Maybe downloading shit is unethical. But you dont punish unethical things with unethical sentences!!!! i think its rediculous they did that to a person who downloaded 24 songs AS WELL!!!!! hell theres people who downloaded thousands for years....WTF??!!
So let me get this straight, she got to pay 2 million $ for downloading 1 song. Ahahah omg, this cant heppen even here in russia... Fuck American Goverment, im gonna cancel my summer vacation in San Francisco, or i might be arrested as "potential terrorist" that came from Russia (i also serve in Russia military). CBS owns CNET. CNET runs DOWNLOAD (dot) com. DL (dot) com distributes Kazaa and other known file sharing "devices".
The U.S. Supreme Court has ruled that anyone distributing a known copyright infringing device (software included but not limited to) is LIABLE for damages derived from copyright material!! THIS ALSO INDICTES CBS FOR KNOWINGLY DISTRIBUTING THE SOFTWARE TO DO IT!!!
Even the show's own host doesn't have the brain power to put 2 and 2 together here :S ARGHHHHH!
WTF? They shouldnt have freaking charged her 1.9 mil for some songs that she owned but not the drug dealers or the murders. Sure there are legal issues for songs but WTF! Thuis is stupid. I think that the government or whatever is trying to get some money from her that she cant pay. Tell them to screw off. This is stupid
ITS A FUCKING JOKE ! and how do you come up with these amounts are you fucking kidding me!!! it dont even cost that much to make the CDs !!!! She bought the CDs she owns them !! If you bought something anyways arent you allowed to share what you own ! but anyways this is just retarded especially the amount !!!
@cfetzner technically she doesn't "own" the music. She owns the right to play the music on the plastic device she bought (the cd). The owner of the music is either the artist OR the music label. That's the law.
None the less the real joke here is that CBS, via Download (dot) com distribute Kazaa!! CBS should be paying damages cos Jammie didn't create or distribute the software. CBS DID! How f***ed up is that?!
The real question is WHY ARE Co's like CBS DISTRIBUTING THIS SOFTWARE IF THEY KNOW?!
Darwin form the misadventures of gumball quote time!!! " YOU WOULDN"T STEAL A CAR! YOU WOULDN"T STEAL A WOMANS PURSE!!! PIRACY IS STEALING!!!!!!!!!!!!
@Dantaru78 Yeah, but it's not stealing something that's worth 2 million dollars. That's just absolutely retarded that they would charge that to anyone for sharing a couple cds.
If she bought the music CD and wants to share it online, why is that illegal? Buying a music CD is not illegal downloading. The record industry needs to know that.
UNFAIR While suing these people you name on the video the RIAA and FBI ignored the following conversation A NC police officer named the name Kazaa discussing how the songs are arranged in groups and you just click and get them He said its the thing to do everybody is doing it He bet his daughters had downloaded a thousand songs on his computer He had to buy a new computer his old one FILLED UP WITH MEMORY He laughed and said he hoped the federal government did not come and investigate him
lol, rich corporations have no grasp on reality if they think something like this would help them fight piracy. if anything, this will get their site hacked by Anonymous, increase piracy rates and reduce their overall sales because of pissed off citizens.
seriously, if you dont have 2 mil lying around, the most they can do is call you each day and ask if you have it yet. its not a crime to be poor.
@Thedrizzle404 How about you pay for the music like you are supposed to do... dumbshit. You wont be sued if you follow the fucking law. Big fucking deal if it costs 99cents, I can barely afford it, but I still manage. No one wants to follow the laws, but everyone wants freedom and security. you're also supporting the bands and the economy.
It's not the govts fault America is broke, it is the people's fault
youre right, someone sharing a 99 cent song deserves to be sued by a multi billion dollar company for 2 million dollars. she broke the law, and thats the just punishment, right?
ignorance... know what a company should get as compensation for someone stealing a 99 cent song? 99 cents. theyre greedy douche bags and i wont support them, so no, i wont buy their shit. if an artist sells directly, ill buy it.
@Thedrizzle404 You are obviously are very ignorant when it comes to laws and criminal justice. If you were to fine people 99cents for stealing a 99cent song, everyone would steal it.... even if the fine was like 100$, people would look at the probability of getting caught, and still download illegally. It's all about making an example of thieves. Greedy douche bags?? because you can't have everything for free??? lol?
making an example of someone for doing something to try to scare people into obeying you. wonder what other groups use those tactics. the main point is their is no property damages, theyre all theoretical. "well we just lost a million billion dollars to piracy." they have no real proof they lose anything whatsoever. theyre greedy douche bags because they make more money in a day than people download all year's worth, and yet they spend MORE to fight than they gain. hypocrisy.
@Thedrizzle404 It's all logic. If people download songs, the economy loses money. They earned their money fair and square; but greedy kids like you want to steal their hard earned work. Music is a luxury, not a necessity. You're lucky to even be able to listen to music... and you illegally download and destroy the market.... what a disgrace.
@BeepimajeepBeep Too bad your logic is flawed. When you download a song/game/exc. illegally you are not taking it from the owner, eliminating his option to distribute it further, you are taking a copy most likely distributed by other users. Thus the owner of his product will still sell his product to people that will buy, and people that wouldn't buy it still won't. So ill just end it with a fuck off.
@BeepimajeepBeep U mad crow? Come at me with some solid arguments, and not just spread your ignorance further. Explain me the relevant part of economics i don't understand.
Eat ass, motherfucking record companies. Downloading will never end. You're all a bunch of cunts, for going after this poor women. This is why people hate Jews.

Don't worry. When this case reach the Supreme Court, I will almost guarantee the guilty verdict will be reversed and will rule that Jammie Thomas did not violated copyright for what she downloaded. To the record industry people reading this. Not only will I CONTINUE to download music, this story makes me really want to download music just to say FUCK YOU!
$50,000 would be justified and you are liable for what your kids do. However $1.9 Million is unbelievable. I could see $1*24*2,000(for the number of people she shared this with) = $48,000, but that amount is unreal. From what I have found though, the record company is not expecting her to pay all of that.
She was caught due to her sharing of them. They cannot trace downloads. Nevertheless, she chose files that were being watched and soon they collected her obvious exposed IP. The hilarious segment: she used Kazaa. LOLOLOLOLOL
@SlimeTron5000 Hello SlimeTron5000. Good morning. Yeah, I was wondering about that myself. Was she really caught due to her sharing of them? @yisacknayrabin They got money off the merchandise and concerts. Limewire is a method of promoting the music. Before the artists had to try to so hard to get through to the labels. Now, they have the Internet.
@yisacknayrabin They got money off the merchandise and concerts. Limewire is a method of promoting the music. Before the artists had to try to so hard to get through to the labels. Now, they have the Internet.
are you kidding me if i was a musicain i would upload my own fucking song on torrent sites to get my name out there because if your good people will still buy your cd and want to see you live and musicians only get 5% of the cd profits the real money is playing live so shut your pie hole
For what it's worth the court did lower it substantially from $80,000 per song to $2,250 per song. Still she could have settled the thing for a few thousand, and I doubt she can really afford $54,000 even if it is a fuck ton less than 1.92 million.
so, someone basically hacked her computer dowloading the 24 illegal songs on kazaa, deleted the program right afterwards, and they blamed her for no reason although she didnt anything the whole time, it was someone else who did it and they have to pay the money?
Here's THE ONLY way to get rid of the corrupt, by suits and ties ruled, corporate music industry!
Pay attention.
STOP buying cd's, STOP buying every kind of merchandise you can possibly think of, STOP going to the concerts. This way the bald headed, dick cheney looking suit and ties who dont care about music but only business lose their interest in bands simply cause they wont make money off them. Force the bands to go independent, they should do it for themselfs and the music, NOT the money.
Sorry to hear you miss the bigger picture. Corrupt suit and tie people invaded the music industry like they do with every industry if they can make big amounts of money from it. They have destroyed many small companies who were real and in it for the MUSIC, making money was secundary. They are the Wallmart of the music industry. Bands should get their heads out of their asses and release themselfs from dodgy contracts and go independent. If your brain cant handle this then i am sorry for you.

@dmana3172 I hope so, but I'm kinda expecting Joel Tenenbaum triumph because he has Charles Nesson...and if Jammie Thomas survives the third trial

are you kidding me if i was a musicain i would upload my own fucking song on torrent sites to get my name out there because if your good people will still buy your cd and want to see you live and musicians only get 5% of the cd profits the real money is playing live so shut your pie hole

RIAA steals money from them too...

You're a dumbass
Musicians should perform for "free"?
Should doctors treat people for free?
Should you have to keep flipping those burgers for free?
I think the attorney's point was the amount of damages --- sue her for $25 per song
