mostly saltwater, I just got the yak last fall and have only been out in the bay. My brother just bought one so we are going after yellowtail this summer. I hope the short yak is stable enough for the open water.I'll find out soon.
it will be stable enough. it has a double chine bottom....also, it is just as wide as the longer versions. what may make it less "big water" worthy is it's length. longer kayaks just track so much better.
i have the malibu mini x as well and i use it in the great lakes. granted, it is not the ocean, but the great lakes definitely mimic any ocean bay.
