Fact is : you're more likely to put the same amount of stress on the airplane doing a steep turn, as doing a loop. You're doing 360 degrees on the Y axis instead of the X axis.
But saying that.. rolling, or even looping a 172, or any airplane for that matter, is completely safe if done correctly. A roll is a 1G maneuver, and a correct loop is around +3.5, -0.5 floating at the top. A 172 or standard 152 have utility category limits (+4.4/-2ish)
The problem is that the next guy flying this airplane doesn't know what has transpired. The 172 will generally fail in the stabilizer after few cycles of this. Seen it before. Be stupid alone over un-populated areas and don't take passengers in the plane ever again. Many of us have done this kind of thing when we were young but then we learned and got real aerobatic airplanes and wear the proper equipment. These antics do eventually catch up to you.
I hope they used eddy current on this poor Cessna post flight to see if it was full of cracks! Hehe bodies hit the floor...right after the wings separate!
totally agree with @OWHSsoccer07. It was cool. If the guy wants to kill himself let him. @blueb0g... stop being such a fucking tattletale and grow the fuck up. i'm sure you are probably an only child and never had the shit kicked out of you, but I wanted to take the opportunity to let you know how gay everyone thinks you are... You're comment is the exact reason you probably have no friends and play world or warcraft all the time dip shit. get laid and try to calm down.
everyone with the angry comments needs to just settle the fuck down. if he wants to do this let him. it looked cool. and there are struts for a reason, extra support. the airframe can handle more than what it is rated for in the POH.
Any plane can make a loop. HOWEVER it takes a skilled pilot to do a loop in a plane not certified because the pilot must do the loop without putting any stress ( g force )on the wings. This is only for a expert pilot with money to throw away and a parachute just in case the wings snap off.
Its VFR, losing the artificial horizon wouldn't make crash. He has visual reference. Not to mention he can reset it once he is level or on the ground so no one will ever find out.
@Thor7036 Utility only allows you to get more acrobatic maneuvers like stalls, lazy eights, chandelles, NOT AEROBATIC like whip stalls and loops ect. So utility or not, still illegal and absolutely unsafe.
@Thor7036 If I understand correctly, the only thing that makes a C172 "utility" is the weight and balance (that is, the plane is lightly loaded with a forward CG).
@Thor7036 Those bars have nothing to do with "utility". Dj student was correct, its to do with the MAUW, and a forward c of g. utility just means the +ve limits are increased to 4.4g (for an N model onwards) providing no rear pax or cargo is on board. Def not a clever thing to be doing in a 172, VNE can come up very quick plus big wings = very high g loading's. Dangerous

@aratidwell yes it is... 172s are for normal and utility categories... Go read the FAR/AIM and a POH

@nevervne yeah but assuming you are right maybe the Y axis is made to withstand more stress than the X axis.

NICE! When do the wings fall off? 172 hasn't been stressed for acrobatics, if I recall correctly...

What the fuck. Find the registration of that aircraft and ground it right now.

The "music" got me angry. The fact that you're doing aerobatics in a 172 pisses me off even more.

@manny298 How do you do any maneuver without stressing the wings, much less a loop?

Can I rent that airplane next and have the wings fall off in level flight?
I would like to know has any wings bust off in flight in a 172?

is that a utility 172?

@djstudent utility config is reinforced, easiest way to see it is in the cockpit with the reinforcement bars over the instrument panel

may i say, that my 57' 172 would never hold up in that kind of maneuver!
