I remember feeling so bad for her in the 92 olympics, because I don't know what happened, but she just didn't perform like this, and they kept showing replays of her messing up over and over. That's when people seemed to stop ignoring Shannon Miller. After that, I don't remember hearing anything about Kim Zemeskal, wonder what happened to her?
Yeah, I really worry about gymnastics, because the new judging system makes the routines much less exciting and more prone to error. When a crowd finds a sport boring and can't understand the judging, the stadiums become emptier and emptier. I hope that doesn't continue to happen, but it's not looking good.
I love her!! I remember watching this when, I was still in the single digits;).....I love when gymnastics meets are in the United States. The crowds go insane!!!
It used to be that the floor routines were my favorite back in the day when they were as exciting as this one was; it was great seeing the dance elements blended with the gymnastics. Now the floor routines are just a series of tumbling passes with some poses stuck here and there. It used to be fun comparing someone like Kim to Shannon Miller, who each had their own style. Now the floor routines are boring.
I've never heard a more thunderous reaction than this one from a from a gymnastics performance. Amazing. What this the first time she performed her trademark triple whip-back?
@bluebirdsin No, she had performed the triple whip-back in competition since 1989. The crowd knew that with a great floor routine in her final rotation, she would be the first American female gymnast to win the all-around gold medal :)
It doesn't matter if Kim had grace and beauty in her routine. It's not ballet; it's gymnastics. As long as there is energy, which Kim was known for, and excitement, it is memorable. She doesn't have to be one of the Soviet pixies that everyone drools over; she has her own style and people should appreciate that side, not just one aspect of gymnastics.
Kim is the greatest inspiration of mine. Every time I don't feel like working out, I watch this video and it instantly inspires me to hit the gym and work out for hours.
as far back as Nadia Karolyi (I was about to write Lugosi lol) gave his gymnasts this cheesy jazz music to perform to on FX - I guess it pumps of the audience but I'm not crazy about it.
being a gymanst now, and seeing this vid from then, gymnastics seemed to be more fun back then. it looked like she and the crowd were really having fun, as apposed to today where its all skills and no working of the crowd
I attended the European championships a few months ago........I echo some comments on here, it was BORING, the women gymnasts did very similar routines, multiple leaps, spins and nothing else on floor ( many had non existant 'routines' ) why are the FIG ruining the sport of gymnastics?????
this was mos def a great exercise. i'm in the camp believing kim deserved to win the world title AA based on that code of points. all of her sets were at maximum start value & she executed perfectly even though there were several who competed more difficult sets. she did what she needed. but i think this is why the code used for 1993-96 was the best of all b/c it recognized the need to reward others who took more risk.
@robertnicci yeah man i understand gymnastics has become more about combinations and extreme difficulty indstead of grace and strength talent it is sad she was one of the last girls of that era
it wasnt her as much as the era she competed in. first of all she was at home competing at worlds, she also didnt have all these ridiculous requirements that exsist today. gymnastics sucks now because of the FIG. for example, gymnasts arent even allow to compete 3 whip backs in a row anymore, banned, so why would they get excited like they used to when the skills are boring and everyone is forced to use the same thing to get credit in order to have a chance at winning
@ReedieBop yes, her score has been in the video description since I put it up on YouTube, you just have to expand the description to read it all. She scored a 9.987 :)
That's because back then, they awarded you PROPORTIONATELY to how well you performed whatever it was you'd planned to do.
Now, you basically gotta get out there and do things scientists didn't even know COULD be done-- just to stay competitive in the ridiculous bonus system that replaced our time-tested and beloved 10-based system.
I say phooey on that, and I doubt I'm alone in that opinion.
She could work a crowd like no other! I idolized her when I was a gymnast back then and it still gives me chills the way the crowd cheered her on!!!!! She was awesome!
this shows the art of building energy within an arena - many gymnasts lost this with the new requirements they now need to fulfill. an era to be missed, this is!

She was my favorite US gymnast at the time...Shannon Miller was just too skinny, too dainty, too slender, and not enough power. Oh the irony...

In 1991 she had In the Mood (popularized by Glenn Miller). In 1992, she had a Rock Around the Clock and Johnny Be Good mix.
JohnPhilipSousa519 2 years ago
Yes its "In the Mood" but at :50 to 1:10 it switches to "Sing Sing Sing" by L.Prima made popular by Benny Goodman.

Awesome dance and leaps (and not bad tumbling), but a 9.987? Then again, scores in this era were often unbelievably high by today's standards.
