A great take on an interesting piece. I commend you for sticking to it and not giving up halfway through; this must have felt like an eternity putting this together from start to finish. It's funny how some of the uploads in the middle sound more disturbing than the 1000th upload. A brilliant modern response to Lucier!
@MeticulousGuitarist Thanks man! In fact the last upload is the worst sound of all, but I edited it down in this version because it's simply too awful. Check out the final version on my profile page if you want to be terrified.
this shit sounds scary but this is like taking a picture of your self at 30,then making an copy of that picture, and so and, so forth. lol now i understand why cloning is not so popular
Very interesting project...it's funny, because the Lucier version turns into such an ethereal sound and this is like evil robot land. Resonance vs compression. I'm finishing off something in this vein, but it's more on the tv screen/camera lossy side, trying to take Lucier as a starting point and make something abstract from there.
@patanagreg It definitely showcases the differences between analog and digital, right? I suspect your tv/camera project will turn out quite beautiful as well, let me know when you get it up here!
@Coinwalker HAHAHAHAHAHA wow thats the first time ive ever heard some1 use that really old family guy joke on the internet, congratulations you get a gold star
Since you most probably converted to a so called "lossy" format (in the worst case even on a Mac using Quicktime!) this shows the degradation from the flv--> mp4 transcoding (whatever codec you used in those containers...), not necessarily from youtube (who usually do a quite good job at transcoding). You could have saved a lot of bandwidth + time if you did this just locally...
So instead of inserting these pop-up, useless gray bars, and all the other ridiculous and annoying recent tinkernut crap, why doesn't YT just work instead on stuff like improving the quality of videos?
Great video. It's too bad some of the people coming here just simply don't get, or rather can't get, what you are doing. For those who don't understand the whole feel to this, go to Wikipedia and look up "I Am Sitting in a Room".
Canzona is remaking this experiment using modern equipment with the addition of video, and he is using a similar speech made by Alvin Lucier.
will there ever be codecs, both video and audio, that can retain the quality better when doing something like this? I think an encoder would need to detect itself in a source stream for accomplishing that. I doubt anyone would come up with a codec that magically removes only the necessary bits to get to a certain bitrate over and over again without touching what the initial encoding process once left untouched. it's more complicated than just a low-pass filtering or chroma subsampling.
The recordıngs, audıo/vısual, have absolutely nothıng to do wıth the room that canzona ıs sıttıng ın. Thıs ıs a study of dıgıtal reproductıon as an ınternalısed phenomena and the deterıatıon ıs representatıve of the encodıng processes that the fıle ıs repeatedly undergoıng.
The acoustıcs of the room are not affectıng thıs process and thıs ıs not a study that explores the (ın)capacıty of ınput devıces to represent realıty.
Basıcally thıs ıs a crıtıque of a specıfıc encoder. Just an observatıon.
@Heyautonomy You're exactly right, the room itself isn't doing the copying (as the Lucier version does), I'm just using his "Room" metaphor for the mp4/flv codec. I was more exploring the so-called "photocopy" effect, the accumulation of the idiosyncrasies of the medium doing the copying... which is the same for Lucier's piece as well, even if that wasn't quite his point.
@chrisxy123 Correct again, it has been transcoded 2K times, and yes I could have just done it in QT itself without the use of YouTube at all... but what's the fun of that? :)
Yes, yes, MP4 and FLV are actually just different sets of "standards" when encoding video. But the point is that they are *different*.
I used TubeSock (for Mac) to rip my mp4s, with "medium quality" encoding each time. It was the fastest with least number of manipulatable options... I was going for pure speed of use.
@chrisxy123 DID YOU KNOW THAT IF I DOWNLOAD CHEDDAR ENOUGH TIMES IT TURNS INTO GOUDA?! BUT ACTUALLY ITS JUST A CONTAINER OF GOAT. then a moose enters the room and says he doesnt care :(
@canzona@chrisxy123 I understand, I don`t mean to attack your work, ıt ıllustrates a poınt very well. My objectıon ıs to the fact that yours ıs a very blunt poınt wıthout any of the subtletıes that Lucıer`s has and as such I thınk your vıdeo ıs mısleadıng and has as more ın common wıth a delay pedal than ıt does wıth Lucıer`s soundscape work. The use of room "metaphor" only makes sense ın reference2codec as contaıner but we are talkıng about mathematıcal compressıon and not acoustıc varıables.
@Heyautonomy Perhaps, but mine took a lot longer to complete! :) In the end I don't really care how much it was "like" Lucier's piece, I was just curious as to what would happen.
@Heyautonomy You obviously haven't heard about this experiment that was completed several years ago. Canzona is using a close, albeit his, interpretation of what that one dude said several years ago, doing pretty much the same experiment, except maybe without video, and I don't think it was digital. I need to look this up again, as it's been years since I last thought about it.

this would be better if you went through this speech only once but you introduced the next video every few frames or so, like it's slowly degrading throughout the whole thing
@ChibiRaikou I actually tried that but by the time in the video I got to the part where I explained what I was actually doing you already couldn't understand me, and the effect would have been missed. This version is a little longer than I would have liked but I hope that it's still worth the watch. Thanks for the suggestion though!
In case no one has referenced the origin of this idea, it is a cool play upon a classic experimental sound recording by Alvin Lucier, originally recorded in 1969. Way to use the tradition to make something new and interesting. His original was called "I am sitting in a room." What is radical about Lucier's original was that he had a terrible speech impediment and it was extremely difficult for him to record the original statement without stuttering. Well done!
This is Absolutely Brilliant. Thanks for your effort. I saw the video #1000 first btw, and immediately descerned the human form and movement. So I actually agree with PixelEater, even if the experiment at 1000 still proves a very interesting point.
you know, there are some videos, I wish would get this treatment, it would make them far more worth the time wasted watching them, because a bunch of puppet viewers think its worth 33 thousand views, as for yours, well, I think you sir, have WAAAAY too much time on your hands.

@CBR11X Acutally both of us could be right. There is no right theory about ageing. It may be caused by imperfect copying, wear-and-tear, ageing clock (gene start the ageing process) or because of constant reduction of telomere in chromosomes (the thing that allows cells to devide).

"mp4/flv codec"
Neither mp4 nor flv are codecs. They are containers that can contain different
There is no need to upload it to youtube as you could use ffmpeg directly:
Video: h264, yuv420p, 640x480 [PAR 1:1 DAR 4:3], 669 kb/s, 59.75 tbr, 1k tbn, 59.83 tbc, profile : Main@L3.0
Audio: aac, 44100 Hz, stereo, s16, 101 kb/s
Also you have re-encoded it actually 2000 times probably with some sucky encoder from quicktime or something.
