink108 1 year ago
The book progressed in a way that was really setting it up to end like either Animal Farm (if Coin had won) or 1984 (if Snow had won). With the former, there was a lot of indication (especially with the proposed Hunger Games at the end) that Coin's gov't would've been the same as Snow's. Which is why Katniss had to kill her.
And I think the fact that Katniss was basically a puppet was intentional, giving it a theme similar to Metal Gear Solid (specifically MGS2).

GODnGEASS 1 year ago
I agree. I love Finnick. He is my absolute most favorite character. I pretty much feel the same way about everything you said.
I'm also happy she picked Peeta.
I still love the book however because I love the characters and plot, but I don't feel it was as good as the other two.

GIRL, you just READ my MIND!
Amazing review.

Good job :)

AnyaxAlstreim 1 year ago
I didn't really expect it to be like that either. Everyone was so out of character, but as it said in the book, everyone changed. I loved it tho. Not everything can be all happy and perfect, but in the end, it will be okay.
SummerSparkle321 1 year ago
I LOVED the fast pace of Mockingjay. It kept me so entertwined, I stayed up until three in the morning reading. I am completely satisfied with how Collins ended the trilogy. So many what ifs, how come's and what now's left for me to think about. Many people hate it when these questions arise at the end, but this way we can walk away still thinking and wondering. I was so emotionally drained I finished bawling and shaking, but not sure what I was crying for. PERFECT ENDING TO AN AMAZING SERIES!
izzdancer9 1 year ago
@izzdancer9 i probably could've written that myself, it was so similar to what i think of the book. 3AM, all the questions, and the tears. when i finished, i walked around the house emotionally drained, sat on the couch next to my brother, and just started crying again. he teased that i had 'quite the cold'. later, my mom asked if i was coming down with something. i looked quite horribly red and puffy around the eyes. wonderful.
TributedAngel88 1 year ago
Mockingjay was amazing but im annoyed that it seemed so rushed and left some events unexplained. Only if Suzanne would have just made it into a 4 book serious or even not limiting herself to a 400 page book, then she could have explained more of the events and situation without having to rush it just to finish the book. loved the book and the series but disappointed at how it was executed. i'm giving it a 8/10
xbloodystarx 1 year ago
