  • I was in High School and playing some baritone sax at the time. I saw essentially this same show in Charlotte, NC up front with a good seat. I think it was a sold out show. Changed my whole outlook. I would have loved to have played in the band. It was ALL AWESOME. It was funky, hard, raw and yet very sophisticated and jazzy all in one. Rest in peace J.B.! Your music lives on. My thanks to youtube and the member posting the video.

  • Demonic energy on display here from Mr. Brown..

  • I've seen them all in over fifty years,I can truthfully say no one and I mean NO ONE could follow this man in his prime, he should have been jailed for arson because he burned down more houses than anyone EVER! Rest In Peace KING JAMES.

  • 1:30 on--He's laying down the law. Segues out of that Please please finale-type hedonism into deeply structured format. What he does with the word "back" around 230 is like cubism or all-over abstract expressionism. Master.

  • *****

  • this is the man that put down the groove that we try to live by and play by. thanks jb you will always be soul brother number one.

  • The Godfather of Soul underneath a STROBE LIGHT, now that IS psychedelic!

  • CLASSIC

  • better'n going to church, man.

  • Pandemonium! That's what I remember feeling when witnessing James Brown like this many years ago. I eventually realized that Mr. Brown created this feeling in the audience on purpose. I was so excited after witnessing "The James Brown Revue" back in the day that I couldn't sleep that night. Tickets only costs 99 cents for children like me who were under 12 years old! Mr. Brown probably knew he was creating fans for life! I'm so glad that clips like this are available on YOUTUBE nowadays.

  • We need a superstar, period! Regardless of his race!

  • wow, look how hes preforming in this clip. he ROCKS it so hard. a rockstar before anyone knew what a rockstar was.

  • Shitbanger? you probably look like you slide down a pan.go and listen to abba or something and leave us alone

  • That's soul music, my friend. You sing from the gut, not to impress anyone!

  • I love the singing in this one. "I said back up" "back" back" back" back up" his screaming isn't for everyone. He's so real

  • You just don't get James Brown. I'm mean that's ok, because everybody didn't get James Brown.

  • Why do you take the time to post that drivel?

There's a CCR or Led Zeppelin clip on here that you may enjoy.

  • man,you must be from another planet!

  • This man is nothing but raw, gucket soul! Take it from the BIGGEST JB fan that ever lived!!

  • For those who watch this Papa's bag clip, JB really cooks with the flames after the clips stop. I have the entire show on audio but don't have this DVD! He does a mindblowing "Prisoner of love".

  • hey, any news on JB 1966/67 Olympia shows becoming available on DVD yet? These 66/67 Olympia performances were simply dynamite! For nearly 20 years I could only listen to my audio of these concerts and imagine what he was doing! A rare treat for a collector of 30 plus years. Any TRUE die-hard James Brown fans/collectors out there? Lemme hear ya! Alright now!

  • The thing that killed me laughing was when James performed in Africa the first time and if you see the film, the Blacks looked at him like he was from Mars. He had more soul than all of Africa.

  • The greatest showman, mover, shaker, dancer in the business! If you feel tired, just watch a JB clip with his dance moves. If you think JB couldn't sing listen to 1966 Prisoner of Love or 1966 It's a Man's World.

Thanks so much for this great clip of JB. On my favorites.

JB and Luciano great too together!

    RIP

  • Man, this guy was BADDDDDD! If you watch him dance, and watch Michael Jackson dance, it's the same thing; the poises, the spins, and the moonwalk, of course James called it the "camel" walk.

  • ! Great news, The 3 shows James Brown performed in Olympia 1966, 1967 and 1971 will see a soon release on dvd in mint quality. Stay tuned for more info.

  • where did u hear this?? when is supposed to come out??

  • A company named Reelin in the years that puts out Jazz titles has secured the rights to these and will release them in the near future, possibly 2008.

  • I spoke to someone at Reelin in the years, a few months ago and they told me the same thing.

  • cant wait for this. What excitement

  • I saw James Brown do the splits at The Cincinnati Gardens in October of 1969. He did them twice, in fact. I remeber it well. I even remember the exact date: October 16, 1969

  • 1.55 - 2.55 JB and Maceo - one of the baddest things I have ever seen in my life

  • If u look at the IV patch in his right wrist. That shows u how much he would sweat on stage. His traveling doctor would be on tour with him and give him shots so that wen he sweats he wouldnt injure himself.

  • are you sure that's a IV PATCH?

  • He does seem somewhat relax in this video.not much dancing no splits.but I still like it.I seen the whole show the music and the singing and dancing by james and the famous flames is the stand out in this video.

  • James Brown didn't seem to do any splits from about 1965 to 1972, when he started to do them again.

For example: He doesn't do any splits in the WHOLE Bostom Garden '68 concert or in the '71 Olympia concert.

  • I dissagree he did the splits often in 1971 I seen it with my own two eyes in jacksonville fla. great show and that strobe light made him look faster.I hope they release a tape of those early 70ties concerts. There must be some tape around of that.

  • You can disagree all you want to, but the fact remains JB didn't do any splits from about 1965 until sometime in 1971, early 1972. The show you saw is probably where he started them again. I would bet the shows you saw were from either late 1971 or early 1972, because that's where he started the splts again.

I don't know the exact dates, but if you look at the famous Boston Garden concert from 1968, he does NO splits.

  • A little correction is in order there guy. James did LOADS of splits in his shows during those years. Just not in EVERY show. I know, because I was at every single concert James did in my area, starting with my first JB concert in 1967 at the Kiel Auditorium (St.Louis)

  • PAUL! PAUL! PAUL! Who gives a shit??!! It's about the man and the music. Ali didn't always use his jab - ifyou've been married or with your current woman for any length of time Paul, I'm sure there's some shit you usedn to do that YOU don't do anymore. Who cares? Appreciate the GODFATHER for what he was...one of the greatest that ever did it.

  • To 'JamalSlomack' - What are you referring to, the splits? I don't care that he didn't do splits from 1966 to 1971 as far as enjoying watching him. I am CURIOUS as to WHY he stopped and then started again in 1972 until 1987. To me that is a fascinating aspect, what went through the mind of this genius.

  • Ok Paul, good point. i didn't get that from your post. That is a curious aspect of it all.I'm going to run it by some other JB fiends and see what they speculate. I don'tbelieve it was a health issue as we heard nothing about it back then. The last split I saw him do was immediately following a costume change at Radio City Music Hall where he was headlining in support of "Living In America"

  • I heard from someone that was married to oneof his 60's band members that JB had a mild heart attack in 1965. Maybe that is it, although, I have always wondered about that too. It is a little wierd, becaues, he didn't slow down during that period in any other of his dance moves.

  • That's a very interesting point you make. And on the footage I've seen, it seems to be true, for instance, he was busting splits on his 1972 Soul Train appearance on "Escape-ism". And on his 1979 footage he's busting splits. I think though that the heavy funk of the late 60s changed his dance style greatly. That music was actually more solid and less frenetic. I think the new funk and the black power attitude of the era (calls for "dignity") might have put the splits on ice for a while

  • If you look at the famous Olympia concert from 1971 he does NO splits. If you look at any footage from the Apollo from 1968 he does NO splits. It's possible he did some up until 1967, but I have seen NO footage of him doing splits from 1968-1971.

  • Also, I'll bet the shows you saw were from 1972 because that's where he started that strobe lighting routine.

  • Hey!!! TONY WILSON, WHERE YOU ARE DUDE?

  • Along with other 20th century titans like Wilt Chamberlain and George Foreman, JB defies classification within traditional trajectories of achievement and excellence - dude was from another planet!

  • looks like a clip from the 25th century - incredible.

  • you guys ought to see the entire show. he plays drums on one of the songs. hey hey I feel alright

  • Da Sheeeeeeeezt bayyybee

  • The greatest finish to a show ever. I've seen this gentleman 5 times live in this era and I still get the chills whenever I see him.

  • I can dance better than James, too!

  • Quick dreaming GOODBEAD

  • heaven it´s party now

  • BAD to the BONE from BEGINNING to END!

  • If someone put together a video of all of James' stuff, a dvd even, they'd be rich as hell!!! dude is the greatest

  • Amazing quality for a 40 yr oid video.

  • To GoldBead We all have our own opinion. it's only 3:35mins long but I love it. you need to see the whole show.two different opinions of the same performance. I jus love it. "I say back up, back up, back up. maceo

  • Okay, since you say I have been called out, what I personally call a CLASSIC and great James Brwon performance are: The Tami Show (1964), The Ed Sullivan Show (1966), The Olympia concert (1971), The Zaire concert (1974), and many others besides these....OKAY?

  • Doing it to death....

  • I certainly do NOT consider this a classic performance from JB. In fact, it is one of his worst, in my opinion!

  • We all have our own opinion. it's only 3:35mins long but I love it. you need to see the whole show.two different opinions of the same performance. I jus love it. "I say back up, back up, back up. maceo

  • Then tell us, my brother! You imply that you've seen a number of James Brown's performances to offer such a critical assessment of the slick interplay between James Brown and Maceo. To see James Brown perform any part of it, is something to behold. GOLDBEAD, you just got called out. Or perhaps, you are completely unaware that every James Brown concert was a masterpiece of showmanship. But for the sake of enlightenment, what do you consider a James Brown classic performance?

  • Well, I can agree that every James Brown show was probably better than anybody else's show, but you can only really compare a James Brown performance with another James Brown performance. Did you ever read his book? Even James talks about when he had "off" nights, a bad day at the office. No way are you, ANY OF YOU, bigger JB fans than me. I just happen to prefer many other shows to this one. This is the 67 Olympia Show? The 1966 is better, for instance... IMHO...

  • Yeah, airbody is entitled to their opinion. But some facts simply override opinion. This IS classic JB. AbSOULutely no doubt about it.

  • There are so many things in this clip, it hurts my brain. First of all, he throws his cufflinks into the crowd, thats hilarious. Then the insane transition into Cold Sweat. Does he have a signal? I didn't see anything. Then he completely abandons the actual song and gets into that pure funk conversatin with Maceo, even though the light man is waiting for Maceo's solo. Then the strobe at the end, I don't remember any other JB show with a strobe. Awesome.

  • Maceo dancing as he plays..

    GOOD GAWD!!!

    :O)

  • OH My GOD... The break from Plese,Plese,Plese to Cold

    Sweat almost kill me. :)

  • Classic!!!! I caught myself dancing while I was watching it...lmao. Did he break into another song, while he was supposed to be leaving the stage???? This is da shiznit!!!

  • thank you for posting this. i really enjoyed this. Now it's one of my favorites!

  • DAYUMMM!!!!

    I say DAYUMMM!!!

  • He really knew how to entertain a crowd. This is what's missing from many shows today. There are so many gimmicks and fireworks in a show, that the performer doesn't have to give you much.

  • WOW I just love the screams and the singing."back up and back up" back up" maceo back up" back up" please please please and cold sweat. Thanks telundes

  • wowow classic
