I moved to Inwood from Kingsbridge in 1977 when I was 15 and moved out in 1994.The neighborhood was still Irish in '77 but started changing a couple of years afterward.
I was born in 1955 in Inwood. Lived as a child on (28) Sickles Street, My grandparents lived at 36 Sickles. My parents moved to NJ in the 1960's. This might sound "old-school", but just know that this is the most beautiful and unique neighborhood in Manhattan...if you live there you are so lucky...if you came from there you carry the beauty with you. Don't worry about who lives there...I'm incredibly grateful that I've grown up with the mix of Irish, Jews and Hispanic residents.
This was our first New York Video Work. Run and Gun shooting and some whacky interviews. One day we'll have to release the out-takes.... there were quite a few
I love how this video was posted on the one snowed out day out of the entire winter. It's like this person waited until the one blizzard we get a year to make a video.
I was born in 1989 and have lived in Inwood all my life. I am of Dominican descent, parents came here in the 80s. I agree with some of the comments about the 'minority' in Inwood and them acting like 'wild animals' but you need to understand that we just have a different way of celebrating. If I'm not mistaken your ancestors also celebrated with loud music, drinking, and obnoxious behavior. Don't blame the young crowd but blame their parents for not teaching their kids how to be civilized.
puerto ricans ruined it in the 70s .VERMIYEA,POST WHAT A DISGRACE. DRIVE THRU THERE ITS ALL PUERTO RICAN AND DOMINICAN FLAGS OUTNUMBER AMERICAN FLAGS.ONLY WHITES ARE ELDERLY HOLD OUTS ON SEAMAN WHO GET MUGGED BY SPANISH.SHAMEFUL.
I don't need to watch anything I say here or anywhere else. What I say is FACT, not fiction. The Irish, Jews & Germans made Inwood a great place, the Dommies destroyed and now the yuppy scum can keep it.
I think we still have freedom of speech in America. Or is that freedom available to those who see things THEIR way?
Real ignorant comment... not surprised. You must have not gone too far in school after '87. Of course you're free to say whatever you want. Bigotry isn't a crime either, so you should be fine.
I was giving your ignorant a** advise.
I'm looking through the 1987 GSS year book at this very moment... this should be fun.
I have several generations of family members who grew up in Inwood. I grew up in the same building my father did when he was a child. He explained to me that Inwood was once a close knit irish community.. I couldn't believe him. When i grew up in the 90's it was all hispanic. Some of my best friends were hispanic. But now, I CAN NOT STAND these yuppies.. They all have there Inwood shirts and sweater!?!? Jesus christ it drives me crazy...
If you live in a Neighborhood where you "CANT STAND" the people..... MOVE! Its that simple. It's not your father's Inwood anymore. I cant comment on your education level, but times and NEIGHBORHOODS change and evolve. That's what happens!!!! With everything! I love Inwood just like your father loved it in his time.
As for the "you'll never own it yuppie" part.... A little too late.
I AGREE COLLEEN,ITS SO BAD NOW THE LIBERAL GOOD SHEPPARD CHURCH DOES CERTAIN MASSES IN SPANISH FOR THE PUERTO RICAN AND DOMINICANS WHO STILL REFUSE TO LEARN ENGLISH,THEY CATER TO THEM.DID THEY DO MASSES FOR THE GERMANS IN GERMAN ?inwood is completely shot.LATTE LIBERALS ON SEAMAN AVE ,WHO CAME FROM OUT WEST TO HAVE A MANHATTAN ADDRESSS,THEY TAKE THE A TRAIN OR AS WE USED TO CALL IT ,THE AFRICAN QUEEN.I GOT MUGGED TWICE ON VERMILYEA BY THOSE PUERTO RICAN ANIMALS,I FINALLY HAD TO MOVE OUT.
I'm another former resident of Inwood and 1987 graduate of GSS. I grew up on Isham off Broadway. My mom grew up on Academy and Sherman, also a grad of GSS, 1955 (she'd kill me for that one!). Parents married in GSS in 1972.
Too bad the area was ruined......and not by the Irish, Jews or Germans who BUILT it!
Its funny how one only sees/remembers what they want to. My mother moved to Inwood in the mid 70s. Back then, it was the IRISH gangs running rampant through the streets of Vermilyea and Post.. Ask your mother!!! Then came the Puerto Ricans, who didn't last too long. Then came those you speak of now... The Dominicans. Its the way of the world.
The neighborhood is great and only getting better!
it seems like you also missed out on Park Terrace Deli it seems like u dont know inwood so check it out THE BEST DELI AND GOURMET GROCERY EVER!!!!!!!!!! peace
I was born and raised in this wonderful neighborhood. My parents moved there in 1936 and I was born in 1941. I grew up in with the woods as my playground. Fished and crabbed in the Harlem River, explored the caves, climbed rocks, remember the Native Americans retuning each year in the summer. Worked for the Yacht Basin Pharmacy, Murray's Market and the Baker Field Cleaners at Indian Road, played curb and stick ball, flipped cards, traded comics and had an extraordinary childhood.
what a great neighborhood until the 1960s than the puerto ricans came, crime started and the irish got out of dodge.what a shame.1980s it was hell.this show is all propaganda,i noticed you didnt show vermilyea ave with the loud dominicans and their loud music.
Well, PANZER299, unfortunately, you're right about a few things.. the 1980s were hell and Dominicans do play loud music..
However, being born and raised in Inwood (Vermilyea Ave and on Broadway/W207 St), attending GSS on Cooper St., growing up with Irish and Dominicans alike, Im glad YOU 'got out of dodge.'
This video did overlook the several new restaurants in the area like, Mamajuanas, Guadalupe's and El Sole.. Wonder why?
Are you sure about that? Because the Garden Cafe is the more recent restaurant featured in this video and i believe it opened after El Sole and Guadalupe. How can you tell when this video was shot?
I lived there for eight years. Just wait until the snow melts. While its coming down and for a few hours after it is beautiful. But when it melts you will be cursing the dog "owners" who don't pick up after their dogs.
I am Cuban i grew up in Inwood in the 70's.I was one of three Spic's as the Mic's called us,in all of inwood. I fought to be accepted,by those Mic's, and guess what? Those Mic's are some of my best friends ever.I love Inwood and would not change my childhood for nothing in the world.
@Maz207 I'm the spawn of those Mic's! My mother grew up there at the same time 60-70s. They lived in a two bed room apartment with 8 people. I used to hate visiting, but now, it's pretty awesome.
where the crap is The Colonel? That rockin' Mo fo is the heart and soul of Inwood! Why, thats why he was made Duke of Inwood!! this video needs updating.
I live in Inwood too, and this is not propaganda in any way. I don't think anyone has said anything bad about Dominicans except you, making reference to ghettos. You are racsist GlossyShoes. You don't like Irish people. Shame on you.
Yo man how can you all tell what color most of the folk in this movie are anyways? people in it that could be from China.
Anyway, Inwood was Native American first, Dutch, then Irish and Jewish, and then for a few decades it has been Dominican. We Dominicans live there but it doesn't belong to no race, and I don't see why this positive vid about our neighborhood has anything to do with Race at all. Get over it and stop acting like bitches.
Thanks. Nice Movie. Some of these comments are just racist (about race). I have been to Inwood in winter, and although you caught it on a special day, I think Inwood is a family neighborhood unlike some of these bitter people commenting.
I notice that we're staying entirely on the west side of broadway here. And north of 204th. And the "family place" comment 'crack'ed me up. Get it? Because inwood was a notorious crack haven during the late 80s/early 90s.
This is just a completely non-representative view of what inwood is like. But thanks for contributing to the gentrification.

Too bad the Dominicans have driven this area to the grown. Drug dealers on every corner, loud music, you name it. Should be all burnt to the ground..
