"In order to stabilize world population, it is necessary to eliminate 350,000 people a day. It is a horrible thing to say, but it's just as bad not to say it." — Oceanographer Jacques Cousteau, as quoted in "The Courier," a publication of the U.N. Educational, Scientific & Cultural Organization (U.N.E.S.C.O.)
Seems like Jacques, being the forward looking thinker he was, would have just spent the money to acquire a new ship. Oh well, sentimentality is occasionally nice. Being overly sentimental at sea will get you killed !
wow this boat brings back sch great memories of the under sea world of Jacque Cousteua, As a kid in the 70's he was about the only man that did such things we take for granted today. The CALYPSO was always awesome to see!!
Its not even the same ship anymore....everything is being replaced with new. They might as well just build a complete new one with the original prints. I think they are killing the soul of the ship by replacing everything instead of fixing what was damaged.
WHAT HAPPENED TO THE MILLIONS OF DOLLARS DONATED TO THE COUSTEAU SOCIETY OVER THE YEARS ? I FIND IT VERY HARD TO BELIEVE THAT THE SHIP IS IN RUINS AND OF COURSE MANY MILLIONS WILL NEED TO BE SPEND TO GET HER SAILING AGAIN. THE TITANIC LOOKS IN BETTER SHAPE ON THE BOTTOM THEN THIS ONCE PROUD SHIP ! WHAT DO THEY PLAN TO DO WITH IT ONCE IT IS REPAIRED ? IT ALL LOOK FISHY TO ME .
It's one of the largest wooden hull research and diving vessels still in existence today.
Rumor has it that it was hit by a barge and sank for a short time before being rescued and has undergone some work. It was also seen in Miami. There's a youtube video on that.
Fascinating documentary. Please note the virtual absence of protective face masks on the workers, who are exposed to all manner of particulate debris. Makes you wonder about health issues, doesn't it? Not to complain!
Imagine such an operation taking place in the domestic US, however.
Francine Cousteau like the rest of the sycophants that continue to milk as much as they can from the Cousteau name, is oddly very much like the boat itself. Rotten to the core and basically worthless.
She continues to masquerade as a person of scientific or cultural significance that has something to contribute.
Is it any wonder that the Cousteau Society remains a shell of what it once was?
If that non-profit were run like a Fortune 500 company she would have been shown the door long ago.
According to Wikipedia the restoration stalled 1 year ago due to several hundred thousand euros being owed. This after Francine Cousteau had spent a huge amount of money in legal fees to prevent Jacques daughter from his first marriage becoming involved in the project. Dear oh dear.

Poor old boat was so badly neglected. They should just sink her and let her rest.

An now the company in charge of the restoration battle to retrieve the payement of the works done.
With a possible decision by the justice, allowing them to sell the "boat" to settle the debt.
Definitely a SHAME
