Farewell, great voice. Great voice of reason, of humanity, of humour. Great voice against cant, against hypocrisy, against obscurantism and pretension, against all tyrants including God. Farewell, great warrior. You were in a foxhole, Hitch, and you did not flinch. Farewell, great example to us all. - Richard Dawkins on Hitch
The glutinous praise is sickening to watch. ''The greatest debator since Demonsthenes.'' Did Fry really say that? I've watched most of his debates, and he sounds the same in each one. He rambles on, mostly in a non sequitur fashion, occasionally delivering an ad hominem, before closing his argument. Lane Craig handed his arse to him on a silver plate. It's weird to see all these leftist liberals congratulating each other on how fantastic they all are. Soggy biscuit time I think.
@Bastiat90 Show some respect. This man's mind and debates have influenced many in their own opinion. Just because his debating was not to your taste or opinion does not give you the right to insult him.
More importantly, to ignore his celebrity, a man has died. Forget the argument surrounding this event and realise that fact. The phrase rest in peace, even with no religious connotation, exists for a reason.
Hitchens was castigated by Sean Hannity for failing to show sufficient respect to that near spherical cleric Jerry Falwell. Forgive me for adopting Hitchens's policy towards certain dead people. Hitchens certainly supported causes that killed for more than anything Falwell associated with. Leninism, Trotskyism (Krondstadt), Iraq, Afghanistan etc.
@Bastiat90 As a general rule, just because one other person may lack a certain virtue does not justify you to give it up voluntarily. My complaint was that in an event to celebrate someone's life you attack him. I have no problem with you disagreeing with his political or philosophical views, but please respect that events like these, that mean so much to people, should not be insulted and tainted.
Hitchens had no such qualms; if that reveals a character defect in me it will in him too. Personally, I don't care. Hitchens made a career out of bullying people because he thought himself intellectually superior to everyone.
I agree with some of his views but I still believe him to be an objectionable person: a prodigious name dropper and social climber and intellectually dishonest journalist. Calling fascists those who opposed Iraq was something Orwell would have criticised.
@Bastiat90 Even though I would argue with you about his influence and his methods, all I am saying is that this is not the place for a debate. Even objectionable people deserve a certain degree of respect at events that are for those who cared about them to remember them. If you wish to argue about the merits of his character and work, then I'm sure there are forums that would be happy for your input.
@Bastiat90 Thank you :) and sorry to be a dick. Looking forward to your arguments, they seem well thought out and reasoned. See you on the battlefield!
Couldn't give a hoolie about celebrity bereavements, but the beautiful Hitchens passing made me cry. So full of life, so aware of our mortality, made the whole thing very real. Such a strong man. I miss him already. Is that weird?

Can you think of anything worse? An evening in the company of pompous intellectual wannabees whose egos are huge and arguments childish. These men fool a lot of stupid people into thinking they have original thoughts with intellectual merit when in fact they are just spewing out drivel that self-loving idiots who cannot bear the thought of a greater being than themselves existing have been throwing up for years. Demon possessed sodomites to a man! Hitch my arse!
AIDS occupies such a large part in our awareness because of what it has been taken to represent. It seems the very model of all the catastrophes privileged populations feel await them.
when people ask me which 5 people would you invite to dinner. I need not to think far, for most of them are in these videos. I wish Hitch the best of luck and I'll be thinking of him. A true Shepard of the enlightenment.

I love Stephen Fry's voice! Partly why I can't stop watching Jeeves & Wooster is because I love listening to him.

I wasn't entirely sure when this was filmed, and for a long while I listened to this as a beautiful funerary service.

James Fenton's poem is incredible. More powerful, relevant, and heart-felt than any religious document could ever hope to be.

I was in the audience. Not enough time given to Dawkins. And I do despise Fry, slobbering pervert drooling over pictures of Hitch as a young man.

Watching this tonight because I'm just really, really sad. Never met Hitchens, but I feel genuinely bereaved. What a loss to the world.

Sadened by the news of his death today. Stephen Frys words some him up perfectly:
"You were envied, feared, adorded, reviled and loved. Never ignored. Never bested. A great and Marvellous man"
The world really has lost one of the best! RIP Hitch
