@Steveman27 ive been playing this game for years and i cant beat it. its really a testament to how well you need to know the game to beat it. I remember sitting with my cousins for hours trying to get past stage 4.... good times, but sooooo frustrating :/

I have a feeling that during level 5 with you getting hit all those times, that it was on purpose just to add drama to the situation making the viewer think how you're gonna beat the megatough grim reaper, and you did a good job at it. i didn't know you could stun him like that with regular attacks and holy water right where he appears.

this is the kind of stuff not even Angry Video Game Nerd knew about when he played it. he's reviewed Castlevania 1 through 3 and the later ones.

People comment about the grim reaper and the part leading up. Yeah, I had this as a kid when it came about and that section/boss is about as tough as it gets in video games. I actually called a hotline for Nintendo Power Magazine in 1990 to ask how to beat the Grim Reaper. I recall the advice didn't help much, but I beat 'em after like 20-30 tries.

I've beaten him before, but I never thought to try it with holy water. I don't know why it never occurred to be. You can beat every other boss with zero effort by spamming the holy water. Awesome!

The credits are slight alterations on legendary horror actors. For instance, "Belo Lugosi" is an alteration of Bela Lugosi, who played dracula in the 1930s and is commonly believed to be the best actor to play the vampire; "Boris Karloffice" should be Boris Karloff, who portrayed Frankenstein; "Mix Schrecks" instead of Max Schreck, who played Nosferatu in the classic of the same name. Consider it a subtle inside joke by the programmers.

As good as this game is, I prefer the DS versions.

I'm playing through Portrait of Ruin currently.

While it'll never be the classic that the original is, I prefer it because a lot of things are quicker and less primitive. Probably not all people like double jumps, a huge weapon selection, many different items and a more adventure-based style with more mazes and puzzles, but I like it.

I'm not a graphics whore, my reasons for liking Portrait of Ruin over the original don't have to with graphics.

While I admit this is a fun and challenging game for its time, IMO the graphics were butt nasty. The color palette was so ugly. Its kinda funny that what made a lot of games from this era so tough was that the controls were pretty terrible. Ghost's & Goblins anyone?

Well, I think that graphics are not really THAT important. Remember that his game is from 1987, and the NES was an 8-bit console. When Castlevania came out, those colours were okay for the time.

I am playing this game at the moment, but have bitten off a little bit more than I can chew, so to speak. I tried to finish the game while only using the regular/smallest form of the whip, but I just can't seem to beat Death this way. With the extended whip he is beatable, but the small whip seems to lack the necessary range to get inside on Death.
