I don't usually comment much on YouTube but I was here, front row with my buddy Walt at Jerry's feet. It was a speechless performance and he blew my face off; the notes during the break went right through my forehead, and Walt looks at me like, "I just don't know dude"... and yes it was during very unstable moments during the cold war...
I went to that one. One of the few shows where they ended on a beautiful Dew instead of following it with a Sugar Mag or some other Bobby dreck. It soothed my soul.

@shenked Actually, yes. This was a magical time to be a young head. Camping was still allowed in the park across from the Spectrum. By the next year we were made to camp in the parking lots in Philly. But the boys always put on great shows in Philly. However I have to say, there's nothing that can prepare you for West coast shows. Amazing.
Story I heard is Jerry was motivated because he was pissed at Bobby for playing Lost Sailor earlier (last time sailor ever played). Jerry wouldn't let Bobby play sailor after he heard it was about him (jerry). So jerry said fu bobby, i'm not that "lost".. so shut up and listen to me play this!
This is definitely a strong Dew here, in a year that gets little love. I was at this show (went to the Hampton and then this Philly run, all 6 shows, during spring break). What doesn't really come through in the audio here is Brent's playing. He does a lot to make this a unique, powerful version. I still think that the Dew from Hampton, VA, spring 1984 is better (the best I've heard). Go track that monster down...April 14th (or so), 1984...Hampton Coliseum...also out of space like this one.
@4uchuck Bro i had a dear friend whose name when we shortened it was joe rick. What is the last name of the joe rick you speak of? Me and my friend joe rick saw many a show together and shared many, many life experiences on the road of the traveling circus that we called " the grateful dead'' Joe passed away a few years back and the world lost a classic dude if there ever was one.Man do i miss joe he was and still is a true brother of mine.my wife never met him but she feels she has from stories
@ittaiman yeah u consider what we used to do to get our hands on a few good quality tapes and it wasn't that long ago... technology is good for something.
Seattle Paramount...1978... my friend (who had to go to school that day)... convinced me to go see The Dead. I had never seen them, but he played many bootlegs for me. So I'm standing outside of the Paramount.... havin' a toke.... dude walks up to me and just says, "Hey"..... I hand him my "cigarette"....hehehhe... And I say, "Look at that crazy round apartment building". He takes a toke and says, "Yeah, that's wild." He then knocks on door, and says "enjoy the show." It was JERRY !
great sound quality. very hard to hear this without breaking down. there will never be another like him or them. without a doubt the most emotionally intense rock guitarist of all time.
There is no way any of you remember this show....hahaha! Just kidding. I thought I remembered it, but I checked my records, and it turns out I was there in '84. Oh well......I know I got an exquisite Dew.
1986 was not the best of years for the good ol' grateful dead.this show was 1 of the better ones no doubt.and for whatever reason the band loved philly and up until 1990 each and every show in philly was waaayyy high.
I miss you Jerry. Thanks for the post. Such emotion. How can you not love this! Shakedown the whole experience when Jerry left we lost so much. He is one of the reason's I am happy to be alive in my time. I can say I remember Jerry.
The Spectrum was always a treat. the sound was excellent that night. I guess it doesn't matter anyway. I miss this man very much. Just not the same with out his infectious laugh.... God Bless You Jerry Thank You for the wonderful memories.
This show & song was very special! It was the night I found out my dad died from a long illness..I told my friends the night Jerry would play this my dad would die .Thanks fo the memory.
Got ripped off the night before this show they got everything but my tickets. And to be honest about it I figured that they stole a bunch of worthless material crap and about 1200 in cash but left behind the most valueable thing I had at the time TWO TICKETS for the show..... I hope that the beautiful lil sister I miracled with the other ticket enjoyed the show as much as I did, and if you are out there thanks for the awesome hippie hug and whatever was in the drink you gave me!!!! peace to all
Gorgeous...quality v. quantity - this is the former & I'll take it every time.
It sounds like Jerry's trying to cut it short, as he neglects the usual musical interludes between the first few verses.
But the band rocks this nite, and he raises his performance accordingly, particularly on the last solo passage. Inspired vocals throughout, though. Many thanks!
I was there too. I've seen 'em everywhere there was to see 'em and something about those Philly shows stands out. The crowd was just right. The band was just right. The 'supplies' were just right. And I got to take in a show or two with my little brother. Life was good.
I attended hundreds of shows and taped more than 150 shows. These string of three Philly shows in '86 stand as three of my most memorable. A comment obviously posted by a very biased east coast deadhead taper. I'd love these shows in full on DVD someday. Oh to wish.....
Was at this show. THis closed the second set. They could not play anything better after this. The place was going crazy. Morning Dew Was a Philly staple.
