I remember this video when I was a little, little boy growing up and this use to come on MTV and VH!. This is from his second solo album, "Nothing Like The Sun" (1987). The video and the song in genreal, is really cool. Sting still f---in' rules=)!!!
I first saw this video on vhi classic, and ass soon as i heard that bassline, I was hooked. My favorite sting song. This song is cool like water, man!
I'd never seen this clip and i'm fascinated. The lyrics are so profound and real, for all the suffering we can experience... And his face is gorgeous, black&white makes it more strong even... His expression at 4:35 is... too much.... Makes me want to be there, touching him, watching him... Greatest musician in these last decades. Poet, musician, all has been said...
I aphishally(cant spell sorry XD) Declare that sting is a mage with sleeping powers. Why? Cuz i'm still tired! I just ate 2 boxes of suger and still when i heard the song i fell asleep! I never can fall asleep so easly! Ushally im tossing and turning no matter how comfy i am! It makes no sence! And im sleepy again.....
so many miss the true meaning of this song. Sting practised yoga for years--meditation. But the truth is instead of searching every book to sooth the thoughts that plague--search the holy book--and pray/meditate on histruth for then a broken and contrite heart--WILL have peace.
religious comments tend to be thought of unkindly on youtube from what i've seen. people tend to rate them down without thinking. I won't however even though I'm not religious.
I was driving on the fringe of East LA and he was at a very small park shooting the stills where he's lying down at the beginning. The girl in the video was there too. I got to talk to him he was cool. I little Mexican boy said something to him-I don't know what but Sting replied, "Who do you think I am, Barry Manilow"? It was all good natured. It wasn't long after that I saw him in concert in Rio the day his dad died.
This song is freakin creative, from the composition and showing off his variety of lyrical skill to the unpredictable melodies & chords. The PreChorus & the first 2 lines in the chorus - the arrangement in it is my favorite.
Real songwritters, you know what I'm talkin bout, he's crazy good!
A song for those still running, and not yet shattered though stuck in the perpetual Checkmate. I have never been certain if this was written to tell the tale of a heart or to capture anothers, but either way it reminds me mine still beats.
There will be a show you might well be interested in on April 10 Friday night on CTV called "Spectacle". Elvis Costello interviews all three members of The Police! He interviewed Elton John last week - clever, insightfull and funny.
wasn't this about the time... (if I remember correctly it was him) ...he made a cameo acting appearance, not feature film like when he played dr. frankenstien but later as the teenage girl's "too old" boyfriend on NBC's ALF?
I had the good fortune to meet Sting while he made this video. They were shooting stills while he was lying on the ground. Some little kid said something to him and Sting replied, " who do you think I am, Barry Manilow? In a very playful way I might add. Real gentleman.
I enjoy this song. The theme reminds me of "In a New York Minute" by Don Hinley and Give Me Your Eyes, Brandon Heath - we have to sometimes slow down and realize what is important and share it.
"And I wriggle like a fish caught on dry land, struggle to avoid any helping hand." What a sincerely deep lyric that you can actually see and feel! I am no expert or even a novice concerning poetry, but that is moving.
agree 100% also "sink like a stone thats been thrown in the ocean, my logic has drrowned in a sea of emotion". sting is one of the greatest songwriters ever.
the thoughts of this song go further beyond this world a place inside your heart. Be still my beating heart. and being suspended in time like that gee i wonder why? not listening? get ready end time is here.
questa canzone x anni è stata una compagna di vita nel vero senso della parola.E' DI UNA BELLEZZA INDESCRIVIBILE,LA MIA ANIMA HA VIBRATO OGNI VOLTA CHE LA SENTTIVA.UN'OPERA D'ARTE FIRMATA STING.
Her name is Mitzi Martin- she married the lead singer of Velvet Revolver. I just saw her on a E! Channel special about Rock Star Wives...she's still that lovely.
Wasn't Mitzi Martin in Ashton's movie "Dude where's my car", I think she was the leader of the group of Aliens calling themselves 'Hot Chicks'. She really is HOT.
A beautiful way of saying "I'm sprung" this song is. Fell in love with the Randy Watson Project rendition of this song, and discovering this original Sting version is something special.
main bass riff(starts at 0:20) is smokin- only two notes but listen how solid and strong it is. of course since sting is also a bassist this is no suprise...this is one of my favorite of many by him
Nothing but positive replys and I couldn't agree more. No question, the best writer/player of the modern age. Timeless music it is. This music motivates, inspires and relaxes me. No music has ever gave me this feeling. It jazz inspired, so no suprise.
You hit the nail on the head...there are studio produced singers, or shall I say performers, who could'nt put a sentence together, and then here is Sting, the consummate lyricist, song-writer, story teller, whose words mirror or echo a part of every living persons life..."Sink like a stone that's been thrown in the ocean, my logic has died in a sea of emotion" --Right up there with Shakespear.
Sting is brilliant...a musical genius...highly intelligent...highly motivated...with god given talent that is incomparable on many levels...he is a true artist...a voracious student of the art...with an endless thirst to explore and reinvent...it's simply amazing what he has accomplished and how much he has contributed to the art of music...WOW..!
I read that this was written by Sting in response to the death of his mother. When you think of that, and listen to the lyrics, it makes the song that much more resonating.
I have seen him in concert twice and he is so good live. I both his books and I still can't get enough. Sting's music is timeless and the man himself is aging like fine wine. LOVE HIM!
that's a deep comment, bout the 3.06 part..i think it's great too, my younger brother bought this record in '88, i was too pissed off the police we're not together to listen to it....i missed out on a lot! i gave in a started listening to sting and got knocked out by his music and still do. To JOESENTER, is it manu on this on the drums? i thought it was omar hakim.... let me know if im talking rubbish.
I used to close my eyes and doze a bit in my car with the CD player on random shuffle during lunchtimes in a job I had. I remember waking slowly to hear the break in this song at 3:06. I thought I was in heaven. I realised I was just in the car park.
This is what the Police would have sounded like in '86 had they stayed together. Andy Summers is on the guitar track and it was rumored that Copeland was asked to play on it as well but declined because he did not like the song. Good thing. Manu's playing is much better. I also think this song displays Sting's brilliance for writing great piano melodies. Excellent comments btw. Goes to show that there are You Tubers with taste.
I agree 100% with you Joe--Hopefully you've seen Sting in some solo concerts as I have (count 6 so far) plus 2 of The Police concerts and hope later this year (May 24th) in Glendale @ Cricket Pavilion! :-D It's also a great lovemaking song-my 1st exwife was in full agreement everytime hehe...
I was such a Sting fan at the time of this song. He was at that time my favorite artist. He is still one of my all time 3 favorite artists. What a great memory watching this old video.
They need to play this for the armies of the world until they drop their weapons, sit down, and start making out with strangers.. Make awkward sexual advances, not war. *peace*
of all of the songs made since he left the police, this one is my all time favorite.the trumpet playing of wyntom marselis is very good.they had worked together before and i hope to hear more in the future.
Branford, not Wynton. Wynton is the brother that is a jazz purist and if I remember correctly, he along with a lot of other jazz purists did not approve of Branford's playing with Sting's band.
sting certainly demonstrates that skill & craftsmanship counts...i generally prefer industrial, post-punk, triphop, and stuff like nine inch nails. i detest easy-listening and 'adult-contemporary' music as a rule; which is often the genre that sting tends to get lumped-in with...but this song undeniably has texture, drama, impact & depth to it; it's well-composed and well-executed. i don't like heavier music so much that i'm unable to appreciate these elements.

Take out the instrumental, and this is pure poetry. Sting is a genius.
"Sink like a stone thats been thrown in the ocean, my logic has drowned in a sea of emotion..." thats just good.
And i like how the chorus is taken out after the second verse so you can just hear the instrumental; the piano is so beautiful.

Have not been to as many shows a you have but I like the exwife story! Never hear something like this on the radio again!

*peace*

Sting had Andy Summers play backup guitar on this song along w/Wynton Marsalis...I love it alot because of its even flow and rhythms!
WarlordFeyd 4 years ago
Branford, not Wynton. Wynton is the brother that is a jazz purist and if I remember correctly, he along with a lot of other jazz purists did not approve of Branford's playing with Sting's band.

I meant to say Branford-my bad-tyvm KuttyJoe for the clarification...:-)Hopefully you own the album as I do.

sting certainly demonstrates that skill & craftsmanship counts...i generally prefer industrial, post-punk, triphop, and stuff like nine inch nails. i detest easy-listening and 'adult-contemporary' music as a rule; which is often the genre that sting tends to get lumped-in with...but this song undeniably has texture, drama, impact & depth to it; it's well-composed and well-executed. i don't like heavier music so much that i'm unable to appreciate these elements.
