  • After finally having some time to take a listen at this one.....I WANNA COPY!

Especially after listening from 4:40 onward! MAN that reminds me so much of the 1978 RTS's that the University Transit Service once had. Same engine/tranny specs as this one, had the "slopeback" until CTS got theirs in 1982. Then they upgraded to the "backpack".

  • @MetroLinerXLZ You got it i got to go back to work at 5:00 PM this evening but i should be back home by 2:00AM Ill look for the recording and hopefully you should have it sometime early tomorrow morning.

  • the RTS was a strong bus. Wichita Transit drove them for 26 yrs before finally retiring them all

  • do you have any of the 6v92 Bus Recordings of a San Antonio VIA Buses? Our RTS Buses in San Antonio are slowly retiring.

  • No didn't get to ride those but i don't know i saw a picture of bus 656's engine and it looked like a 6L71TA or some tipe of Cummins engine if you live in San Antonio go and try to get a video or a recording of one of them i my self don't get vacation time until March of next year and by that time those buses will probably be gone.

  • 6L71TA? I didn't know there was a 6L71TA RTS Bus Before. All I know is that there was some 6v92 Buses on the RTSws. but If I go, I will Catch one of those RTS Buses. I can record any bus sound I can Catch it as long as it was there on a Bus.

  • There is a video recording you uploaded around six month ago of Long Beach Transit bus #9202 but with pictures of VIA RTS buses well one of those pictures has bus #656 with the engine hood open pause the video and put it in full screen and you will see that the engine is not a 6V92TA it looks more like a 6L71TA but with missing parts if that's the case then you might have something very rare that i didn't notice when i was there or is just that one bus.BTW They do sound like 6V92TA engines.

  • Well for the last 5 years the RTS have hung tough despite efforts to retire them all.The Champion Buses failed which was in their favor. The demand for bus sevice is so great at rush hours they are still needed. However Via lost its contract w the schools no more school runs and because of the Disabled Act require buses to accomidate disabled people. more have been retired I think there might be 30 left.2 years ago there were around 60.I heard new buses will be coming out next year which means..

  • Sounds like the 8V71 Flxibles. Detroit Diesel V8's are the best

  • Man i remember Cleveland RTA having both 1979/80 RTS Slope Backs and Regular Backs wit 8V71s as power. Sounded jus like these....that RTS moaning whine and all.

  • MCTS uses to have 1980 GMC RTS series

    3100-3218 T8H-203 with DD 8v71

    3219-3224 T8J-203 with DD 6v92TA

    3225-3249 T8H-203 with DD 8v71

  • Did the RTS with 8V71 engines buses ever repowered newer engines or did they keep their those engines till their retirement?

  • MCTS repowered one bus number 3216 with Detroit Diesel 6v92TA

  • all of Cleveland's 8V71 powered RTS's except one retained their original engines and V730 trannies until they were retired.

  • The 17 year old 8V-71 powered RTS is mine! Not Yours!

  • Oh boy first of all there was no such thing as an 1992 RTS bus with 8V71N engine second this i recorded this bus along with two others on Sept 20 2000 and the year before i recorded 5 8V71N powered RTS buses and 1 6V71N powered RTS buses. Now if you got a recording of this bus upload it on youtube im sure many RTS bus fans would love to hear it. ah Just 2 questions do you know the month and date when this bus was built on and how long is this recording really? I already know the answer do you?

  • 1979 GMC RTS (RETIRED)

  • Cleveland had that same type bus which

were called slantbacks the RTS II's we

had were the 4000 series 4100-4256

there were a total of 156 of these buses

    Cleveland ordered in 1979.

  • I remember reading somewere that the Cleveland 1979 RTS buses were very fast that they actually ran at speeds of 85mph.

  • Wow I did not ever think I'll find any thing posted on You Tube with the First generation RTS II Series with the Detriot

Diesel 8V-71N Engine and Allison Trans.

Cleveland had these same models ours

were the 1979 RTS IIs with that same engine end power train, but ours were louder because Cleveland RTA ordered

theirs with glass mufflers, Classic Slant Backs.

  • Ohh man, This my favorite engine sound of GMC RTS, My city Lansing, Michigan CATA used to have 1979 GMC RTSes (series 300-317) is this particular engine sound of it.

  • Please post more! I can't get enough!

  • you got damn good recordings

  • Many people call the VIA 300's series TH-8201 RTS buses 1978 models this bus was built on Dec 17 1977. I still call it 1977 model bus.

  • I definitely love the sound of the good ol' 8V71 on a GMC RTS!

  • Me too man me too. I recorded this bus in September of 2000 the VIA 1999 Nabies in San Antonio TX many of them were already in the streets so i was very lookie to have found this bus and 2 other of my other VIA RTS buses with 6V71N engines that i recorded. The others were recorded on my trip there in September of 1999 i will upload one of them soon.

  • Sure. Take your time.

  • u should find a mbta gmc rts recording and then upold it for me.

  • I don't have any of the MBTA GMC RTS buses i think those had 6V71TA engines i do have 4 6V71N powered RTS's 3 from San Antonio TX a 1980 and 1983 GMC RTS T7W204 buses and 1 1988 TMC RTS T70-206 RTS bus and from Disney World in FL 1 1981 GMC RTS T8W604 bus all with the none turbo 6V71N engines and yes this includes the VIA 1988 TMC RTS bus.

  • aw man. i wish u did. i miss hearing and ridin them so much. the 1985's had just the 6v71 turbo, 1986,1987 gmc rts and 1989 tmc rts had the 6v92ta or the

    6v92ta ll

  • cool but why is the picture cracked

  • It looks like it had been folded before.

  • The picture is from an 18 year old and very folded Bus Ride magazine.

  • Beautiful clip! The 8V-71 in an RTS is just a lovely sound! Please tell me you have more!

  • I got 8 8V71N powered RTS buses in total 6 from San Antonio TX 1977 GMC TH-8201 RTS buses and 2 1979 GMC T7H-603 RTS buses own by Greyhound when they had some tipe of contract with Miami Dade Transit and were working on the MDT route-29.I don't have many pictures so i have to put these old ones but Im making models of these buses to go along with the sound recordings the next time i put one of these old RTS's or Flxible recordings on youtube the model buses will look almost like the real bus.
