I therefore hold the refs for Game 5 as responsible for the outcome of the game as Isiah Thomas was, if not more.

The 80's were the glory years of the NBA its plain and simple. Your over analyzing everything. People fight sometimes in sports. Get over it. The competitive level that the nba brought in that era has never been matched. So some punches were thrown its niether good or bad but it happened and its a product of intensity, angry and hatred for opponents. something nowdays needs, real rivalries built on pure hatred for one another.
