SInce this version of the iPhone has the Qualcomm chip that works on CDMA and GSM. Why won't a software up just be needed to make the device interchangable?

If not, what else will be added to the iPhone 5 that will accomplish this transition?

@liquidk9 I've also heard that CDMA's lower frequencies penetrate buildings better than GSM's higher frequencies, making CDMA perform better in larger cities.

@iFixitYourself Verizon simply buys more bandwidth per each cell tower they have. If you've never noticed, every cell tower has all the wireless companies' hubs around them. Who gets better reception is who pays the company leasing the tower's bandwidth more.

@iFixitYourself If that's true, then how do you explain the superior GSM network at Europe? CDMA is an out dated technology and Verizon knows that well yet replacing the whole network and switching to GSM will tear it apart budget-wise.

Actually, 3G GSM Is also uses Code division multiple access (WCDMA). I think Verizon is better than AT&T as AT&T just has a crappy network

@kdu3142 This is purely a guess, but I assume that because they've built their entire network around CDMA, the cost of switching to GSM/maintaining both a CDMA and GSM network is prohibitive.

@liquidk9 CDMA hands off calls more reliably, so fewer dropped calls when you're moving from cell to cell. The call quality is a little better as well, but that's about all it has going for it.

@liquidk9 In many parts of the US, Verizon has build out a much more reliable CDMA EV-DO network than AT&T's GSM/HSPA network. However, I'm quite certain that a network's reliability depends mostly on the buildout and not the air interface protocol.

@ethanm23 Att is a GSM phone provider. You know the ones with Sim cards. Verizon is a CDMA phone provider which means the radio is integrated. No sim card.
