Kurt says in an interview that a lot of his lyrics were just thrown together right before going into the studio, but it's obvious that he cared a lot about his lyrics, because there many different recordings of songs having many different arrangements of verses and words but the same music. He was experimenting with the impact of his words. The final versions would always have the strongest set of lyrics.
