I realized they edited out Claymore's scene where he goes on about the life and death of the Captain--and his own life, to which Martha responds "That's the saddest story I've heard since Khruschev missed Disneyland".
It's speculation, but likely the reason NBC ran this show its first year was what happened with BATMAN. After ABC canceled that series in early 1968, Fox negotiated with NBC to air it. However, by the time the deal was made, the main standing set (the Batcave) had been dismantled, and it wasn't economically feasible to rebuild it. But there was an order for a season of a half-hour program...therefore, this--whether it was on the shelf or whipped up in response.
@debilt8 It can't equal the 15-year on-again off-again affair Lange had with author John Cheever...he liked people other than the dad of George Costanza's fiancee.
@BigBellyMen The houses are different. The house used in the series is an actual house and still exists, but the one in the 1947 film was constructed by 20th Century Fox on location in Palos Verdes. It no longer exists because it was dismantled after production ended.
I have wonderful memories watching the morning reruns of this show with the whole family (1977), and I even used to audio record favorite episodes, so I have much of the classic dialogue memorized. It is great to get to actually SEE the pilot again after so long!
I faithfully watched this show in my late teens. It's still charming. The basic hindrance to romance between the Captain and Mrs. Muir here had to disappoint romantics somewhat. I, at least, really wanted the two to unite, but he was a spirit, she human. In the 1947 movie, Mrs. Muir lives a long life and dies. Her spirit then goes off with the Captain, into the mist, arm in arm. Charles Nelson Reilly, nerdish here, was a comic, romantic lead in Broadway's "Hello Dolly" as Cornelius Hackl (1964).
@prchristman If you want to think the television version had the same ending (in the non-Viacom TV land) as the movie...where does that leave Mr. Muir in either?
I was born in 1965 and I was a fan of this show in kindergarden...i remember parts very clearly...(too bad it has canned laughter track!) hope lang is enchanting (movie had gene tierney) / @ milwaukee
@Countrygent100 wonderful cast and she was a very strong female character. The Capn was a remarkable man strong and you wouldnt find him beating up women or children. firm but flexible
WHEN will it be possible to buy this wonderful show in DVD????. I used to watch it as a child and it was awesome.... so many memories related to this tender and lovely story. In france also we were fans!!
I have been asking myself the same question for years. Someone is selling the chopped FX versions on Ebay, claiming they own the rights and is making a fortune. The people that own this show should get busy! In the meantime, i will settle for the home made article (more uncut DVDs I got after joining a few GAMM groups on yahoo)
I watched this growing up, has anyone noticed that in the 60's,70's, Bewtiched, I Dream of Jeannie, Munsters, Addams family, My Favorite Martian, The Ghost and Mrs. Muir all played the super natural as fun, and lighted hearted, and today it's shown as violence, gore, devils, etc. that shows something about the media today, and what "they" want to show the world as.
If they put spooky music to the background instead of a laugh track when the little boy was talking it would've given this a scary feel to it.

The TV series was based in Maine. Cool.

Good point! I never thought of him! (I've had similar thoughts regarding the great beyond, or Heaven. I won't get started.)

My word I had forgot Charles Nelson Reilly! This was
a good show in those peculiar days of "Bewitched" and
"I dream of Jeannie". Reta Shaw was also one of my
old favorite actresses. Ahh well... any kind of DECENT
TV has become a GHOST.

@GooglFascists : Charles Nelson Reilly was the MAN(sort of). ;])

@CinemaRedfern : It's a house in Santa Barbara, now up for sale for 3.75 million. ;])

@buzzclick500 Yes, but is it the same house that featured in the original B&W film?
CinemaRedfern 5 months ago
@CinemaRedfern : Hmm. Good question...I believe it's the one used in the t.v. series, but it's easy enough to find online.

It's all part of the global plan, to corrupt and deceive the populace.
Look at the cop shows of past. The FBI, dragnet, starsky n hutch, Hawaii 5 O,
Now look at CSI etc, dark, morbid, dead bodies every where.
No more car chase's.
