  • I dont agree with the running and swimming parts of tests I think it dates back to when the army guys were trained and they began to teach they incorporated their army exercises into the curriculum.

  • I hold a Shodan rank in Isshi ryu karate and i never had to do any of that milling but if i had to somebody would have gotten knocked the fuck out, parden the profanity.

  • Belated congrats to Ms Eglen. I never graded for days for any of my dan gradings, mainly because fitness was never a major factor of training, only a personal one. But what this video doesn't show, is the years of endless training that she did to prepare for this event. Too often on Youtube, people like to criticise what they see, without understanding what is was they didn't see!

    Once again, congrats.

  • This is overkill.

  • Wow, my feelings are Hurt...jerk, huhn...to the person who wanted to discuss this, here we go...the gracie's ran a similar thing back in thier old country. where fighters came and wrestled Gracies did study some judo from a japanese man who taught in san pablo. the UFC was started by the gracies (hince the round ring) it benefits thier type of Fighting...again, go to the source...Ive been in the Martial arts longer than most of this kids have been alive this is old news.

  • this is BAD ass

  • Holy fuuuck... if I want to pass that, i MUST stop smoking... :)

  • WWow that was ju jitsu? I actually thought it was parachute regiment training, with the log run and the melee at the end. Good job on anyone that passes it!

  • Wow !!! This video was well done right down 2 the music !!! Coldplay is awesome !!! This Woman is Tough As Nails !!!! That is one hell of a Black Belt Exam !!!! Good diversity of technique from Striking, Kensetsu Waza, Kata & Weaponry !!!! Thank U 4 posting this inspiring Black Belt Exam !!! Congrats 2 the Candidate on Her Promotion, Osu !!

  • Is she the only girl/woman?

  • I have to say well done to shelia, That must of been very difficult. I do not agree with some of the aspects of the grading (how many fitness test do you need and how is swimming in a river anything to do with ju jitsu) must be because Kevin Pell has a military back round, with that being said, it must of be very hard and a big well done to shelia

  • Really awesome physical fitness test, but the punch to the trachea was pulled (not full force), so not quite as impressive as it looked- I asked my sensei about it 1 time and he did it to me, not as big of a deal as it looks.

  • @jerrwolf yeah and your superman and own a rolls royce that would hurt like hell

  • @jerrwolf yeah and your superman and own a rolls royce that would hurt like hell!!!!

  • Fantastic grading Sheila. you must be really proud. For all the haters out there, who have noticed a few slips in technique. If you were to write the letter " a" a thousand times on a piece of paper, they would not all look the same. Some would be perfect and some would not. Enough said.

  • Ousa! Great Job! Well done. I would like to give big ups to Sheila! Also to the training...awesome cirriculum..Outstanding!

  • This looks really hard i thought green belt was hard but this makes green belt look like easy well done Sensei Sheila

  • Congratulations that was quite an ordeal...

  • A big well done. i don't know the candidate, but i know kevin pell. the man is a gent and very good at what he does. huge amount of respect to them both

  • Great work... tough grading.

  • WELL DONE SHEILA UR GREAT

  • I was there on this grading and it was awsome!

  • The only people who say she wasn't good r jealous I bet u couldn't run 12 miles swim a river and 2 days on the mat so get a life u idiots

  • Every M.A. program has its goals. This program has a goal of physical fitness and bonding through physical and mental endurance. I am impressed. But the program I'm involved with does not require this level of fitness. Still, we work hard, and I'm proud of what we accomplish. Not every program is going to look alike. This kind of program will not appeal to every taker. We live in a great country with many choices.

  • That is gay. Real men use Systema.

  • tried that and found going for a dump more satisfying!

  • There is Martial Arts and there is Martial Arts ~ but this is a Cult..!!

  • good work

  • Good girl, good job.

  • Per mare per terram Hanshi!,

Totally agree with the process, we use the log and push the phys as well, if you want to be a real dan grade and be good enough to go anywhere in the world and be well thought of, then you better be prepared to put in the graft, just as this vid shows. Far to much softy softy jujitsu around, bit bottom field sorts them right out! Well done Shiela, you can wear your belt with pride!

    Ray

  • It's clearly a very enduring examination - but what's it got to do with martial arts? Technique is surely more important than all this machismo. There was none of this in the early days of the Hut, which from what I've heard is a true barometer of a martial arts dojo.

  • yer because when your in a fight knowing 200 technique's is far more important than actually being able to take a few punches and being able to keep fighting for a long period. get a grip of reality martial arts is all about being able to defend yourself.

  • Cum on!!! Her breakfalling is terrible, she shouldnt be a blue belt....

  • i feel the need to ask you how your break falls are after the first 100. it may not look pretty but it does the job and she still gets up. if u were to see them when she's fresh you'd feel differntly

  • @darkgran666 She lands on her heels, her posture is all over the place and she doesnt even try to recover it. So shes tired, and 100 times sounds a lot but i breakfall at least a hundred timed times in a 4 hour session and i can absolutely garantuee my breakfalling as well as most of the lower grades is better than that. Dont get me wrong, i know its difficult but you cant defend some of that breakfalling...

  • maybe you should back it up and train with us on a friday night!!!!

  • To give you an insight, in ONE set of basic throws the candidate will throw different students a total of 96 times and be thrown 96 times. This is done at a high tempo with no breaks. Over the two days Sheila probably completed AT LEAST 6 full sets of basic throws. If I were to guestismate I would say she probably hit the mat close to 1500 to 2000 times over the weekend including syllabus techiques.

  • Add to this a 12 mile run, river swim, log run, 350 press ups, 350 situps, 350 leg raises, 350 burpees, two rounds of milling and probably over 100 groud fights, all the weapon techniques and multiple times through the syllabus, I can guarantee that breakfalls were the least of her worries!! Your right there is no way I can defend that breakfalling :-) This is "TIRED" on a level that most people cannot comprehend or function correctly let alone continue to fight! Darkgran666 has the right idea!

  • Please also bare in mind that this 5 minute "highlight" video was made from nearly 19 hours of footage, I'm sure that during that time some of her breakfalls would have been up to your high standard! :-)

  • True Samurai spirit! She truely deserves her rank. This is quite possibly the most rediculous Shodan test i have ever seen...but in a good way. Nicely done!

  • Congratulions on this wonderful video.

  • This is probably one of the toughest Black Belt tests around. This woman has earned her belt.

    Ous Sensei!

  • Awesome work. Congratulations on Black belt, you deserve it.

  • I've never seen Ishin-Ryu like this before. I salute you!

  • Why cant we have a jiu jutsu discussion without mentioning that lame MMA crap? I came here for real martial arts, not to hear about that commercialized ground grappling, psuedo karate UFC bullshyt.

  • Hard training has / will pay off . Never give or give in great video & song

  • Jew Jutsu was dounded by Abraham in 605 B.C. It was a fighting style to be able to defend yourself from nomadic tribes in desert.

  • With all do respect this has to be the stupidest thing I have ever read in my life!

  • great video,

great to see some authentic jujutsu

  • Wow! What a tough chick! Ju Jutsu is very difficult!

    Congrats!:)

  • I just wanted to say that from one martial artist to the next I am proud of you and that what you went through was hard but it was so worh Huh?

  • You earned that well done!

  • i when to my first ju jitsu class today n it was great

  • the real jujitsu. Not BJJ

  • lol.....bjj is jiujitsu, but not samurai jiujitsu...their both REAL, their just very different.

i study both types of jiujitsu, gracie and koryu..and they both rule

  • Yes thats right. I like doing JJ, my school we do all, knife, club defence and real street defence. we also do ground defence. BJJ is good for the ring, i like the ground work they are amazing, but alot of JJJ clubs still use ground work. If you look back at the history gracie family teach JJJ and converrted it to BJJ to fit into the UFC.

  • no thats not true, they didnt convert it to fit the ufc...the ufc came like 60 years after gracie jiujitsu was started...

they just emphasized flowing ground techniques where both enemies could continue to battle using technical skill on the ground.

alot of japanese jiujitsu stuff seems like their techniques are mostly like one move finishes, where as gracie jiujitsu has alot of techniques for flowing through between the standing to the finisher. its all badass though, especially when mixed.

  • BJJ came from JJ, the gracies took what they learnt from japans MA and somewhat "converted" it. but BJJ still came from JJ

  • what did they "convert" ? every jujutsu ryu teaches groundfighting. the graces took an aspect of the jujutsu helio was taught and "marketed" if those who really didnt do MA, or who didnt have a clue what "REAL" MA was. fyi the highest ranked fighter in so called MMA is Chuck Lidell who is a sandan (3rd) the rest are shodan or below. your watching ameaturs thinking thier masters because you dont know real MA. ha ha

  • @7NEMISIS better than you jerk

  • thats not true, Helio gracie "the founder of gracie jiu jitsu" was a judoka and made bjj out of judo

    jujutsu - judo - bjj

so it really should be knowed as brazilian judo

    xD

  • My respect and admiration to Sheila Eglen Sensei. OSU!

  • Yay, i just saw my sensai in this video =]

  • RESPECT,

  • oous! This is how you train, this is how you test. Without perservance character and improve can not be attain.

  • Wow, what a video!!! I can't begin to imagine what you went through. My grading for Nidan took almost 5 hours. Your grading for Shodan to 2 days. You are the epitome of perseverence. Congratulations. You have truly earned and deserve your rank and bring honour to the martial arts.

  • I watched with interest the video of EGLEN Sensei. She is certainly a tough lady. To be honest it nearly brought a tear to my eyes when she let out the sigh of relief upon being told that she has passed. I believe it must have been you that then embraced her in a hug. Sensational effort.

I suppose only those of us that have been through the intensity of training for a black belt would understand how she felt.

  • You do relies I put that long list of stuff after my name so that it might be known that someone who's been around the block a few times thought your young Sensei Eglen did such a fine job? If you decide to post it ...just put what you will...Sensei or Renshi or Shihan or whatever. I have been sending it around and everybody loves it! Recently I started sending it to friends in the U.K. also

  • On behalf of all members of Sakura Ryu Ju Jitsu, Australia we would like to pass on a huge congratulations to Sensei Sheila EGLEN. The road to the coveted black belt in any quality style of Ju Jitsu is long and arduous which only the dedicated survive. Well done on your achievement Sensei!!!

  • My congratulations to Sensei Sheila and yourself as her guide. My only regret is the distance between your teaching and my eagerness to learn. There are too many politics in the UK with the practice of the Martial Arts. Many instruct but few teach.

  • Hi all, quick hello and late Congratulations to SENSEI SHEILA.

Well done, seen the video (poor you)

  • I cannot begin to tell you sheila what an inspiration you are to me and many manyothers. You have the spirit of a true warrior and you throughly deserve your title. When I feel like I don't want to train (like I do now as i get ready to come to your house!) I will watch this video and then I truely do now that what I am about to do is nothing compared with what you wne through. WELL DONE SENSEI, XXX

  • Buenos dias desde Santo Domingo, acabo de ver el video enviado en la presente direccion de Yuotube, exelente.

  • Very nice video, thank you for sharing. I can see it takes a little bit to earn a Shodan in your dojo

  • It's a great shame that there are so few proper martial artists around these days and so many charlatans coming out of the woodwork and conning decent people out of their hard earned money...

  • your video reminded me of the days I taught up the 47th infantry brigade here in Hyderabad for the commandos, many memoirs were revoked, thanks once again for the video

  • Looked like she earned that one. Congratulations!

  • A nice Video you made. Good self-defence!

I think that's good enough for the New York Bronx..... :-))

  • WOW really nice to see her graduate, my heart felt greetings for her & kudos to you dear Kevin,

  • Hello! The video is very good! Fantastic!

  • I had the opportunity to watch the video, please pass along my sincere congratulations to Sensei Sheila. Although it was a short video I could see the enthusiasm and courage I am sure she demonstrated during her grading. Job well done.

  • I was very impressed & I wanted her to know that Peter Freedman Sensei from the Freedman's Method Ketsugo Jujutsu system says great job & want to wish her all the best that training can bring her.

She definitely deserves her rank and grade.

  • Congratulations to her, it has not really get a gift. Iam very impressed.

  • Oussee! Well earned, you have a great spirit.

  • that was good.not many people can go through this tough trainig.good luck

  • Thank you for sending me the link to the Isshin-ryu Black Belt grading, it was most enjoyable to watch and my congratulations to the successful applicant. It was well deserved. Much more than our own 4 hour Sho Dan grading, but we do not have all the jogging, logging and all the other outdoor endurance testing that your system of Jiu-jitsu has.

  • Absolutely Fantastic! If you teach Angel to half your standard she'll be one tough cookie. You are a remarkable woman Congratulations!

  • Gratz on belt big bow;)

  • Congradulations Sensei on your recent Shodan grading, musch respect.

  • a true spiritual warrior

    JR

  • Oh my god!! You and I are poles apart, I could NEVER do that. I have the upmost respect for you! I had tears in my eyes and I hardly know you! Congratulations Sheila. Elkie (Wills wife)

Please give my best congratulations to sensei Sheila, there are many men in this world that could not do half the course let alone finish it.

  • Hope you are well, please give my best congratulations to sensei Sheila she has done something few will ever do or ever could do; only the best get there, she is a credit to you and all at the club.

  • Thank you for sending me this clip. I have a young boy (6) who has just started Ju-Jitsu. Watching this clip has helped me understand what Ju-Jitsu is all about and what Cameron will experience should he continue.

  • Many congratulations from Kaizen MAA in Leeds. A truly inspirational performance.

  • Congratulations first of all to Sensei Sheila Eglen and congratulations to Hanshi Kevin Pell for his fantastic work.

You made me cry at the end of the clip Btw lol!

  • Please pass on my congratulations to Sheila for an exceptionally impressive achievement. The video was inspiration, motivational and very emotional. She should be extremely proud.

My daughter has been a member of the Dereham dojo under Renshi Steward since day one and I would really like to think that one day she could achieve this level of dedication.

  • Thank you so much for sharing this with us. It is a very moving video, and like you say impossible to appreciate the physical and mental obstacles to overcome. Our heartiest congratulations to Sheila, clearly an incredible lady.

  • still makes me cry every time i watch it!!

  • Absolutely Fekkin Awesome

  • Afternoon, I have had a quick look at this today; fantastic please pass on my very best regards and respect.

  • Excellent news and great clip

Please pass on my congratulations to Sheila

  • Thank you again. Bless you and yours. Please convey my utmost respect and gratitude to Eglen Sensei for such a wonderful showing. It's so nice that every once in a while one gets to see something from the next generation of Yudansha that makes one feel that the art will go on in such capable and honourable hands! With Respect, Strength and Honour.

  • Simply put....I started my day by checking the news and my E-mail and saw what you had sent. I was moved to tears. I is inspirational. Sometimes even old boys like me can use a little inspiration and youthful enthusiasm.

  • I also took note that the Yudansha as well as others in some of the exercises reflected the emotional output of Eglen Sensei and a certain aspreedacore that moved me greatly. It became obvious that Eglen Sensei had put not only a great deal of time and effort to understanding and expressing her art early in the video, her spiritual investment and the support of her fellow Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu Ka unfolded nicely as the tape played on.

  • May I offer my deepest respects for Eglen Sensei's fine demonstration of your ways Pell Soke.

Eglen Sensei is a credit to your fine instruction and mentoring. The video you put on U-Tube should be inspirational to those who wish to follow in her footsteps or simply learn a little something about Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu.

  • Oh my god...after that video, I don't think any more will EVER be called let alone chosen! Unbelievable show of heart, strength and pure guts from SENSEI Sheila! Wow! Took my breath away!

I think probably 99.99% of the world's so called 'masters' could NEVER have gone through what you went through for your black belt. Well done Sensei on an awesome achievement!

  • TOMOE GOZEN

  • Please pass on my congratulations to Sheila on her Shodan grading. I hope you are keeping well

  • I am now permanently living in Tokyo, and having showed it to my colleagues at my local Hontai Yoshin Ryu club, we are all blown away by the strength, stamina, and discipline shown by Eglen Sensei.

Please pass on our sincerest congratulations.

  • I kindly ask you to give my best regards to Sheila and tell her that I am very happy for her that she has made her Black Belt. Congratulations! Superb!!

  • Best wishes to Sensei Sheila, fantastic, pushed to the limit grading, all should be proud!!!

  • Very G

  • Congradulations again to all the good persons of Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu Pell Dojos. Most especially Eglen Sensei and Pell Soke. Respectfully yours in Budo.

  • As I had only read a bit of Eglen's Sensei's writings and seen her bio befor, this video was the first opertunity I had to see her in training. Now I had the very pleasent opertunity to see her test (in some small part). Sensei Eglen is a fine reflection on you Pell Soke. What I saw on U-Tube presents Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu and its students in a splendid light! The video and music are superb. The good fellow-ship is palpable. Sensei Eglen's character is inspirational.

  • May I extend my congradulations to Eglen Sensei on entering the ranks of Yudansha in Ishin Ryu Ju-Jitsu. A "brotherhood" no more. I am certain that you will be more of a "family" then ever now, for what man or men are not the better off with an association-ship with a good lady.

  • Sensei sheilas grading is the best thing i have ever seen on you tube. About time some decent martial arts were on, we must add more!

It was just what i needed to see after coming home from a run feeling tired in pain feeling sick and pissed off, that reminds me why i am doing it!!

  • Great video, thank you very much for sharing! And our best congratulations to Sheila... (smile)!!!

  • Absolutely awesome. Great soundtrack to an awesome display of courage, fitness, determination and brute strength. Congratulations to Sensei Sheila

  • CONGRATULATIONS I think you did a fantastic job, great to watch and very inspiring. Thanks to Hanshi Pell for sending me the link,Dave Cooke.

  • Congratulations Sensei Sheila!!

Unbelievable to think I did my White Belt grading with you back in April 2002.

    Demonstration of Ki was fantastic!

  • Ouss one and all

Amazing video, even more amazing effort. Sensei Sheila, you are a wonder!

Ouss to Soke, and the rest of his yudansha who I am sure made Sensei work for every thread of her new obi.

  • O M G Awesome, respect to Sheila Eglen.

  • Good Grief!!

This made me cry!! I'm such an emotional wreck with stuff like this - Sheila cried and I joined in!!

She is a credit to you and the association.

  • God bless you and my Heartiest Congratulations, and welcome to the Fraternity of real Yudansha's!

Also to my Dear Friend Kevin Pell Hanshi:

  • On behalf of the Ronin Brotherhood LLC Groups, mentioned bellow and on mybehalf, we will like to congratulate Sensei Eglen for her texting and promotion to the Black Belt level. The "WAY" just began....good luck always. The over 500 black belts of Ronin send you a big OUSS!

    Florida, United States.

  • Many thanks for sending me this video clip. Sheila is obviously a pretty tough cookie. Not the the sort of woman you would take liberties with!

Watching the clip reminded me of the chi training you instructed me and a few others on at Longcross. Although I'm a 55 year old veteran now I still keep myself fit with running and weight training and I'm always interested in the training activities of others.

  • Ouss Soke, not much i can say really except wow! An emotional piece of film and an honour to have an insight into your Yudansha initiation.

    With strength, honour and respect,

  • Please pass on our congratulations to Sheila Eglen sensei... Very well earnt grading and she should be proud of herself as you are of her.

We hope to catch up with you soon.

  • Please pass on my congratulations to Sheila Eglen sensei; I suppose she is still on cloud nine!

I have watched the clip and she should be very proud of herself. It goes without saying that you are.

We hope to catch up with you in the near future.

  • I think i'm on my tenth viewing of this and it's left a few of my colleagues opened mouthed! Brilliant video and congratulations Sensei Sheila.

  • Just a few lines to say what an achievment both for Sheila and your self, yet again Isshin ryu sets a standard, it has always been a pleasure to be associated with you, I am so pleased for your sucess, but equally more important please pass on my congratulations to sheila, she has set a standard within jujutsu in the UK, that I am sure few could follow, I wa particularly impressed with her aikijujutsu within the video, it was of a high standard.

  • Thank you for sharing that, it brought a lump to my throat. Once again, my congratulations to Sensei Sheila, one of the few indeed

  • thank you very much for your E-Mail.

I enjoyed that very much. Very impressive!

  • Well done Sheila!!

  • Impressive!

  • Thank you for the clip. Please pass my warmest congratualtions to Sheila. I am impressed with her ability.

Nice to hear from you again. How are things going at the honbu dojo?

    Please keep well.

  • Please pass on my congratulations to Sheila on attempting and passing such an insane test! :-)

I hope you are all keeping well.

  • Dear Hanshi

Please pass on our congratulations to Sheila Eglan sensei... Very well earnt grading and she should be proud of herself as you are of her.
