I have this. Got it for my birthday in 1985. Ironically I knew the year I got it, but seeing that copyright 1985 at the bottom of the screen only backs up my tried and true memory.
Still have mine I got for Xmas of '84!! My nephews play with it now whenever they come to visit. And they've figured out what I did all those years ago - putting it together was a total pain in the ass!
Finally got one off of ebay about a month ago and love him. That boy is big though I'll tell you that much. I thought he sucked ass back in the day like everyone else, but he's actually pretty cool.
So all the parts made sense individually, you had a jet, a helicopter, SUV, Submarine, etc then there is the three parts that made up the torso...what the hell were those supposed to be?
@whoopdiddydo Me too, but I was happy with just 5 lions as opposed to like 30 vehicles. lol Plus the lions were big so they were easier to keep up with.
@Doomsday971 That's true about the lions. How many kids must have lost one of those 30 pieces and it was never the same toy again? Also, Vehicle votron looks like he is wearing skates, which isn't the most manly thing for him.
I actually had the whole thing. Kicked the butt of Lion Voltron in my opinion. What I did never like were the faces of the three kids, they look weird with that stoned expression. Brrr....
@andoc Finally someone who agrees with me. Anyone I talk to about Voltron its always "Lions so great!" To me the Vehicle Teams were more realistic. Although I read if you're a Vehicle Team fan you're more a Star Trek fan, if you're Lion Team you're more a Star Wars fan.
@Cavillier1970 Well, I don't know about that, I actually like Star Wars much, much more than Star Trek. But yeah, Vehicle Voltron had a better story than Lions, better team and better weapons, too.
@Optimus313 I agree, and the one episode where they had both voltrons fighting the Drools was awesome. Too bad the vehicle team & the third team didnt get the push in the US like they did in Japan.
@Cavillier1970 Yeah I remember that movie when I saw the pic I was like I would really like to see that but then I saw it the movie is called "Voltron defender of the universe the fleet of doom" if you wanted to know so you could check it out.
I actually had this thing. It came in about a godzillion pieces; I was lucky enough to find them at a discount store (similar to Big Lots or somesuch, but not as big) for $7/team.
oh my god someone told me about that we were watch ing the robot chicken epi about that and he said that thing was a pain in the ass both finding all the picese and putting them together
I wish Toynami would make an actual 20th anniversary Vehicle Voltron like they've done with the lions a few time's already. We all know the vehicle cartoon sucked ass big time but the Vehicle Voltron itself was still a nice piece of art work.
@Janayla94 i don't agree on the cartoon, it wasn't my favorite but I liked it anyway, but a big hell yeah from me on a re-release of Dairugger/Vehicle Voltron. Got to be in die cast like the lions, though, "it's a lost art". :)
@kranktank If the fan's can just get Toynami to release an actual transforming Vehicle Voltron and not that plastic vinyl non-transforming Vehicle Voltron that's being sold through Entertainment Earth toy store then that would be great!
@Janayla94 oh definitely it has to be transforming/combining and articulated. I wouldn't buy an immobile hunk of metal that was shaped to look like a car, I'd want to buy a real working car, just like I wouldn't buy that vinyl piece of junk you mentioned.
Man, these old commercials are so funny to me now. Back then, the idea of having those huge combiner robots; Transformers/Voltron, in our small child hands was so coveted! lol They were so physically huge and heavy in our hands. And now we're all adults and these same toys are what we continue to covet! Haha.
They gave us Albegas (intended as Voltron II) but we never got Daltanius (Voltron III). Dairugger (Vehicle Voltron) ended up being Voltron II and they sold Albegas as Voltron III even though they never ended up using the show. Daltanius was really cool though. My friend had it (Godaikin Japanese import) cause his parents were rich.
wow you guys sound like a broken record. I wish i knew the difference between these toys. all iknew that when i was a kid in the early 80's i wanted this toy too. must be nice to be a spoiled kid in thise era pretending to be an 80's kid.
Bombshell's mouth vent design look like Mazinger Zees'. Omega Supreme has them hoses that connect around his lower face and mouth like the Zeon Zaku mobile suit does. So yes I see the resemblances.
You know, as a kid I loved Vehicle Voltron but looknig at it these days, a lot of those vehicles were pretty lame. I mean many of them just look like nothing more than robot body parts. Take the Land Team for example, other than the two cars, what the hell are those other things supposed to be?
Well yeah...VV was best when he was put together. At least the separate lions in Lion Voltron had play value. What would you do with one of the feet cars that you can't do with a toy car? And yes, a lot of the vehicle modes were pretty ambiguous. I still like VV a lot though.
If Vehicle Voltron were revamped, it would probably look like Voltes V. For the record....I wasn't fond of Vehicle Voltron aka Dairugger XIX that much since the robot ripped off Voltes V.
And Voltes V is ripoff of Getter Robo. Don't you think Power Rangers is a ripoff too? It is so hard to be original. Optimus Prime's head looks like Gundam's. Omega Supreme's head looks like a Zeon Zaku. Bombshell's head looks like Mazinger Z'.
Bullshit....Voltes V was a spinoff of Combattler V(same creator), Lion Voltron aka Golion was spunoff from Zyurangers (both made from Toei Co.), Omega Supreme doesn't even come close to a Zaku so that's Bullshit. Bombshell's head looking like Mazinger Z is also Bullshit....They only share the same grill mouths and that's a minor similarity. I agree that Prime's head is similar to a Gundam, but not a total ripoff. It's so hard to be original?...now that's lazy-minded BULLSHIT.
I still dissagree with you. It's you that is contradicting me. Everyone has an opinion. Speak your mind if you wish. May you someday drop the baloney baggage yourself.
Hey look buddy, It's not my intent to bruise your pride. I've made a logical analysis, and you have to get all mad about that. I think it's crap and BS that you condemn me as ignorant without asking me WHY I disagree. You're a Christian and you ought to know better than that. I'm not trying to be a KIA-Boy, I'm just being to be honest here. I feel sad for you acting like this.
You are no different than I am. But atleast I'm letting you speak your mind. You told me to shut up and I didn't treat you that way. I'm trying to have some tolerance. I think you should work on that too.
First of all.....buddy, I didn't tell you to shut up.
Second of all....I'm letting you speak your mind as well.
Third of all....I'm expressing a logical opinion, I'm in no ways expressing my perfection or dominance to you. I've made that very clear to you buddy.
Just b/c I said "quit bullshiting around" doesn't technically mean "shut up", and unfortunately you're continuing this slandering crap and that's indeed bullshit.
KICK ASS! Sweet, it brings back memories. I still have mine too...I collect Godaikin, Transformers, chogokin, Bandai robots, die cast metal Japanese toys, etc. and I loooove seeing the old commercials for all my toys. Keep posting them!
The Masterpiece Voltron is pretty cool, but I still like the old version better...the new one looks too "skinny" in some ways. Of course it's waaaaay more articulated, you can pose it just about any way you want to, whereas the old one was hardly posable even tho it had quite a lot of joints. I'm still waiting for the Soul of Chogokin version of Lionbot to come out!
The worst day of my life was around Halloween when dad (unknowingly) backed up the van and crushed our vehicle Voltron. My lil bro and I cried for days (lol)....got it back that christmas!!! Great memories...thanks 4 sharing
@RafaelPhoenix07 It IS. I have one minus a few bits and pieces and to transform it either way without the epic cuts, takes quite a while. I love it all the same, though.
Cool. I'm surprised I didn't see the king sized toy before. I've seen the king sized toy of Lion-Voltron but not Vehicle-Voltron. That is until I saw this commercial.
i remember having the massive voltron that was controlled by battieres it was like 3 feet tall. and the blazing sword withthe pull string...then my dogs found them >.>
Why was it that, America insisted on calling any and every super robot from 80s Japan Voltron?! There's only one Voltron(the lions) This robot is Dai-raga it had a completely different plot, stroyline and universe even.
just like robotech...if it was all threaded together it was more marketable...and considering this was over 20 years ago before the purist otaku came out...we were pretty happy...thankfully I can buy a Voltron or Robotech box set and you can buy a Macross or Go Lio and we can both be happy
This set wasnt made of die cast metal though. You may have it confused with the lion set. This vehicle set was made entired of plastic and real rubber tires. They had one made of metal which was much smaller and not mainstreamed to the american market though.
The Japan product was also plastic. Theres a web page that explains the history of how the toy company originally wanted to make this toy out of di-cast, however was too expensive to produce. So, instead, gave them plastic housings.
I have this. Got it for my birthday in 1985. Ironically I knew the year I got it, but seeing that copyright 1985 at the bottom of the screen only backs up my tried and true memory.

just like robotech...if it was all threaded together it was more marketable...and considering this was over 20 years ago before the purist otaku came out...we were pretty happy...thankfully I can buy a Voltron or Robotech box set and you can buy a Macross or Go Lio and we can both be happy
