Wow this takes me back to late 1993. Chris Huelsbeck just kept churning out classic Turrican themes for these games. This one was every bit as good as T2 and that's saying something. Brilliant.
Another incredible piece from Chris, not at T2 level but a shiny piece of music, like how he try to put a total new writing on this one, even with a LOVELY reprise at 3:36. Love the piano parts. Far superior than Genesis version.
I often hear how Turrican3's music doesn't compare to T2 but there are at least 5 absolute genius songs in the game. Intro takes it's time to grow on you but it's a strong decent piece
I would certainly give the edge to T2 for the amount great songs - especially the title piece, but T3's early levels do feature easily comparable and staggering work
I think even Chris Huelsbeck wonders just how he managed such fine tune work of back then- he was obviously plugged into the source
I feel your pain, my friend. I still have an Amiga A1200, but the once white case has now turned a bit yellowish from age. They certainly knew how to make great music for games... me and my school mates were always inspired and encouraged by it, we made many a composition on Octamed and Dr T's KCS lol. Take a look at this guys channel > mcubex55 < hes got full 1 hour letsplays for Turrican 3, Uridium II, etc. Connect your sound to a Hi-Fi system, boost the bass a little and enjoy :-)
I loved all Turrican games (except the NES Accolade Version) but Turrican 2 + 3 and Super Turrican was the best. Chris did a great job in Turrican 3. :)
I wouldn't say better music. The Megadrive one had better composed music. Sadly I think they rushed the Amiga one a bit. But then I am comparing it to Turrican 2 hehe that intro tune just.. RULED! hehe so it had to live up to alot of hype for me :).
Thanks for uploading this intro. I loved this intro back in the day and the music rocks! This is such a great Amiga tune. Brings back a lot of pleasant memories. Thanks.
I too wish the Amiga library got added to the Virtual Console or Live Arcade so I could have a chance to play some of the games. I played Mega Turrican from the Virtual Console, and now I really want to play Turrican and Turrican II. Not really interested in Super Turrican though.
Shouldn't sell it short. It was my first Turrican experience, and I must say, I thoroughly enjoyed it. May not be 'pure' (whaever that means), but it's a damn fine run'n'gun.
Underrated, yes. It is still a fantastic soundtrack, especially the intro.
But all in all, in my opinion, Turrican 2 has the best video game soundtrack of all time. Unmatched to this day. T2 undoubtedly is Chris` masterpiece.
exactly what I suspected, mega turrican, the inferior console version and the super turrican games, none of these are the amiga versions, the closest the genesis got was the port of turrican 1, perhaps the amiga versions are harder to emulate or the control scheme doesn't work on a wii or 360 controller
The Amiga had so many great games, it would be a great library to use on the Wii virtual console or X box live arcade, unfortunately I suspect the only Turricans that will go there will be either the substandard Genesis versions or the "super turricans" on the snes that are completely outside the proper turrican canon
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Th problem I have with this tune is that it is has a lot of "goodbye Amiga" vibe to it, instead of illustrating the action on the screen. It sounds also a bit tired compared to the Mega Drive soundtrack. Turrican I+II sound a whole lot better.
Btw, the 7 voice routine doesn't use the blitter for mixing. It's Jochen Hippel's 4 voice digi routine for the Atari ST played on 1 Amiga channel.
Nope, it is JOCHEN HIPPEL's 4 voice Atari ST digi routine played on one Amiga channel. Jochen is even credited in Turrican II for that! Voting me down and writing in caps won't make your statement any more true.
Turrican 2 can be very difficult until you have memorised the location of pretty much EVERY 1up in the game, and there are lots if you know where to find them!
Intro/Title music for Turrican II and 3 was actually 7 channel music as opposed to the usual 4. Use of the blitter to do realtime sample mixing meant you could get 7 channels for the music, and the 8th software channel for SFX.
The turrican games were the best thing that factor 5 were ever involved in, a moments silence for the legendary Factor 5 who recently had to file for bankrupcy a real shame
Good question, I have often wondered that, I mean how much time is supposed to have elapsed since the events of Turrican 2?, perhaps Bren remains stasis until he is needed like master chief
Another fine example of true Legendary Amiga Mastery and Genius. Elite coding, graphics, design and music skills at there very best. The Turrican Games set the benchmark for standards.
For those wondering why this game got inferior graphics, physics and sound compared to Turrican2 for example, that's because this one was designed for a gaming console originally, not the Amiga.
This may be the weakest game of the Turrican trilogy, but this intro is so kickass. The imagery makes for a great hero motif and Hülsbeck = game music god.
@leefuji also on this time when this game did came out no one even had a dream that games will have real orchestra music made for this particular game only.
@andi4life on this time Amiga was best gaming platform, we don't get it anymore causes gaming platforms seems to be almost equal, here is no "WOW" effect anymore, you know what i mean...
The bad guy looks a bit like Galactus. And the intro reminds me of UFO, which came a year later, I believe. Wonder if the makers of UFO were influenced by Turrican.
I honestly think they bit off more than they could chew by trying to make a fully fledged 3d Turrican game (aka Thornado), they should have just tried to make another 2d side-scrolling platforming shooter except with 3d graphics, you can never go far wrong with giving people more of the same, as Capcom have proved time and time again. eg,Endless Castlevania, Street Fighter, Megaman and Resident Evil Sequals that all sell by the bucket load, nuff said. ;)
Only the hero with the biggest chin and matching purple hair and clothes can save the day! :P
Seriously though, I absolutely loved this game. All the Turrican games were awesome, I'm surprised Factor 5 haven't tried to re-release or make new with their best lisense. Instead they made, 'Lair'...?
Dedicated sound chip in the Amiga, Paula. Which also controlled over parts of the system (I/O I think as well) - supported 8bit 4 channel stereo sound. The only down side was that Paula was never replaced and remained the same from 1985 through 1994 when C= folded.
Hilarious? It's sick! Very simple yet catchy. That's why I like Hülsbeck so much. He doesn't waste time and energy with over-production. Everything is just the way it should be, nothing more, nothing less.
