Hi Penn fans. Penn Says videos have been discontinued, so you won't be seeing any new content on here. You can check out our Profile on our Channel Page for more info. We'll still be checking in, so hope to keep chatting with you all! Thanks!
When minorities appear in prominent positions in media, it helps to shape the national consciousness, shows people a 'what if' & gets their minds accustomed to the idea. This factor probably helped to *some* degree, but surely not on its own. We've had major black candidates before (Keyes, Jackson, etc). This time we also had a hated opposing party thanks to one of the worst presidencies in history, a charismatic Obama, and all the right policies. A 'perfect storm' that made it all possible.
he has a point though. it's not just 24 but Deep Impact. Right of Left, who cannot see Morgan Freeman as President. Not a serious contestant but if you could pick anyone to play a president out of Hollywood's A-list, could you find anyone better than Morgan Freeman?
it's like those tests that showed children let girls play doctors instead of nurses and the girls insisted on being doctors instead of nurses. Times change
it's quite sad that are economy is so bad that children toys go up 3 dollars when they had nothing to do with it, also the president doesn't control every aspect of the government, he elects multiple people to make his job easier, so don't go blaming this president or that one, think about all of the people in the office during his term.
Funny thing: When people were saying Obama had a shot to be the first black president, I actually thought (for a very brief moment) "Wait a minute, wasn't David Palmer the first black president?"
It's very unfair to blame Bush for the state of the economy right now. True, he did make mistakes in handling the war and other areas of the country, but he's only one small part of it. Look at how corrupted the CEO's are on Wallstreet, the ridiculous price gouging of oil companies, and many other various areas contributing .
Tell me leo what did bush do to you. yea i did'nt like him in his 2nd term well because nothing happened dems took office rep in the white house its like Childern they always fighting nothing gets sovled unless something tragic happens and there awaken but then will eventully be tucked back into bed to go to the dream world idk if that makes sense but Both Partys are equally screwed up.
I think it has more to do with the fact that the country is so fed up with the way the bush, and thus the republicans, have handled things that there was NO WAY a republican was going to get in, especially one that was going to support everything Bush did. We have Bush to thank for Obama's presidency. That's it.
Are you blaming Obama, who has been in office for not quite 2 months now, for the poor state of the economy? How stupid are you, or have you just been in a coma for the past 8 or 9 years?
Let's see....economy was doing well up until 2007, then it started to drop....2006 the dems took over legislature......hmmmm, no, not just Obama, the democrats overall. Also, the whole Fannie Mae debacle started during the Clinton administration and when Bush came into office we were in a recession based upon the work of the Clinton Administration. So, no, not just Obama...the whole democratic party!
Ok, so the highest the DOW ever got before Clinton took office was 3,000 points (it was almost less than 2000 points when he came into office). Clinton then took the DOW to 12,000 points before the internet bubble popped and Bush got the DOW at 10,000 points.
We are only surviving now because of the success that the Clinton administration had.
But what I really want to say is - the Republicans had the House and the Senate for 12 years during the Clinton and Bush administrations - so saying it was Clinton's fault would also imply that it was the House and Senates fault as well - right?
Also - is it really a good argument to say it was Clinton's fault? This would mean that Bush failed to do anything about it FOR 8 FUCKING YEARS!
So you're basically arguing that Bush isn't ignorant - just incompetent.
no ppl just dont like the way obamas trying to fix it i mean nationalizing the banks and nationalizing transportation yea lets just go to socialism thats the anwser or lets just poor billions of dollars into it so that when inflation comes back to bite us in the ass are toilet paper will b worth more money
I would like to withdraw my Penn's an asshole statement. It turns out that his views on TV are not the same as his views on YouTube. So, the "asshole" comment, I would like to withdraw, but not the "sellout" comment.
Yeah I guess it really doesn't have to do with a mandate from the people of this country that they really want things to go in a different direction...it's a TV show... (not that I personally think Obama will be the one to bring that change...only the people can, as history has shown).
I've been telling people that television shows reflect reality better than the news. They put the truth in front of us in such ways ways that we assosiate these stories with television and fiction and think to ourselves, "this can only happen on TV, not in real life!" Meanwhile Shows like 24 and Prison Break and movies like "The International" are the elite letting their plans be known to us and laughing at us because we still don't see it in reality. And Penn's an asshole, too! Sellout!
First of all there is comparison. Did I say "Prison Break reflects reality?" No, I said Prison Break reflects reality more than televeision news. If you think that's retarded, then you need to work on your observational skills. See, I see patterns and corelations and similarities that few see because of my abnormally high IQ, so it's ok for you to miss the things I catch, don't feel bad. Besides, there is NOTHING I can do to make you understand, you're just not the understanding type.
all television sucks now. The good guy beats the mwahaha-ing badguy on top of the spire, during a thunderstorm, with the bomb ticking down to zero, without a single challenging thought or feeling througout the production and it's brought to you by Coca-Cola. When an intelligent protaganist, defuses a complex problem and beats the deep and believable villian back to a stalemate in a morally gray realistic world, let me know.
Jack Bauer is a hero. I thank him for everything. Terrorism has been down since season 5 and Osama is probably still in hiding now that season 7 is underway, lol
And before you reply calling me an "idiot", this is a joke and a reference to those "Jack Facts" that were popular 2 years ago
Didn't you say you were sick of race? Now you're saying it's because of race? Huh? Maybe if you didn't randomly choose your opinions, I could respect them.
I can believe why someone would suggest that "24" would have more influence on the US public than MLK & the Civil Rights Movement.
After all, tens of millions of Americans watch "24" & believe what they hear on tv, whereas Martin Luther King's influence amounts to little more than some speech about a dream he had.
If the actor who played the president in "24" had run, he would've stood a very good chance of winning. Martin Sheen, however, would've won.
i don't understand how you can support skepticism, sexual freedom, (attack abstainance) and freedom of speech with one hand, and pat george w. bush and john mccain on the back with the other.
oh, absolutely, koibast. it's perfectly logical for all mankind's oppositional nature that every measure of hope is met with an equal measure of cynicism, no matter where a leader hails from.
even moreso when we've dedicated 8 years to a war between the parties, which took priority even over dealing with the post-9/11 world. i would be cynical too, but i'm a silly, uninformed romantic like the overwhelming majority of the country was during the election.
I wouldn't go that far - I like a lot of movies and books about crime, war, politics, etc. I remember reading that 24 producer Joel Surnow is chummy with other members of the Fear Party, and was responsible for the epic fail "1/2 Hour News Hour" on Fox.
There's muslim terrorists, American terrorists, Jewish terrorists, etc. Anyone can be a terrorist! But no...whenever the word "terrorist" comes up everyone thinks it's the "towelheads".
The man who writes "24" is a self proclaimed neo conservative.
"24" is hardly the work of a left leaning person with it's "my country right or wrong" message and uber patriotic characters willing to kill themselves in order to "save" their country. More like the work of a paranoid, jingoistic, violent psychopath...hence the "republican propaganda" tag. Actually "neo con propaganda" is more accurate. Not that the Democrats are any less intent on starting world war 3.
Is it really that hard for you to accept a black man being successful that you have to try to find a reason for it, other than the obvious fact that he's the better candidate? Wow!
I'd argue that 24 has done much more to validate the decisions made by the Bush administration, particularly the show's liberal use of torture to solve every problem Jack Bauer is faced with, than to help Obama's campaign. If this theory was true wouldn't Bush's approval rating be much higher than it is?
At first I thought this was silly, but I looked up 24 on Wikipedia and the show apparently averaged about 11.6 million viewers over its six seasons. That's nearly 4% of the US, right?
Ironically I was saying this exact same thing during the first season of 24 which was ironically not long after Obama made his first major public appearence. Of course the same thing could be said for Commander In Chief which painfully force the idea of a woman president down America's throat right before it became public knowledge that Hilary was thinking about running for President. Since we all know the majority of hollywood is far left wing, it's not a theory that goes without validation.
No way. It may be popular from the point of view of people who are either in or obsessed with the the poular media but realistically it has not reached enough people to completely alter the political or social landscape. Talk about getting caught up in your own illusions.
The flaw with this argument is that President Palmer's speech writers credited Martin Luther King and LBJ, etc. with making Palmer's presidency possible. Nice try.
haha penn's got a point here. 24 did portray one of the most "ideal" presidency's a tv-absorbed society can hope for. And we all fell in love with that dream.
I can go with that theory. Honestly, even though I'm an Atheist, if there is a God out there it's Morgan Freeman for me. He was the best God I've ever seen portrayed in cinema.
Interesting theory, now I need to start watching 24 to see if I agree, but I wonder what do you think of Ron Paul. Regardless it's to late to have him become president of course, just wondered your opinion.
got to be the most accurate summary of the election I've seen so far. You are unfortunately absolutely 100% correct. Too bad too few people are speaking this truth.
re comment by cndisue: which lunatics where they live are you speaking of--there are at least 20 million of them in california, and that's not counting the ones who left for las vegas last weekend.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Penn is high. I heard 24 is a good show. For a show done by neoconservatives. The few neoconservatives capable of writing and directing a good TV show or movie.
They put a black president on 24 to try and fool people into thinking that neoconservatives aren't racist. Or sexist. Or gay bashers. But they are. Which is why the Republican party is almost 100% percent all white, male and Christian. Just as long as Jesus is white and has blonde hair, blue eyes and doesn't look Semitic.
the cast and crew of 24 are conservative liberals. theres a woman president. she gets kidnapped. whitehouse bombed. i think the black ghostbuster is a warlord. jon voight is a bad guy. tony almeida is back but evil.
Is this part of Penn's comedy act or something? I hope it isn't because it isn't funny. And if it's an attempt at serious commentary, then perhaps he should just give up any future attempts because it made him sound... well, childish.
they have many times! It's the libertarian party, but not many people hear about it because libertarians don't own there very own 24 hour media propaganda machines like the dems and repubs.
hello...my name is Winston and I work at the ministry of truth...I'm very troubled knowing that for years I have been deleting so much information from Oceana...you don't understand why we bomb other countries stockpiled surplus goods...I've often wondered if could trust that pretty lady who always shows up at the water cooler around 10:15 everyday...she sure is pretty, but I don't know if I could trust her trusting my own best intention to get to know her and "get a date."
Obama didn't have the political strength to win. If McCain would have rallied his supposed base (conservatives) instead of alienating them, he would have easily won.
And is decisions of alienating supporters would of ran into the presidency. Your argument is pointless and doesnt save anyone face, including yourself. So stop trying to convince yourself against failure. Stupid decisions are still stupid decisions no matter what light you put them under.
You dont even understand what your own "expression" means. I find that hilarious. The past of a person means shit if there is a lack of consistency. There is no point in defining potential if the potential isnt there when it matters. Your desperation for an excuse is what makes you ignorant of both the situation and what you are actually saying. Please stop posting. I didnt bother voting for either of them, btw.
When did I EVER say anything about whether or not McCain would have been a good president? (certainly better than Obama, but probably still not good)
My comment related entirely to the performance of the two candidates during the ELECTION. My entire point is that McCain SHOULD have been the landslide winner but he fucked it up. Just like the NY Yankees should easily beat a Jr. High baseball team. Nothing the Jr. High team can do will win them the game. It requires the Yankees to screw it up.
I know what your saying, I thought you would of caught on by now. Anyway, your argument is pointless and thats all I was getting at. I tried to kindly explain that but you are bent on the blanket "you are all idiots" response and wont humor me with your anger properly. Hence me getting bored. In short, your hung up on the wrong stuff, over-analyzing in the wrong areas, and creating a pointless arguement that doesnt do anything or go anywhere (these comments as an example). Get it? done now.
i thought about this recently, but then i was thinking about the complete lack of outrage from hillybilly fuckclump america when morgan freeman was prez in some blockbuster movie.
Maybe.... I'd like to think people aren't so stupid as to be swayed not to be racist only because of a television show, but maybe thats putting too much faith in my fellow Americans.
OVER 5000 American soldiers HAVE BEEN KILLED. OVER 50,000 American Soldiers HAVE BEEN MUTILATED, CRIPPLED OR PARALYZED for the rest of their lives. Think of Them and Their Families.
That's why you SHOULD NOT vote for McCain.
PLEASE...VOTE OBAMA FOR PRESIDENT...TO SAVE AMERICAN LIVES FROM UNNECESSARY HORIFFIC DEATHS...!!!
The horrific deaths of Americans will happen here in our homeland if we don't battle these lunatics where they live. Thank God for our military men and women doing their job so we can have peace at home.
But where is the military people...? Yes they are wasted in Iraq. Listen, nobody is againt necessary wars, what we are against is fighting stupid wars, just because Sadam insulted WB father, or for Oil???

I guess every cop/detective/vigilante/military drama/book/comic is republican propaganda then...
I guess I'm just gonna have to watch the show myself...I've only ever watched the first episode.
destroyreligion 3 years ago
I wouldn't go that far - I like a lot of movies and books about crime, war, politics, etc. I remember reading that 24 producer Joel Surnow is chummy with other members of the Fear Party, and was responsible for the epic fail "1/2 Hour News Hour" on Fox.
cryptsub 3 years ago
There's muslim terrorists, American terrorists, Jewish terrorists, etc. Anyone can be a terrorist! But no...whenever the word "terrorist" comes up everyone thinks it's the "towelheads".
Marakulous43 3 years ago
Oh, well thanks for sticking up for the "towelheads". Where the fuck are you coming from, anyhow?
cryptsub 3 years ago
None of your business!
Marakulous43 3 years ago

Wow!

so true, I'd much rather have President Palmer. Literally, I would rather have a fictional character as a president over obama.

I'd argue that 24 has done much more to validate the decisions made by the Bush administration, particularly the show's liberal use of torture to solve every problem Jack Bauer is faced with, than to help Obama's campaign. If this theory was true wouldn't Bush's approval rating be much higher than it is?
demonscrowley 3 years ago
At first I thought this was silly, but I looked up 24 on Wikipedia and the show apparently averaged about 11.6 million viewers over its six seasons. That's nearly 4% of the US, right?
lnd3005 3 years ago
Ironically I was saying this exact same thing during the first season of 24 which was ironically not long after Obama made his first major public appearence. Of course the same thing could be said for Commander In Chief which painfully force the idea of a woman president down America's throat right before it became public knowledge that Hilary was thinking about running for President. Since we all know the majority of hollywood is far left wing, it's not a theory that goes without validation.
job1181 3 years ago
No way. It may be popular from the point of view of people who are either in or obsessed with the the poular media but realistically it has not reached enough people to completely alter the political or social landscape. Talk about getting caught up in your own illusions.

I have never watched 24, but I think Jones has a extremely valid point.
AnnRKey 3 years ago
The flaw with this argument is that President Palmer's speech writers credited Martin Luther King and LBJ, etc. with making Palmer's presidency possible. Nice try.
bluefr0nt 3 years ago
haha penn's got a point here.

Satchel334 3 years ago
the cast and crew of 24 are conservative liberals. theres a woman president. she gets kidnapped. whitehouse bombed. i think the black ghostbuster is a warlord. jon voight is a bad guy. tony almeida is back but evil.

You're right, all 60 million people who voted for Bush in 2004 are racist and sexists and homophobes. You're completely right...

Is this part of Penn's comedy act or something? I hope it isn't because it isn't funny. And if it's an attempt at serious commentary, then perhaps he should just give up any future attempts because it made him sound... well, childish.

Nah, I was right. Obama didn't win, McCain lost.
There is a difference. If McCain wouldn't have tried so hard to be a moderate he would have won easily. McCain beat himself.

Right Obama didn't win, McCain Lost..
Obama lost as well and we have noone as president for four years. How could I have missed that.

And Another Thing So If Obama Didnt Win We Dont Have A President? Wow Nice Try At Sounding Smart.
MrCssPwnage 2 years ago
Good job displaying your idiocy.
Obama didn't have the political strength to win. If McCain would have rallied his supposed base (conservatives) instead of alienating them, he would have easily won.
Obama did not win that election. McCain lost it.
KurNorock 2 years ago
And is decisions of alienating supporters would of ran into the presidency. Your argument is pointless and doesnt save anyone face, including yourself. So stop trying to convince yourself against failure. Stupid decisions are still stupid decisions no matter what light you put them under.
ShoesFlewOff 2 years ago
wow are you dense.
That is what I've been saying this whole time. McCains stupid desicions are what lost him the presidency. Nothing Obama did won it for him.
It is such a simple expression, yet none of you retards can seem to grasp the concept. No wonder you voted for such a moron.
KurNorock 2 years ago
You dont even understand what your own "expression" means. I find that hilarious. The past of a person means shit if there is a lack of consistency. There is no point in defining potential if the potential isnt there when it matters. Your desperation for an excuse is what makes you ignorant of both the situation and what you are actually saying. Please stop posting. I didnt bother voting for either of them, btw.
ShoesFlewOff 2 years ago
When did I EVER say anything about whether or not McCain would have been a good president? (certainly better than Obama, but probably still not good)
My comment related entirely to the performance of the two candidates during the ELECTION. My entire point is that McCain SHOULD have been the landslide winner but he fucked it up. Just like the NY Yankees should easily beat a Jr. High baseball team. Nothing the Jr. High team can do will win them the game. It requires the Yankees to screw it up.
KurNorock 2 years ago
Do you get it now? Or are you really so incredibly stupid that even this simple explanation is beyond your comprehension?
Either way, I am tired of explaining it to you.
I swear it is like trying to get a dog to understand algebra...
KurNorock 2 years ago
I know what your saying, I thought you would of caught on by now. Anyway, your argument is pointless and thats all I was getting at. I tried to kindly explain that but you are bent on the blanket "you are all idiots" response and wont humor me with your anger properly. Hence me getting bored. In short, your hung up on the wrong stuff, over-analyzing in the wrong areas, and creating a pointless arguement that doesnt do anything or go anywhere (these comments as an example). Get it? done now.
