If you can get past the cringe-inducing prologue Opera rewards you with being one of Argento's best movies.Of course,as in most of his works, the characters occasional incongruous behaviour can annoy, (drying your hair just after you have witnessed a murder is one example), but of course this is usually the norm for an Argento film and in the case of Opera the stylish murder scenes more than make up for it.Thankyou for a great review.
Also with the US it's a case of sex is bad, violence is fine for the most part but you'll probably find that any film that went through the MPAA would have been up against a tough set of criteria. The US however does have the option of going unrated which is why there are more complete cuts in the US than here
What most people really struggle to understand is that the DPP list of video nasties was not a structured or thought out thing. It really was a completely arbitrary list of films that for one reason or another, sometimes for no better reason than the title, caught their attention. Thats why so many were not considered video nasties in the true sense.
The only problem I have with this one is that the needles under the eyes dont really work to keep her eyes open, she could close her eyelids quite easily, but thats just me being petty...lol
Given what Malcom McDowell went through in Clockwork Orange and coupled with Dario saying that Cristina Marsillach was the most difficult actress he's workes with its probably understandable that the props were not too realistically effective as I'm guessing she'd kicked up a shit strom that'd been heard the other side of the milky way. That said they didn't look comfortable at all
The Itallian horrors are a wonderfully varied collection of movies. I am a masive fan of the itallian horrors, some of my faveourite films come from it. The Itallian film industry in general is very good, the neo realist films are excellent (though not in the horror genre)
Well thats settled then...Shivers it will be...(or possibly Rabid if you'd like it). I love Cronenbergs films. They're so deeply twisted up with imagry and metaphore that they can be watched very deeply. Thats something I love if you hadn't noticed LOL
Cheers Dominik. Yeah I think it was too, but after Suspiria its very hard to keep up to that standard. I must review Suspiria sometime but I reckon a Cronenberg classic is due next for the BTN playlist. I'm quite tempted to do one of his early films.
Of course, Suspiria was not beatable and I think he knew it even then. I'd really like to see you reviewing it, but I'd even more like you to do a Cronenberg classic. Shivers or The Brood. Or any Cronenberg film, it doesn't matter, because I love them all LOL
It's hard to believe this was a flop isn't it. I shall look for the two disc set, the original music in this is quite something and the film in general has some iconic moments and images that is is amazing to think its not regarded higher. Guess that metal soundtrack did for it to some extent
This was Dario Argento's first major flop in Italy. But then the opera is Verdi's 'Macbeth', which brings bad luck to people. I feel that it's one of his best, and I especially love the main theme by Claudio Simonetti. You can hear the soundtrack if you buy the two disc set. Great review and keep them coming.
Excellent review! I've allways felt Argentos films suffered from style over content. This allways seemed to stop you becoming really emotionaly involved with the characters. Also he uses the most attractive cast he can find which makes stories harder to believe. He seems more interested in the technicals of cinematography than the story telling itself. He is a great creator of sequences, but if think he may never produce a truly great film as a whole! That said i still like Argentos films

Another killer review, sir!
I actually think this Argento's 3rd best film and a bit underrated. What a great late Giallo!

Great review! Opera is without a doubt a movie that doesn't get enough recognition among the Argento films.
Great choice for your first BTN review
