some of you are a bit sad aren't you , this was made 20 years ago before political correctness existed, yes people were racist then , they knew no better , oh and all you smug americans out there dont forget that if it wasnt for a a lot of brave black people in the states blacks in the south still wouldnt have a vote which they only really have has since 1965
Not only by the British. Unfortunaletly many countries -not only the US- wanted them as slaves, but in the US it took longer than in most other countries until they became "free".
The "US" was a British colony when the slaves were brought over. Enslaved by British, transported and sold to other British. Not only African slaves. Irish people were also rounded up and sold in America as slaves. Look up "Philip Welch" (an ancestor) and the ship "Goodfellow".
Yeah, it is really easy for the PUSHER to quit selling, not so easy for the JUNKIE that he got hooked to quit using. Hundreds of thousands of Americans died to change the slave economy set up by Britain..
The comparison to a junkie ist stupid. There where slaves in Britain too, but the stoped much earlier. First the people in -what now is the US, and as you may know though it was a British colony it wasn't only british people there- slaved the Indians (they weren't delievered by the Brits). And there is no excuse -and you can't blame Britain- for the way "black" people were treated in the USA when it wasn't a British colony anymore.

If your point is that Britain ended slavery first, then you are mistaken. Many parts of the American colonies outlawed slavery far before England itself. Second, there were virtually zero slaves in England itself, it was not a slave economy like the British set up in the colonies.
The British started slavery in America. The US ended slavery in America.
Why do British always demand that we admit our past faults while denying every injustice perpetrated by their "Empire"?

Oh yeah, and every citizen in the British colonies were operating under British laws no matter where they actually came from. It was British law that allowed and encouraged slavery in the colonies so that those in the "mother country" could reap tax revenues. Typical British.
The British Gov't ended slavery in 1833? Big deal. Half of the American colonies had done that 80 years earlier, despite ever increasing British greed from the "motherland". WE started the anti-slavery movement.
I didn't know that you are that old that you were part of the US anti-slavery movement. Apparently you don't know much about European history. The whole issue is far too complex to discuss it here in detail (you should read books by non-US historians). Fact is that slavery was common in Europe and America and you can't only blame the Brits for Slavery -and in no way for the way "black" people were/are treated there. But racissm is of course not only a problem in the US.
Ah yes, falling back to the grade school debating tactic "You can't talk about the MOON because you have never been ON the moon". Hilarious.
A quote from a European for you, Southwark Bishop, Thomas Butler, at the Anglican Church's General Synod in 2006 stated "The profits from the slave trade were part of the bedrock of our country's industrial development".
And we can't blame Britain for the way that slaves were treated in British colonies under British law (1620's - 1770's)? Why not?
Oh, shut up! That's not a grade school dabating tactic, it's a fact that the issue is more complex than you seem to believe, but I doubt you've ever been to university. The quote is right. But firstly "black" people were still treated badly -and were slaves in several states- after independence, secondly there weren't only british people in the US who wanted slaves and thirdly just because a law allows something you don't have to do it - would you beat your wife just because your law allows it?
But seriously, many people in my family fought and died to free the slaves from slavery. Some branches of the family were completely wiped out, father and all sons. They died fighting for someone else's freedom.
Could you name ONE British person who ever gave his life so that others could be free? (Not just other Brits) I can name many who died to enslave others, occupy their lands, reap their tax money, but for the selfless act of FREEING oppressed people? None come to mind.
You seem to think that all British people were and are in favor of colonialism and slavery just because they didn't start killing each other. I think it's very sad if you think murder and beeing murdered are the only ways to free people (is that was the USA do in Afghanistan and Irak?).
Stop your hatred against the Brits. There are dark chapters in Britain's history, as in every other country's - even your "glorious" USA!
Not sure about your "did your parents tell you so?" line. Is that how your learn your genealogy over there, lol?
Seriously, don't you all even know your ancestors? The old ladies in my family for generations have kept track of all that, we have lists of thousands of emigrant ancestors, where they landed, what ship they came on and what port they fled from in England.
Oh, the "murders"? How quick you British are to defend the slave owners!
No, I just wanted to know if that is how you learn your genealogy.
I don't defend the slave owners! But I -as a pacifist- think that killings are are a horrid thing and can't be a solution to problems, but that's something several States don't understand, otherwise there wouldn't be such things as death penalty or war (both still popular in the USA).
People weren't only racist back then, there are still too many racist people. But you were right they "didn't know better". In a country like e.g. Austria there where hardly any "blacks" or muslims or whatsoever in the 70's. People didn't have anything to do with them and therefore prejudices were more common and accepted. And often people did say things we would now call racist without "really meaning it".
And in shows like this you have to be careful, racist characters or stereotypes doesn't have to mean it's a racist show or film. It could also be making fun of those narrow minded persons or crtisising what it shows.
Yeah well the Americans are famously the most ignorant race that ever existed, and as you can imagin thats coming up against some prety stiff competition.
Wow, someone corrects your stupid comment and you turn into a lisping queen! How British! Are you wearing a dress, Shirley? You want someone to "beat" you? Hilarious.
Typical responce from an apparently educated American, you forget your ancestors were british, George Washington was too, So what now you going to come to britain and attempt to kill me because i wasnt polite? well boo hoo. i see your comments about us, and hate us, but you are no different, British, Amercans hell everyone in the world has their own opinion, mine remans the same, and to be hoest i couldnt give a damn what you have to say becuse it just reinforces your ignorance.
Seriously, inviting someone to "beat me" or "kill me" is hardly a debating tactic. Now I see why you have never been swept up in the "brain drain", lol.
1. Americans are not a "race".
2. Not all Americans come from Britain.
3. How do you figure that I "hate" the British? I just want them to accept the blame for past wrongdoings. They constantly blame others, but wear "rose coloured glasses" when viewing their own history. 2000 years of warfare, conquest, slavery and occupation.
Well the first bit makes no sence to me, 2 genuine Americans are either of british, french, or spanish ancestory, and 3 where do you get this thought from? only our soppy government find it hard to except what we did, personally i have excepted it but couldnt give a fuck, britain has gone to hell, maybe this is gods punishment to us maybe not.
I've lived in America for twenty years now. I became an American citizen. On of the biggest problems I had withat was that Americans always wanted to tell me their heritage. Irish American, English American, German American etc. I have never to this day, metan American who has said to me "I'm American"
Since you are new here, let me fill you in. When an American (whose family goes back more than 5 generations) tells you "I am Irish American", they are saying that for YOUR benefit. They are just making conversation with a foreigner. They don't say that to each other.
All it means is that they have looked up their last name in a genealogy book, lol. It has no more importance than eye color, hair color or astrological sign. There is no loyalty to a "mother country".

1. Most Americans don't even know what Burma is. We were busy trying to defeat the Japanese, not protect little British colonies for your future occupation.
2. What did the Burmese people say after the war? "Thanks Britain for saving us from the Japanese. Are you going to stay, occupy our land and treat us like second class citizens in our own country, like before the war? Oh yeah, and don't forget the heavy taxation to support the lazy first class citizens of the mother country."
