that gas mask wont save you from much, especially the filter. most of the filters the GP-5 gas mask come with are new old stock and are in circulation becuase they are expired. check out this vid about gas masks
Sorry to say, that "NBC Gas Mask" will not do ANYTHING for you. That gas mask was made in the cold war and the filter's expiration date is either 80's or 90's. 20-30 years passed the expiration date, the activated carbon in the gas filter will become loose and get in your lungs. ALSO I see it's unopened, I suggest putting it on because it is small (even the large). The filter is NOT NBC rated. I suggest the NEW Generation M-13 Israeli Gas Mask with a NATO NBC filter.
OH! And HYDROGEN PEROXIDE is another ESSENTIAL. It kills germs, bacteria etc is an antiseptic, laxative, purgative, teeth cleaner, wound sterilizer. Get it at the supermarket for $4 a bottle, I always have some on hand.
grapeape19470 is quite right about getting a full tang knife. I would also consider a machete and a tomahawk for heavy chopping, as well as a small shovel. check out the Russian spetznaz machete. It's all toools in one.
Just a quick note on your large knife while they are great for storage the hollow handle is a bad idea for chopping wood and hard jobs get yourself a full tang knife also you can get a good one cheap on ebay
eBay is a good spot, the best is if you have a surplus store close by so you don't have to pay shipping. I do not, so I used eBay, and still think I did good.
@burrheadjr if u could get ur hands of a swedish army c-battle gear that would be nice and a gasmask and u would have good chase to survive nerv toxin 2 :D
@SweStuff94 lol it would certainly be nice, but in a survival situation you need to conserve pack space, so unfortunately leaves are the way to go. Just make sure you check for bugs first
@burrheadjr You did good! NBC Gas mask is the only way to go. Can I suggest a few additions? Food rations, water rations/sachets, CB radio, emergency tent (tube tent), slingshot and ammo, small hachet, drink mix sachets, collapsible water bottles, cigarette lighters, potassium Iodide powder/tablets. All cheap useful additions.
@usedive food rations as in emergency food rations. Canned foods are very heavy, although provide a useful container to cook in afterwards. They also make emergency stoves/cutlery I've seen in the surplus stores here.
@usedive also canned foods contain alot of heavy fluid to fill the gaps. I have alot of dehydrated food in my kit. Potato powder, rice, lentils, milk powder.
@burrheadjr Gas masks won't do anything without a chemical suit. ALSO you need to make sure the gas mask and gas mask filter is still within the expiration date.
Just couple things... You were right about having a good knife for survival situations but the wrong part was the knife you chose for it , first you don't wants a knife that has a hollow handle, it has to be a full tang and the rest of those things you can pack somewhere else in the bag. Second you want a carbon steel knife for it holds the edge much longer and its easier to sharp that a reg stainless steel blade. Those were not sleeping bags but survival blankets.
If you want to be able to collect water, then i recomend the Playtapus(sp?) bags that are completely flat when there isn't anything in them. just a recomendation.
good bag. Two things: 1) You may want to split up the duct tape by rolling it onto a few different used gift cards. Doing this maximizes space by flattening and breaking up the role as well as making it possible for more than one person (if you have people with you) to use the tape at the same time, like if sealing the windows needed to be done quickly. 2) You may want hygeine products such as "Wisk" toothbrushes and baby wipes. After a couple days youll b glad u have them.
What surprised you the most about Vancouver when you first arrived to the Olympics? I might visit in February 2011? I heard it doesn't get extreme arctic-like cold?
@tr78jjhbh That is right, The temperature was in the 50s when I went this past February. The size of the mountains is impressive too. In most major cities, the skyscrapers dominate the skyline, but in Vancouver, The sky skyscraper are impressive, but the mountains behind them truly dominate the skyline, and looks really cool. They people are friendly, and there is a lot to do, the city is really big.
That's very interesting! I also heard the cherry blossoms were in full bloom? Does that EVER happen in Washington, D.C. in February? I guess you were surprised to discover that Vancouver during winter is no Minneapolis or Chicago! Is that the warmest February (whole month) you've ever experienced?
Good, vid, good kit but most of it is useless if it gets wet!
It looks heavy and looks like it would sink in water so you should keep it in a big waterproof box AND leave loads of air inside so it floats!
A rucksack with waterproof bag would be better and easier to carry also.
If this stuff gets wet like in a hurricane or flood then you have problems and it would be a shame to get it wet. oh yeah and maybe a bootle of water and metal cup would be a good addition.
my one suggestion would be, a knife sharpener, with all that magnesium flinting, your knife might get dull, and nothings worse than a duller knife in a real tough jam
you should compact you duct tape and put the radio in some kid of waterproof bag take the gas mask out of the box you will save room you should also get a small sowing kit and some fishing kit and get some lighter food cand food is good but it is to heavy
its a decent kit for starting but i'm not sure if the items in your kit are reliable and even practical in a survival situ. The knife you got there is JUNK..no good knife will have a hollow handle or made of stainless steel. Vaseline on a bruise or wound will attract dirt/dust and cause infection- it works in a boxing ring but not ideal in a survival situation. Most crank radio/lights are junk unless u spend alot of $..given that u carry a hollow handle knife- u prob hav a cheap crank radio
Good pack. To be honest though, the gas mask is good for if somebody shoots tear gas into your house but, wont do crap if there was a bio/chem/nuke attack/accident. Good vid though.
@tstockt The Gas mask isn't made for the nuke hit withing a mile of your house its made to keep you from inhaling radiation although you can still die from radiation absorbing through your skin
Take some of the vaseline, and cover some cotton wool in it for waterproof tinder. Get a couple of good maps of you local area, printed on a teashirt (a compass and no maps, great). Get some proper paracord. A cast net will get you dinner from a stream, a fishing line could garrote your next meal if you're that way inclined. Why carry battery operated, and dynamo? Portable filters make iodine obsolete. You want to make a tarp shelter without anchor pegs, best of luck.

@mrelanzkit I have a couple
improv tourniquet
securing a tarp/signal flag
if you pop a button on your shirt/pants
VERY cheap snare (1 in 25 will work but its worth a shot)
cheap lock (protect bag/tent from racoons)
mark a trail (put on tree branches at eye level)
secure sharp object to a stick (CHEAP improv spear)
keep your bag off the ground by securing it to a branch
...I'm sure there are more, I just can't think of any more off the top of my head.
