  • hey guys I gave my PS3 to the electronics teacher at my high school and basically told him about this process. My ps3 is an 80 gb FAT (i think 2nd gen) and it has only got the YLOD one time and i used to game so hard and so long on that thing... im just hoping this method works for longer than a month...

  • Stop hating nice vid

  • wow.. just wow... you have fuck all idea what your talking about

  • you are a Friggin moron. you don't need to do all that crap. take it apart put the shields back on heat it up using a propane torch. place copper shims between the heatsinks and processors use thermal paste and reassemble. you are such a friggn MORON!!!

  • why does this moron sound like he just got off the short bus?

  • It should be noted that this is really only good for getting your PS3 working temporarily to get save game data off the hard drive and onto a USB thumb drive or cloud saved via PS+. If your unit is YLODing it's time to invest in a new PS3.

  • pcs most make pc power like ps3

  • You have your PCB Board..... (For idiots You have your poly carbonate board board.....)

  • @joblessalex PCB = printed computer board. Not polycarbonate board. lolz.

  • @ConvexSpade Oh well, Still is redundant either way.

  • Yes it does. Make sure you cover it but not completely. Just enough to keep it from burning. After wait 15 min to cool down and put thermal paste. Use your fingers to spread it on the cell processor and RSX. Remove fan and heat sink to clean and put vent into the system that it can breath better and relaese more heat. I play mine with no problem.

  • use all the board i repair these i did 2 tests one on just the cpu & gpu

    it lasted 3 weeks

2nd one did all the board let stand for 1 hour

used heat pads fuck that compound its yesterday shit and my ps3 is running now 12 months later brilliant vid man

  • Place entire motherboard in oven in aluminal foil

  • @jblackrevo9 @jblackrevo0 Lolol. That would fry the entire motherboard...

  • @MomoMonstahh You cover it in aluminum foil.I've did it and Mine works better than it did before and havent had any problem with it.

  • @jblackrevo9 Are you sure it works? Because mine shuts off now with a blinking red light and sometimes it blinks yellow then red then it goes off.

  • You should put it in the oven for 18 mins on 400 degrees, I have no problem wth it now except i had to clean fan and had to reflow because i opened the system.

  • @TheWargod66 yes and no, it is highly recommended because it helps transfer heat better which prevents having to reflow multiple times

  • Is it have to be silver thermal paster?

  • lol lasted 3days to a week for fuk sake lol get a reball

  • my local shop has an actual reflowing machine that doesn't require a heat gun. in fact he highly discourages people from using heat guns since their heat isn't as accurate and the heat distribution is also not as precise; he says there's a higher chance of accidentally frying the board.

  • lol, you don't know what a pcb board is but you seriously thought you did. 2 pcb board… lol.

  • If I choose not to connect the Fan back. Will the PS3 be unable to even show a Red light when I flip the Backswitch on? Because my PS3 doesn't have any light at all when I switch the backswitch and I think It's because My Fan Cables are a bit bad. Maybe I fried my Motherboard? If I fry the motherboard will flipping the backswitch on and off not show even a red light? I did everything but the PS3's backswitch doesn't do anything like the PS3 isn't even connected when It is.

  • Jeah keep on using circling motions - they are very good if the solder is already melted, so it can flow around and cause short circuit. Why you guys just stop posting such stupid videos? A proper reflow is done with a pre heater unit, a heatgun which is FIXED and some thermo couples to get good temperature readings...

  • Thought you had to add flux to the BGS's also during reflow.

  • lul nuub yur so gei i pown u wet my gpu6990gtx hd

  • Whats the difference between artic 5 and just a normal Thermal Compound?

  • Comment removed

  • DUDE HAVE THESE MOTHERF*CKIN LAME ASSES ON YOU TUBE SOUND LIKE THEIR HIGH ON BANANA PEELS!!!

  • solid cap!

  • Lol. All you guys with your heat guns. This is a temporary fix. Looks well and good on the video because the repair has not tested against time and stress. The problem will come back very shortly. So quit misleading everyone into thinking they can fix there ps3's like this. It is far from an actual fix! These heat guns don't come close to actually melting lead free solder under them heat fortified bga chips if you actually did some how you WILL have major warping on the board and popcorning as

  • what temp do you aet the heat gun on?or did you use a generic one that doesnt have temp control?if you did do you at least know the recomended temp the gun should be set to?also what exactly is this doing ?is it actually melting the solder on the board where the chips are soldered to the board?then re-hardening it?and if it is wont the solder run together ,causing 2 leads from the one of the chips to connect together and cause a short?is it possible that could happen?and i hear its temporary but

  • @iDE5TR0Y It only needs to be done once if done correctly.

  • If done correctly it is a permanent fix.

  • If you are worried about your PS3 getting overheated heres the solution - dont play more than 4 hours a day. your ps3 and ur brain will get overheated if done so.

  • u can get thermal paste at a radio shack! or a fry's electronics

  • a reflow consists of removing the chip from the board, cleaning old solder from both the chip and the board, then, using professional equipment like a grid soldering machine, solder the chip back on, with better quality solder material. That along with a better fan and better thermal compound will make your device last longer than Sony or Microsoft ever knew was possible.

  • @mcardo99 actually smart ass a reflow is just what it sounds. you REFLOW the existing solder.

  • 0:52 that's a big ass fan... u tried reversing the polarity? it turns into a hoover.

  • If dust gets on cpu and gpu could that cause it to fry

  • What is all this? What do reflow do?

  • Comment removed

  • @MrEvolution2000 Only if your an idiot.

  • I'm currently working on a new cooling project related to the PS3. Stay tuned for updates. ;)

  • @The1Z Is the yellow light only associated with the gpu cpu problem ? also what settings was the heat gun on? what temperature ?

  • Is this just a temporary fix? Because that would suck if you'd have to keep doing this over and over again lol. Im attempting to do this too hopefully soon but hopefully i wont have to keep doing it :(.

  • @sombagonkaron

Ye this is just a temporary fix. The longest I've had it work is a month and then it goes out again. Then again, I've also heard people say it lasted over 3 months. I guess results will vary.

  • @The1Z yea it does vary it depends how long you've had it, how big of a gamer you are, environment (hot or cold) and if you changed the thermal paste when it started dying.. my ps3 doesn't get the YLOD Yet but i changed the thermal paste just yesterday for the first time in 5 years. around a year or 2 ago, the fans were loud in 15-20 mins after game play now it just turns on after 1-2 hours of gameplay. if i have changed the thermal paste 1-2 years ago, right now fans wouldn't have turned-on

  • @sombagonkaron To fix it good and not temporary is making a reballing read and search hoy to do it. And also putting fan in 12v mode so it never get overheat again, you would never get video Ylod again with reballing en 12v fan. sorry my english, i speak spanish

  • I DONE IT ALL THE SAME!!! BUT STILL NOT WORK!!

  • where can you get thermol paste?! the thermol paste i have on my gpu and cpu is getting kinda dry! i wanted to take apart my Ps3 again to clean it but I dont want to dry out the thermol paste

  • @9thaccount

    Most pc stores carry paste.

  • Comment removed

  • @9thaccount Get arctic silver 5 it is far better with conducting heat and doesn't dry nearly as fast.

  • @cleftdick how much of the silver 5 should be used because i put a very thin layer and it work for two weeks only. thanks

  • @123123123cesar not very much, it should only be a thin layer that you spread with a business card or something but it can be counterproductive if you put too much on

  • @9thaccount you can get it at a fry's electronics or radioshack

  • @9thaccount ebay has thermal paste i suggest arctic silver 5. but make sure that you dont get any of ti on anything other than the GPU and CPU

  • in your description you said this is your 4th or 5th time ? youve had to us ethis fix 5 times ? is there a moren permanant method of fix ?

  • @sam46952

Yes reballing your GPU or buying a new PS3 :-p.

  • DOES THIS HELP WHEN MY PS3 FREEZES WITH STATIC?

  • can i pls ask you something when my screen turns in green flikkering hase that something to do with ylod? because i bought 60 gb ps3 with lod and i have fix it the way you doing it but now months later i dont have ylod but my screen turns into green flikkering so maybe you can help me out here . thx

  • when u apply thermal compound. (using artic silver 5 that is) u only need to put a small dab in the middle about the size of a rice grain. thinner is better. the misconception is that u need more and must cover the entire cpu/gpu heatsink which is entirely wrong. i think most people who are not successful are spreading it around which creates air bubbles. just dab the middle and once u slap the bigger heatsink on top press tight and screw. dont lift up again or else air bubbles will form. gl

  • PSP has 8 cores XD

  • @ryan123456781 actually it doesn't. it has one core with 8 spe's. its actually a lot more powerful and energy effiecient than a lot of other multi core systems.

  • man... I did this twice and still the same, stupid bliking red light :( Im so pissed

  • you gotta use flux first or it wont last very long...i speak from experience.I did the reflow without flux then researched proper reflowing teqnique and flux is definately needed or the solder becomes hard when cooled and just cracks wich is the problem to begin with...not that it overheated...its caused by prolonged use and not letting the unit cool enough before using again

  • @420NINJABOOT any video here on how to apply the flux. thanks

  • 2:40 Shooting sounds :D

  • it worked for me thx!!!!

  • easier way to do this is to use a hair dryer on the top of the heat plates after wiping them down with the alcohol. I wouldn't recommend using a heat gun as they get extremely hot and you don't need that much heat to re flow, at least 230 degrees. Hair Dryer does the trick, let it sit for like 5 minutes and you'll have the same effect.

  • The silver trays that hold the motherboard are not PCB's. A PCB is short for Printed Circuit Board. Those are just simply motherboard trays.

  • well dude i guess i'm gonna have to try this? i have tried everything else already! i bought a heat gun today. my problem is no video output not yellow light of death. is there a chance this will still work? it weird because if i go into safe mode i get video then i reset the settings and when it reboots nothing but a black screen? i can hear sound though?

  • @shawn2571 did you try holding your finger on the power button until you hear two beebs...this resets the video output to an available source...i used mine w/hdmi cable then had same problem when i tried the rca jacks(av cables)hold it down for like 15 secs or until you hear two beebs

  • @420NINJABOOT yeah i tried that buddy!n several times i think it is something more serious because i have tried all 6 options on the recovery menu and i tried reformatting the hard drive in a pc and i tried the heat gun fix? no luck! i just sold it on ebay and got my money back though! now i have one working ps3 and one with the red screen of death which i cannot seem to fix either? oh well i got them cheap it was worth a shot?

  • Just wondering man... ermmm... whats that gel you use? i cudnt quite here you on the vid :P

  • Why do you advise me not to tryy this??

  • this kid sounds like he has been kicked in the head by a donkey :)

  • @iloveme2723

    Cool Story, Bro.

  • @iloveme2723 lmaooooooooooooooooooooooooooo

  • @iloveme2723 WTF?!?!?!?!?!

  • @Erikih what you fcking moaning at ?

  • Dod you say that you put alchaol on the CPU and GPU before introducing the thermal compound?

If you did what type of alchaol can you use normal drinking alchaol?

  • @Bangercv

    Isopropyl alcohol aka rubbing alcohol.

I would advise you not to attempt this.

  • @The1Z LMAO, you probably shouldn't if you can't spell alcohol!

  • @The1Z 70% or 90%??

    u never specified.

  • @The1Z is that wintergreen alcohol? you need to use at least 98% otherwise it will leave chemicals under the thermal paste that restrict heat transfer

  • Fuck i bought a soldering heat gun when i needed a Temperature Heat Gun

  • @HolidayMell HAA-Ha!! (in NELSON's voice)

  • @SiRTHiZZL3 I had to take it back and get my $. I then bought the Heat Gun from the hardware store and fixed it :)

  • can someone please explain to what reflow/heating up the motherboard and chips mean and what it does? thanks :)

  • If you've built so many computers...

You would know not to clean off any computer components with wintergreen alcohol...

    Dumbass.

  • you doing it al wrong, you have to first raised in steps the temperature of the motherboard,

and than use ifraredlight to heat the BGA chips.

  • @azamatms

Then you should be able to use the correct terminology when referring to parts.

  • @azamatms

The "green sheet" you're referring to is called the motherboard.

  • can i use a hair dryer

  • @davidkropodra no not hot enough

  • Wow, don't you need to be grounded? Like first rule of pc building or any electronics.

  • @Avataryoutuification

Yes you should be and that's a good point. However, I was doing this for a school project and I had done it many many times before so I didn't bother. I just touched something metal and called it a day lol.

  • I never knew the fan was that big o.o

  • This Video IS SHIT!!!!!

  • Guys my ps3 was working fine until one day it just went boom i heard a sound of that of a ballon burst and it stopped working and after i restarted it...........it gave me a yellow light i thought one of my capacitor pooped up and i changed the power unit but still the same result................plz help me guys...................by the way i live in india

  • teh cell

  • wouldn't it just be easier just to buy a new motherboard instead of going through all this bull plus i heard u never use alcohol on electronics.

  • I never gotten that, but my main problem is the damn line that pop out of no where, kinda like a spider-web looking thing, or just a huge glitch line across my character to the stages. It does it to every game, how do I fix that? I figure it might be the graphic cards and so does my nephew. Any idea? please contact me as soon as possible I got my PS3 on November 16 2006 so ya is the old model with all the kick ass features.

  • Hey whats up guys and ladys I have great news about red ring of death I just fixed my own ps3 red ring of death I watched a few videos from youtube and did some extra stuff and bam it worked . I did Clean both cpu and gpu from the motherboard I did not add any super gel Bullshyt like #5 heat compond stuff! And i did put only motherboard in my (oven) 425degrees at 10.00 mintues. I waited 4 a half hour Dont touch anything not even motherboard I hooked it up and no more red ring of death thank you

  • @Jflames23 GTFO troll

  • @SalCervantes88 lol okay u funny but im hood!! i fixed my ps3 dog dead ass!!!!

  • okay i had the ylod twice and fixed it i just got my ps3 today and it runs quite good but there is a really noisy voice i think the fan makes it

and my ps3 lagged twice so should i worry or is it okay because i don't remember thouse things happened before sure it lagged but not twice a day maybe once a week or maybe a month so please if you know what's wrong with it tell me :)

  • I've done this 4 times already and my ps3 got the ylod again yesterday =(. I'm getting tired of buying thermal compound and having to open up my ps3.

  • this is te blueray driv DUHHH

  • 4:39

do whatever ok i will play your ps3

    o yea i cant

  • No offense, but that was a terrible way to apply thermal paste, not to mention you used way too much.

  • You should always use no clean flux before reflowing all of those spots ;)

  • this is ur 4th to 5th time? i think the ps3 main problem is the fan. somehow the fan stop running like it use to. i'm planning to do this and buy a new fan on ebay to see. if it work right this time.

  • SKIP to 4 min into the video to skip all the useless B.S.

  • @ryobie1

Because naming the parts you just removed from the ps3 is useless bullshit.

  • @The1Z You should always use no clean flux before reflowing all of those spots ;)

  • @ryobie1 I don't know shit about the inside of my PS3 so this was interesting to me, but yeah, for the purposes of this video, ur right man

  • @ryobie1 thx for the hint

  • applemonkey187

    thumbs up to you!

ok for ppl out there who dont know what a fan mod is its pretty much a different fan with more blades more blades equal more air push which in turn means cooler system y sony didnt do a more bladed fan in the 1st place is beyond me lol i think they knew this would happen so they can have ppl send it in so they can rip u off lol

  • well fuck i tried to post a helpfull link to a new fan but youtube sucks and wont let me so sorry guys not my fualt i guess ull just have to search for one yourselves .......im becoming a youtube hater sick of this no link posting and this fucking captcha shit and this post button not working all the time getting real fed up with it ...sorry im venting here lol

  • dont get external fans u need an internal fan preferably a 19 blade i think its either 19 or 15 i think PS3s standard fan is a 12 blade try alibaba. Com look for PS3 inner cooling fan that should give u an idea of what ur looking for

  • @pauleloveyoulongtime

THREE TIMES ALREADY!!! why didnt u just have it reballed the second time or even the 1st yea reflow is easier and less costly but reball is longer lasting and since u say u paid for the reflow for a lil more cash u can get it reballed

  • coke*

  • everytime i play borderlands on my ps3 the screen flickers rainbow colors sometimes. is it the game or my ps3, if my ps3, what can i do to fix it? plz respond back! thx so much!

  • @ applemonkey187, how do you do the fan mod to get a permanent fix ? I would realy like 2 know. Thanks :D

  • What model wegner heat gun did you use?

  • hey ppl any advice i had my ps3 reflowd 3 times now and it has borke down agen should i pay to get it fix a gen or just give up as the last time i got it fix it only lasted 3 days

  • fix it ur self.and use artic silver and do a fan mod.

    that should fix it perm.

    ;0)

  • I've done this to HP laptops and it works great and still working even after a year. If you do it right, it will work as long as you keep the fan free of dust so cooling will by optimal. The reason it went bad in the first place is because it was overheating, and on an extensive long term usage without maintainance...it will "blank screen" when turned on. Happens to a lot of laptops, these is common due to interrupted cooling....dust is the main cause.

  • how long dos this last and has it died on you againg after the repaired if so how many times have u fixed it

  • so when do you know that you gotta reflow the ps3? what does your ps3 do specifically?

cuz I'm getting the white snow/green blocks or w/e and everyones been saying its the GPU.

  • lol loser cod only native 600p the game looks like shit even in hd get a real game like killzone 2 ya noob

  • I have Killzone 2. I was in the mood to play COD4.

  • @huflungpu90 Noob, killzone 2 looks like shit even in HD, get a real game like crysis ya noob.

    Fail. You just fail.

  • @huflungpu90 Why does the graphics of a game really matter....

  • can someone tell me if this will work if you get random shit on the screen like the matrix then it freezes ... lol dont wanna put it in the oven till i know

  • if it do that you shi fried

  • nah itll work sir!!! i heated it up with a hair dryer for 15 mins and let it kool down ... now it works for en hour and then gives me a weird screen , am gonna rap the board in tin foil then cutaround the chips so theyre exposed in the oven and re apply new thermal paste .. should work

  • Lol. Please let me know the outcome of this

  • mines used so i dont have warranty and its going crazy the screen kinda goes pixelated and im asking to see if you know what it is and how much does it cost if i send it to sony or to someone you can leave a pm

  • @jaime10pa 150$

  • Thanks. Yea I have MW2. Tonight was my first night playing. (started at about 10pm...it's now 4am lol..) I started off kinda bad but seem to be doing pretty good now. My PSN is The_Z if you want to add me. If it says my list is full just leave a message and ill add you when i get a chance.

  • @The1Z PLEASE ANSWER ME!! is this reflow and themal paste change just a temopary solution? if done right could it last for a lot of time???please answer me...im desperate

  • yes, this is just a temporary fix, but if you have it down by a professional then it will last a lot longer.

  • hey dude thats a temporary fix right? and why did u put that glue on the gpu?

  • Yes it's a temp fix. The "glue" is called thermal paste / thermal compound. It's used to help dissipate the heat from the gpu / cpu to the heat sink.

  • As other's have already stated, this is not an example of reflowed. The substrate takes a lot longer to heat to the desired reflow temp of 217 degrees. The PCB will not take intense heat in concentrated area either and you're liable to warp it. I use a reflow workstation (can't afford IR) along with a good quality no-clean flux and under/pre-heating. The results are a lot more lasting, if not permanent, provided you sort out the design flaws in the case design first.

  • Watch the gillksy video/pdf far better at going through the process of what you need to do for a proper and long lasting reflow most people have copyed his video missing lots out just follow the gillksy method!

  • He does the same thing as I'm doing in the video. I just did not include tear down. The method you see in the video is the say as gillksy, so you will get the same result from whichever you use. Unless of course, he has a newer method. But which ever video you use, neither are the right way to fix it. Also i made this video for an english presentation i had to do. I wasn't expecting to get many views. But it was either this or show how to pull a frame on a frame machine. This was easier :P

  • The right way to do it is the way that is closest to how a professionl electronic repair center would do it i.e infrared gun mb holding frame, gillksys method is very close to this, 350 degrees c is the temp infrared guns are set to with electronic thermo controls, that is why it is better to use a heatgun with variable temp control..

  • I know what the right way is..

A lot of people that view these repair videos can't afford paying $150 to send their PS3 in to get repaired and are looking for a cheap alternative, so I doubt they would spend $125 on a temp controlled heat gun that they would probably never use again, so they would be better off either saving $25 and sending it to sony or getting a pro to do it.

heat is consistent with temp control but is still spread over a wide area.

Both ways work, one is more consistent

  • Well ok then

but do the people who watch this video?

you can score a variable heatgun for around £20-$40 new! not a big investment when you can fix a couple and make your money back is it now :)

    just my 2 pence/cents whatever...

  • I never though of doing a reflow in a caravan, Great idea! Infra Red is the only way to safely reflow unleaded solder. You are not getting a real reflow with a heatgun. The components on the board would fail before reflow temperature is reached for Lead-Free solder. Basic electronics.

  • @SteveSpy1967

Thanks for the advice. I'm not an expert (most of the stuff i know i learned from articles i've read) so I appreciate any info you give. I gave what you said about the components failing into consideration the first time i did this but figured since heat is only applied to them for 15 seconds that it wouldn't do much damage. To have does done by a professional, how much would i expect to pay?

  • this works i've done it lol so ur the idiot and ur the one who don;t know basic electronics

  • It will only last you 1 month if you are lucky... I re-flowed it 2 times, and only last me 1 month each time I use the heat gun re-flow. So I finally got it fix in the oven instead. Last fixed was in June and still running as in September... Look at my videos

  • The time before this actually lasted me 3 months. Instead of only heating each section for 15 seconds i did it for about 45 seconds. I did the same this time around also except after i had spread the compound i put drop in the middle so the heatsinks would spread it once they were tightened. Maybe it'll last me 6 months this time

  • I know this is off subject but is that ur ride in the background ?

  • @krocialblack

Nah, but i do have a car like that in the background. Mine is an 86 300zx. I actually have some videos of my sound system though if you want to check them out.

  • Excellent. Very informative.
