Actually about the car keys thing. It was explained in some documentary I saw not that long ago. Basically in stressful situations the brain will make a "third person" appear, usually someone we know, dead or alive. Sometimes it's also jesus for some people. It helps them calm down and focus their attention.
The region can be stimulated in a lab and make people have the same vision/feeling. Just more evidence that jesus helping people is bullshit.
This man knows religion, he knows that the more stupid he sounds the better are the chances that some day someone will find a religious explanation for the nonsense.
@gulbirk The bible itself is the evidence that there is no god, my friend. If you read it, you will be able to tell. Its completely full of holes and assbackwardsy stuff. Ex. 1) the earth is flat and 6000 yrs old. Why would an all knowing God tell us such a lie? Or did he forget? Or did his creator drop him on his head? Or... he doesn't exist. Viola
@LOGIC42369 Ok but thats one god. Are you going to say that NO gods can exist based on the fact that a god they started believing in thousands of years ago is kinda wrong?
@gulbirk Of course theres no Gods, why would there be? Religioin is regaurded by common people as true, by the wise as false, and by the leaders as useful. The one they made up thousands of years ago is wrong because it was rolled over 25 other wrong religions. Theres no point in believing, either, just watch all the middle easterns pray all day to Allah, as nothing ever happens for them. Think about all the war their beliefs have caused. Not gonna say anything hateful, but think about it.
@gulbirk because it makes perfect sense to any rationally thinking person, unless you give 'exceptions' in how physics and probability works. there are hundreds of conflicting religions, for JUST one example. if any god had ever actually done ANYTHING 'godly' to prove himself to ANYONE, that was unexplainable, then there would be one religion that everyone would follow, instead of everyone making up their own religion. Every religion has a point where it needs a loophole to make it work.
@gulbirk besides, lets say there was a god. if there was, he left us, because there is no evidence to prove him except hearsay and threatening books devised to be unarguable because the book says so. practically every religious person ignores many of the rules they need to follow to be gauranteed and afterlife, which is another hole in the cup. Any 'answered prayer' is a complete cooincidene, and people pray for trivial things so that they get answered. still not satisfied? then message me
@gulbirk Well that would be your only case in point, my friend, a god that has abandoned ship. And thats when were back on ground zero. Really thats the only thiestic view (i think) that can't really be argued, until we figure out how the universe began. thought: we know (with practically no valid argument against it) that the earth formed itself via matter collecting in space from, esentially expansion of material. maybe god made the big bang but not the earth in particular? just a thought
@LOGIC42369 Yes, see I dont believe that until evidence is presented for it of course. My point was that I dont think we are justifided to rule it out as a possibility.
@gulbirk hmm.. perhaps not. the only thing is, i think there are better possibilities. the idea that something created us for a personal reason just never made sense to me. i just don't see what the point was. id say if theres anything to worship, it would be the earth and universe itself, because those things allow us to live. i'm just happy to be alive with the oppurtunity to have a brain to realize the incredible chance we have!
@LOGIC42369 Yes, but now you are restricting yourself to a theistic god again. Im not talking about that. Im simply saying that I dont think there is any justification to rule out a supernatural explanation. Of course, im not saying we should accept it, im simply saying we shouldnt rule it out.
@gulbirk Sorry to reply to your comment from a while ago. I don't think many Atheists "rule out" a god in the sense that they believe there is evidence to show a god CANNOT exist, however I do believe there is evidence that a deity as a creator or a prime mover is, at the very least, just as problematic as having no creator, if not MORE problematic.
Actually it's impossible to tell the title is a joke. If you believe the Universe is 6,000 years old, then a letter like that would be an overachievement.
Face it folks. A lot of 'Christians' are either morons or not very intellectual. It is not a prerequisite of course, but it helps to be a little ignernt.
I don't think this bald dude understand the big bang theory. Don't fool yourself big bang theory is just a theory like many others that cannot be proved. Take for what it is: speculation.
@Volovox The "big Bang" is the best explanation we have given the evidence & facts that we have discovered, including observable facts, mathematical calculations, & other evidence like the microwave background radiation (left over from the "Big Bang")! If new facts point into us in a new direction then scientists will include the new info OR postulate a new theory! The "Big Bang" is not just a guess, it's backed by real, substantial science, facts and evidence - something religion doesn't have!
@AmericanGayAtheist devil's advocate: the big bang is the single best peice of evidence for a creator(prime mover). it is a very good argument for deism. i don't know why atheists point to the big bang like it supports atheism, it doesn't. it supports the existence of a prime mover.
@mebe84 Actually, my understanding of the big bang & what happened before and afterwards is under the realm of Quantum Mechanics which is a strange place indeed. I have heard scientists like Stephen Hawkins (& others) speak about the big bang, stating that the event could have happened (using quantum theory) without any force initiating the event (big bang)! I will freely admit I can't explain it but I remember it being clearly stated that a deity was necessary to start this universe!
@AmericanGayAtheist correct about hawking.at this point however it is little more than pure speculation.so i would still say that the big bang supports deism more than not.but hawkings m theory and lawrence krauss' work on cosmology both represent the first rational counter to that interpretation.we'll have to wait and see how their theories pan out at this point.if u look at the original controversy in science between steady-state vs expanding universe before the bang theory u'll see my point
Al-Quran has 1400 years ago and Muslim Scientists has been declared "He (God) makes you (human), in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness".
Al Quran sura Az Zumar;6

Have the Bible and scientists states "He (God ) makes you (human), in the wombs of your mothers, in stages, one after another, in three veils of darkness"?
I don't believe that I exist, seriously I don't. All the evidence points towards the higher probability of my existence so I'm going with the evidence. If greater evidence emerges to say that I don't exist then I will have to re-evaluate and ponder the very idea of existence itself. However .... I don't see that happening
The difference between the murder instructions in the bible and the qur'an is that muslims actually take those instructions seriously, and do in fact murder people on a regular basis, whereas christians gave that practice up hundreds of years ago, by and large.
Actually there are plenty of people calling themselves Christian killing people today. The Murderer of Dr. Tiller in Kansas is one example, and the violent rhetoric of late coming from right-wing Christian circles is evidence the motive is still there to kill. Further, there are twice as many Xians than Muslims, and if Muslims "murder people on a regular basis", why are most Muslims not doing so?
@SurelyYewJest I guess you missed the qualifier "by and large". In light of that, all of your questions and examples are unnecessary. I never said most muslims are murdering people, so I don't see why that question was asked. I just said it happens on a regular basis, which it does.
Instant proof the guy who worte this is not the scientist he claims to be. He ends his letter by saying there is not enough evidence to prove there is no God, if he were an actual scientist he would know this is a logical fallacy. You cannot 'prove' non existance, since in order to have evidence for or against a thing that thing must first exist.
Its amusing. He thinks Atheism is belief in self. He needs to define some things. haha! And I personally have an understanding of Satanism. The proper one. Not the sacrifice animals crap. It is indeed the belief in yourself and accepting your roots as a primal animal. They are like immoral atheists!

ROFL this is the funniest comment I've recieved all day. Nothing in biology makes sense without evolution and ben steins movie is full of errors, he doesn't even know what evolution is, he thinks that it has some thing to do with the big bang and gravity lol.
@Sadochrist The funny thing about Ben Stein is that his grasp of any science that has nothing to do with his crazy religious beliefs is pretty much dead on, so it seems he is not so much indoctrinated as just plain lying.
"Just because secular society has dragged the religion that you prefer - kicking and screaming - towards sanity and morality, doesn't mean that you get to pretend that your religion is without its problems and point your fingers at some other ones"
I've wanted to say that for SOOOOO LONG. It was delicious to hear. Rock on.
I doubt that's Gish. I've met Gish. He's quite an eloquent speaker. I'd expect him to be a much better writer. He may be a nut, but Gish does have a genuine Ph.D. He does have an education. Also, Dillahunty said that the writer had a name that would suggest English as his native language. The name Duane Gish always sounded a bit foreign to me (even though he's not).
I'll say it again. No way this is Gish. Gish does have a real PhD in science. He's a published author on Tobacco Mosaic Virus. Not prestigious, but a scientist.
I think the guys are being pranked, or someone is pretending to be Gish to add credentials to their views.
Sorry, a Scientist who has done a pear-review article on the tobacco mosaic virus whould have it in PubMed. I searched PubMed for Duane Gish and the only thing that came was an article in Science called: Educators Have Hard Choices; Nationally, Not Just in Kansas. Which is NOT a peer-review article, but an oppinion. I fail to see how much of a scientist is Duane Gish.
It's not that I'm a fan of the guy. I queried PubMed too, and cross-refed his Wiki bio. He has three pubs from his days at the Viro lab at UCBerkeley. Look for Gish D, articles in 1950s.
To repeat, not prestigious, but a scientist at a good institution, once upon a time. What happened since then, I won't speculate.
Maybe, but if your premise is true, why not pick someone more notable like Behe? The possession of a PhD != skill with language. We live in an age with spell/grammar check, and the average joe doesn't need to be exceptionally literate. I've gotten plenty of emails from educated individuals that read like the unintelligible tripe from a second grade classroom. No evidence this is Gish no, but your reasoning why is flawed.
Are you sure it's from Gish? I know that Duane Gish is a complete nitwit, but I would have expected him to be a little bit more conscientious about proofreading his letter before sending it.
i wrote that letter and want to say how sorry i am for thinking like that.one event happened that changed my thinking forever.i was hit in the knee with an astroid.

OK thanks

Maybe, but if your premise is true, why not pick someone more notable like Behe? The possession of a PhD != skill with language. We live in an age with spell/grammar check, and the average joe doesn't need to be exceptionally literate. I've gotten plenty of emails from educated individuals that read like the unintelligible tripe from a second grade classroom. No evidence this is Gish no, but your reasoning why is flawed.

Are you sure it's from Gish? I know that Duane Gish is a complete nitwit, but I would have expected him to be a little bit more conscientious about proofreading his letter before sending it.

see that wink over in the video details, it means I'm making a joke, I didn't think I'd have to spell it out to people, guess I was wrong.

It was pretty small and easy to overlook. Besides, I, personally, am not particularly fond of emoticons, so I tend to not notice them.
Nevertheless, even though this guy writing the letter wasn't "Dr." Gish, his arguments are just as weak as Gish's.

no. it would be more fun if duane indeed emailed in. this is just a circlejerk.
