I read an interview Maynard did with a philosophy professor (Christopher diCarlo) back in 2001. What I found was that when he is asked intelligent questions, he gives intelligent answers. I learned a lot about Maynard from that interview. I don't think he's trying to make this guy look stupid, the interviewer did that to himself.
whats wrong with you people, this was a great inteview and the questions prompted Maynard and Danny to say some really awesome stuff about their music. the guy was just star struck :P
I could see where people would think of Maynard as condescending, but after a full one minute of this interview, I feel like I might be inclined to take a similar approach. The guy is just not conducting himself well at all. After the first 500 times that random people hit you with the same inanity, the 501st is naturally going to get a bit of snarkiness, especially when your intended levity is met with nothing more than a blank face.
The interviewer has some good questions, but it seems like he's expecting a certain style of response, and when a joke, or anything other than he expects comes out, he doesn't know how to react to it. He's an unfortunately poor interviewer due to his inability to reply to an answer with flexibility. In other words, he's not actually allowing the conversation to flow, but rather focusing on his next question.
Maynard's like a humorless vacuum. If people were having fun in a room Maynard would suck out that fun's core, causing it to become so dense that it would collapse upon itself, creating a black hole that would suck up all of the joy out of the entire universe.
Maynard is an introvert, and also doesn't tolerate dumb-ass shit. but I think he understands the guy is very nervous with mediocre english which makes him come off as annoying, being one of the few to interview them you know. danny is more of a people person to put it mildly. that doesn't make him a better person, we all have our quirks of personality.
Also, I suppose I would rather MJK be a narcissist than desperate for attention, especially when contentment with oneself without slipping into insecurity or vanity is difficult to obtain.
I don't know necessarily that mjk participates in interviews simply to deride or demean said interviewer, I would hope that whether or not he chooses to degrade an interviewer would be dependent on the interviewers' attitude and the quality of their questions. It may be that Maynard despises doing interviews, but it's kind and considerate of him to indulge us, his fans, however infrequently and in so doing endure something he apparently isn't too fond of. .
I also am almost positive when Maynard said "well hows your band doin" he was an impulse or two away from grabbing this guy and choking him out. Dannys face was just kinda dissapointed that guy even said that and then when Maynard replied Danny laughed a relief like "fuck this guy"

I've seen plenty of interviews with Maynard where he is polite and accomodating with the interviewer. The difference was the person interviewing was intelligent and knowledgable. This douchenozzle was completely rediculous. It doesn't surprise me that he was affiliated with MTV. Not only did we not gain any insight into Tool with this interview, I for feel a little stupider after watching it.

@Muff0o0 I thought quite the opposite. He seemed to be glad that this guy needled issues deeper and deeper, rather than asking a pseudo deep question and moving on before it had been fully explored. He has said in prior interviews that he is a reactionary and that he works well under conditions. So I'd hassa guess he hates when people don't define their questions enough. Or let his cold exterior stop them from asking the questions that they believe are meaningful.
