The way he holds his sticks isn't incorrect at all. 'French grip' is what it's called and it allows for more articulate playing imo, it isn't resticted for tympani or jazz either.
lol haha dude ur fuckin bad ass at french grip? do u play tamphany in school or what? french is with ur thumbs facing up, match grip is palms down, and traditional is the one they use in drumline! :)
those are some insane singles you got goin dude. i think you could march piping with that grip actually. although you'll need to learn traditional, but other than that, sounds great.
You're not being sarcastic are you? Wen I said what I said I wasn't saying what you were doing was bad or anything... I was just wondering why you were using that grip.
@Mirber i just read the few comments, there is a misunderstanding, You are playing matched grip, but matched french, French grip is thumbs up, german, is back of your hands up, and american, is right in the middle, so you are french grip, and matched grip. hope i cleared that up ;) and nice vid, good finger technique
yeah i used to have that kind of hand position, but hold it with your palm facing the ground like a V, and you play much better after about a week of getting used to it.
yup yup i like it. if i had just listened && not watched, i'd like it better. but it's ok. regardless your form [which isn't the WORST i've seen], you DO have some pretty sweet chops. =]
He doesn't have poor form. Its called a french grip just because most people use german and traditional, french grip is perfectly acceptable. The only real problem is the pinkys and when hands move in. And please watch some jojo mayer before you dis french grip.
your hands keep getting closer and closer...and when you diddle, your pinkeys stick out lol but for match grip it sounded ok....except for a couple of accidental stick clicks
why would one play traditional on a flat drum? I realize its "traditional " to do so and fine.. but match grip would be more proper for modern drum carrying method. Traditional grip is for old march style slung drums on the hip. As to get at the drum head from the angle created by a moving drum riding the hip and thigh. Like a bagpipe and drum corps. not that its proper match grip either.. but for sake of argument.
I guess people use it to keep the tradition going. plus it does kinda look cool. but yeah i used matched as i feel i have more control and and has more pros than trad.
I've been playing drums for about 6 years, but your really good. I'm impressed by your speed. I usually go to the "vic firth" website and practice the rudiments they have. It really helps with stick control, speed, and endurance.
WOOOOO french grip
drumperson42 3 months ago
Keep your left pinky on the stick. It'll give you better control.

basicalyimsam 3 years ago
whats wrong with traditional grip?
Drummerdude1639 3 years ago
nothing, basicalyimsam is a noob.
metrognome69 3 years ago
Last time I checked, this "normal" grip (or "matched" if thats what you mean) doesn't involve the thumbs (or thumbnails rather) facing up.
dahkillahmac 3 years ago
He's playing French grip

I didn't know I was using french grip. I'll research it.

dahkillahmac 3 years ago
no, no sarcasm. I just don't know what French grip looks like. I thought I was using matched grip.
Mirber 3 years ago
@Mirber
french grip is when palms face eachother in matched grip. German is when palms face directly down during matched. American is a 45 degree angle
RA710 1 year ago
@Mirber French grip is thumbs yp, resting on top of the stick
matchstick is thumbs wrapped around almost like holding a baseball bat or something =p

If you don't even know the name of the grip your describing (german)then I doubt you should be giving advice on technique...
Drummerdude1639 3 years ago
you're holding the sticks the wrong way
your palm should be facing the floor
and you should relax your arms
they look really tense and they were sticking out
you're not a bird haha that's what my teacher always tells me... i used to do that
but yeah... relax and palm down
turtleteen13 3 years ago
dude... people give you shit for your technique, but you're clearly better than %99 of drummers. i don't really understand their arguments.
cohenmkarnell 3 years ago
keep pinky in and palms facing the floor
Godsdrummer4lif3 3 years ago
you've got some serious timpani grip but overall, grade A

that was pretty good. and yeah matched grip like you said to that one kid is acceptable, but when you play, your pinkys shouldnt come off the sticks.
KennaSnare2010 4 years ago
ok learn how to hold the sticks then we will go from there
shockerwvirtue 4 years ago
not everyone has to use traditional grip. matched grip is acceptable
Mirber 4 years ago
bt when that even looks like shit its not acceptable but your probably a set player and most set players have bad technique when it comes to snare
