it's verbum sapient (wise words, or a word to the wise, depending on context). but really doesn't matter. music matters, not translation. music doesn't care what language it's in.
@dragonfreak555555 Yes they are real words. They are latin. Yes we all know the definition of, "phonetic." And yes, your phonics is incorrect. The first part of the song's lyrics are sung, "CUR-su-UM PER-fi-ci-O;" hence the name of the song, "Cursum Perficio."
before St Patrick..who was a spanish priest arrived in ireland..they had their own tongue.
fortunately there is still gaelic alive. celtic another matter. this could be a mixture...however it does not escape the intention in presentation of something quite unique.
To all those latin critic wannabes that can neither appreciate Eithne's singing of this song nor the effort dragonfreak put into the this video... SHOVE IT WHERE THE SUN DON'T SHINE, SIDEWAYS! Where do you get off on criticizing the singer who, if it hadn't been for her, you'd never had heard the song, or criticizing the person who put an honest effort into making this video. Here's a shocker for you: You are not the center of this or any universe. Truth hurts, right? Now go cry about it.
Speaking of Latin and how not to speak/write it: I get really tired, really fast of how poorly English-speaking people (Americans, Brits) pronounce Latin words and phrases commonly heard in the English language. They don't even seem to try, really. It's truly music to my ears when the rare person actually puts some effort and learning into it. Enya, in this song (which I absolutely love), unfortunately, is not that rare person. But I love her music and always will.
These lyrics are a mockery!! I got the CD, nothing to do with the real lyrics. Unfortunely I don't know how to make videos otherwise I would make my own video with the right lyrics.
Latin: Cursum perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, Phoebus Eternum I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, Phoebus For Eternity...
Here are the Latin lyrics: Cursum perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, Phoebus Iternum Translation: I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, Phoebus Like LilGirlBlue said, Phoebus is the Latin name for the Sun God.
Here are the lyrics in actual Latin: Cursum perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, Phoebus Iternum The translation: I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, Phoebus. As Lilgirlblue said (so people won't ask hopefully), Phoebus is the Latin name for the Sun God.
wow......note to self, don't try latin....because if i get it wrong...a bunch of smug ass "know it all's" like yourselves will call me an idiot for ruining your pathetic lives....who cares?! it's a good song!!!
Cursum Perfico I end my journey Verbum Sapienti A word to the wise quo plus habent the more (people) have eo plus cupiunt the more they want Post nubila, Phobus After the coulds comes the sun Iternum
Latin: Cursum perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, Phoebus Iternum Translated: I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, Phoebus. ("Iternum" - In all probability, it is either a misspelling of "eternum" (eternal), a misspelling of "iterum" (again and again), or a poetic form meaning "journey".)
The literal Latin properly spelled is more useful than English phonetics here, I think.
In my view, Enya's scariest song. All her dark, ominous themes are in Latin. A close runner up is Pax Deorum. Must have something to do with her Irish Catholic upbringing.
..just a note about the last line in Latin, i believe it is: 'Quod post nubila, Phoebus'....not 'Post nubila, Phoebus'....(rough translation: 'and after the dark clouds, sun')
the text is: Cursum perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, phoebus Æternum which means: I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, the sun Eternal
The text should be Cursum Perficio. Verbum sapienti: quo plus habent, eo plus cupiunt. Post nubila, Phoebus Iternum. Which in turn translates as: I finish the course. A word to the wise: the more [people] have, the more they want. After the clouds, Phoebus --Phoebus being the roman god of sunlight, prophecy, music and poetry. Nice eh. I really like this piece by Enya. Beautiful.
LOL! i CAN'T STOP LAUGHING!! The comments are so funny, but true, latin words in this song are badly pronounced but the song is so beautiful and Enya does an incredible performance. Give Enya and DRAGONFREAK some credit please!
i love this song and because you do, you are a good person, i loved it, it is the way you saw it and THATS HOW YOU EXPRESSED IT, DONT CHANGE THE WAY YOU HEARD IT you listened to it, thats what music is for...good job!
I really appreciate the effort, but I must say same as the WUNJIO and alchemistra.
Phonetic english cannot be associated with this song ! Latin was always something like sacred .. and this song means from me something totally high, beyond me, something at the highest positions. If I don't see the ancient and original written latin there... I can't watch it anymore, it spoils my enjoyment.

@TheMercilessEye Mister. From the time, I've written this have passed like 2 years.Believe it or not,but I started to ACTUALLY learn latin year ago.To be honest, i'm pretty crazy to latin and without much of ego,I'd say that I'm on the half-

I know very well which kinds of languages, that could be marked as "Latin",were present in human history and I can tell you with absolutely clear conscience, that this one (only in subtitles, singing is absolutely perfect) is not latin.
You're likely right...and my guess (based on most of her work) is that this is likelier to be some sort of british isles tongue - though which one is anybody's guess, since I'm not up on distinguishing Celtic from Gaelic or whatever.
@RJHOLMES2009 yes, I know that. So what's the matter about what I said? My comment is not about Enya's problem, it's about misspelling... I listen to Enya till I was a child, I'm not ignorant... And actually it's not a band, but a person. Enya is her professional name. As I see, you said two different things in your replies: first she's a band, then she's a person with a name.
@WUNJIO I never said you are ignorant I was just informing you, because at first you were saying Enya is Anglo-Saxon when she is actually Irish. haha I must have forgot to remove my first comment.
@WUNJIO Okay, a quick linguistics course here: Celtic is the root language of Brythonic & Goidelic (gaelic). Gaelic has 3 branches; Manx, Highland Scots, & Irish.
Irish gaelic has 3 dialects; Munster, Connaught, & Donegal (Eithne's native tongue). The Highland & Donegal dialect were the same until roughly 600yrs. ago. I know of this because my Highland ancestors originally came from north Ireland (Eithne's home turf) between 400 & 500AD.
@WUNJIO Eithna wrote the music, Roma Ryan wrote the lyrics, as she's done with all the songs in which Eithna sings, except of course, "The Frog Prince" & "Dreams".
it sounds like: cursum wounds, heartbeat seas :)

Oh, I forgot it! "Blee-oo-bloo-oh-skip-bi-et" it's "eo plus cupiunt"..
Funny: you wrote in three different ways "eo plus cupiunt"..
"Poh-poh-ski-bi-nah-biiiiiii-bous" = "Post nubila, Phoebus" ("Po-ost nu-bi-la, Phoe-e-ebus").
"oou-feu-nos-saba-bei-et" = "Quo plus habent"; and then she says "qu-o plus ha-bent, eo -plus -cu-pi-unt". You wrote it in another different way!
The only nearly correct word is Eterna: Iternum. The meaning's the same.
But what you did is complex, so I appreciate it.
WUNJIO 3 years ago
excuse-me.. "Cur-su-mu Per-ee-ci-mu" should be "cur-sum cur-sum per-fi-ci-o"?...
Yes, it's latin, of course, and also bad spoken (I can clearly hear that the singer is anglosaxon, because the vowels are awful).
I'm sure that Enya is wonderful; she's brilliant, she's one of the best... and this is not the only song in latin she wrote.
But... you can't absolutely say "Cur-bu-sa-bi-et-t" meaning "verbum sapienti": I think you understand that it's a bit different...
But, in general, nice idea..
