@sokkacool Yeah, don't forget that her name will be pronounced "Tofu" if the pattern of changing names to "proper pronunciation" continues.
And it's not the matter of ONE CHARACTER being Asian. It's the fact that the casting specifically called for Caucasians over any other race, the fact that the bad guys are ALL dark skinned, and the fact that the movie makers are being incessantly ignorant of the culture behind the show.
@reket1990 Tofu? okaaay weird and obviously you havent seen the new tv spots cause the guy that might be haru is asian his dad is asian THE EARTH BENDERS ARE ASIAN!!!! *sorry mini freak out*

@reket1990 look i will admit at 1st i thought the cast was a BIG mistake but i thought "what am i thinking? its a freaking MOVIE!" so eventualy i grew to really like the cast (plus i love dev patel and jackson rathbone!)
@sokkacool It's a movie that will have an impact on millions of people worldwide. A movie that will now send the message to children that Caucasian people must rescue East Asians, and dark-skinned people must always be the enemy (your lovely Indian-Fire Nation Dev Patel included.)
@reket1990 please can we just drop this!? there is 3 days to go! if your trying to change my mind or make me doubtful its not gonna work. and F.Y.I i love zuko hes 1 of my fav characters i dont care who plays him but i love dev patel hes a brilliant actor!
@sokkacool You can drop it whenever you want, if you haven't noticed. And I'm not trying to instill doubt. I'm pointing out that people like you, who love the movie before it's even done anything great, have no sense of justice, the same justice that is portrayed within the original TV show. How does that make you people fans if you can't even exhibit this theme or morality? Have you people not attained anything at all from the show other than watching the violence, then?
@reket1990 im not really saying that i love the movie already. im just saying that i think it looks cool. thats why i want to see it. thats why i wanted to see Titanic, and The Lovely Bones. because i thought they looked like they were worth watching. i think the last airbender is worth watching and that why i want to see it. again your making comments about me! i could easily say something about you! and i dont think anout viloence when i watch the cartoon i just think "EPIC!"
@reket1990 That very logic you're using, that it will 'send the wrong message to kids' is the very same poor logic that said that shows with fighting like this and DBZ would make kids violent. Or that if a kid sees someone shoot somebody in a movie then they'll want to shoot someone. Or that rock, metal, or hip hop music will make people do bad things. Forms of media do not create bad behavior. The people that kids grow up with create behavior, not entertainment.
@Spideyfan117 Then logic this: Casting calls were made for people with "Caucasian or any other ethnicity". Frank Marshal apologized way late into post-production for the movie saying that it was an accident and not their fault. Well guess what? Accidents have repercussions even if those were not the intention. No matter how they apologize, it still stands that the casting was racially biased. (cont)
@Spideyfan117 (cont) The fact that they even changed pronunciation of names like "Aang" and "Iroh" prove that they recognize these names have a real life counterpart/ORIGIN. Shyamalan claims the animated characters are racially ambiguous. So what, skin color can be ambiguous but names are okay? That's BULL.
@reket1990 Sorry, that point had literally nothing to do with you saying it would send the wrong message to kids. And if it did, it still doesn't matter, because as I've already pointed out, negative behavior is not spawned by entertainment media. And saying something is 'racially biased' is left open to your own interpretation. I believe if you're taking that way, you might just be one with your mind in the gutter. It's difficult to even say something about these irrelevant points you made.
@Spideyfan117 Actually, you're the one who completely missed my point. I never said it'd be a bad example to kids because of racial looks. It's a bad message to kids that it's alright to cast with bias because you'd get away with it. Okay to be unjust as long as money was involved. Nothing whatsoever to do with looks.
And I was giving you more reasons why this movie is unjust, to prove that no matter what you believe, you can't logically think that the movie was in the right, doing what it did.
@reket1990 "A movie that will now send the message to children that Caucasian people must rescue East Asians, and dark-skinned people must always be the enemy (your lovely Indian-Fire Nation Dev Patel included.)" A direct quote. Saying that the movie is sending such a message to kids. Don't try to twist your words around after you've already said them. The casting will send no such message to kids that 'white people must rescue Asians' and that 'dark skinned people are bad.
@reket1990 Also, your poor sense of self-righteousness is baffling. You're complaining about something you consider 'bad' (though it's not). And while you're doing that you waste time that you could be using to do something good. What you're doing is feeding the fire that is hate on the internet. I don't believe there is any such casting bias. It's a movie based on a CARTOON, who cares what race plays a character? It's fiction.
@Spideyfan117 I care because it affects the way some people are stereotypically viewed, and it affects the livelihood of many others. Your lack of concern is what is disconcerting. I AM doing something good about it, despite how much time you think it takes to type out a 500 character message.
And don't compare my self-righteousness to your meager state of mind. If you can't even explain why you believe something is "not bad", don't say it.
@reket1990 I have explained it. Several times. It has no effect on the mindset of children or the general public. This is comparable to the psychological study of political socialization. When somebody is exposed to media they are not magically forced into a mindset promoted by that medium. A person is much more likely to adopt the mindset of those they are around. And how does it create a stereotype of any kind? It doesn't make any race look good or bad.
@Spideyfan117 Unless you can explain studies done that prove how TV doesn't affect the mindset of children, I beg to differ. Developmental Psychology studies at the University of Michigan, studies with Roberts, Rideout, Foehr, McDonough, and others that point to how TV DOES have an affect. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics, Committee on Public Education have done studies that find a pattern. Like I said, prove it or shut up.
@reket1990 What is rather interesting is that you claim i didn't explain the study. Then you say there are studies that DO prove it, yet you don't explain them. Anybody smell a hypocrite?
@Spideyfan117 Hah! Hypocrite? Why do I have to try and find them? If you want to use that in your argument, I've got four words for ya: YOU go find them.
@reket1990 Once again, I could tell you EXACTLY the same thing. Watch. I've got four words for ya: YOU go find it. Otherwise, I'm going to have to call bull on you. See? Am I the only one who sees the hypocritical actions you're displaying? I never said you had to find anything. I simply called you out on the fact that you said i didn't explain the study i mentioned, while you didn't explain the studies you mentioned. That is hypocrisy.
@Spideyfan117 No, because I provided evidence that backed MY argument. If you want to argue the other way, YOU need to provide that evidence to back YOUR argument. See how your logic doesn't exactly work...? Have you never written an research essay in your life or something? Why do I need to explain this?
@reket1990 You provided no evidence. Show this 'evidence' you speak of. You are arguing with no reason. And that's rather besides the point. The point being you were hypocritical. You did NOT explain any of the studies that you claimed would back you argument while telling me that I didn't do the same thing (hypocritical). You then went on to tell me that I should confirm the studies you proposed for myself while not doing the same for the study i proposed (hypocritical) See where this is going?
@Spideyfan117 It's amazing how you don't know how to research. Read back a few posts and I told you the professors, universities, and studies that support my point. You have not listed any. Is this true or not? And don't make up bull to hide this simple yes or no question.
@reket1990 I mentioned a study on political socialization. More importantly media as an agenda setter. This doesn't focus purely on behavior in the case we've discussed, but the evidence applies because it's the same principle. Maxwell Mccombs, Donald Shaw, and Lazarfield. The studies on the Agenda Setting Theory as a whole dont apply, but the Cognitive Effects Model does. A person has set opinions, media can't change those opinions. People's opinions won't be shaped by this sort of thing.
@reket1990 That was not the point. I simply proved to you evidence for my point and side of the argument existed. I expected a rebuttal, but all I got out of you was a few words that hardly apply to the conversation.
@Spideyfan117 It took so much effort into even CONVINCING you to provide evidence for your argument, that your lack of common, argumentative sense isn't even worth debating with. Can you imagine if I rebuked what you just said and we go through another fifteen messages with me trying to tell you that you actually need proof to back what you claim?
@Spideyfan117 "Tells you nothing"...my point exactly. No matter what I say, you can't seem to comprehend it. Maybe I'm using words that are too complicated for you to understand--who knows? I wonder if you even understand what I'm typing right now.
@reket1990 Once again. It tells me nothing. It seems like a simple excuse to prevent you from backing up your side of the argument. Which is what I thought you wanted to do. You said it was so important to you. Apparently not.
@Spideyfan117 And you've become so repetitive with your "tells me nothing" slogan that a broken record sounds more interesting. I've effectively backed my claims right off the bat; you took a legion of upwards of fifteen posts just to make one point. Yes, or no? Don't even try not answering the question, or evading it with vague excuses.
@reket1990 No, I made plenty of points. However, that is STILL irrelevant. You're the one who had such a self-righteous position on the matter. And now you've merely resorted to taking jabs at me which aren't going to get you anywhere.
@Spideyfan117 You made points without proving them; it is completely relevant, because we are supposed to be in a debate, and if one side doesn't know how to even prove a point, then it's pointless.
The fact you even said "resorted" to taking jabs proves your immaturity. If you're so interested in debating, why haven't you made a point of discussion all this time? Does it only rely on me to make the debate? There IS NO debate. "getting you anywhere"--please. Go get yourself somewhere first.
@reket1990 I DID prove my points. And after I did prove it, you just dropped it. That also has nothing to do with my level of maturity. It was yet again just taking another jab, as well as your ending statement. You made such a huge deal out of this whole thing and right after I prove one point you decide to drop it. I'm wondering why. And don't give me any of that "You're too immature to comprehend anything I've said." Oh also, you saying "pleas. Go get yourself somewhere first."... Immature
@Spideyfan117 And you seem to be very avid to make your own points, or else you would have stopped posting already--so why have you not made your own point? Like I said, why don't you get yourself somewhere first before pointing fingers. Sheesh.
@MissNicolaHeart if your good at acting id run down to those auditions fast! id love to be Toph. but sadly im not asian *sigh* if you do audition good luck :)
@reket1990 honestly? because western civilization has become dominant in today's world. eastern asia has become more and more westernized throughout history instead of the other way around...
@Hrairoo53 Wow...you're a case of western superiority if I ever saw one. I mean, after all, the martial arts exhibited in this movie were surely a western influence on eastern culture, and that's what makes it okay for Caucasian people to not have the ability to relate to people of other races. (please note that this is heavy sarcasm).
@reket1990 ?? relax, dude... i'm not trying to say i support this, i was simply explaining a fact. unless you want to disagree that Europe has had an impact on asia in the last 500 years?
you asked why caucasians are considered the neutral/relatable race in the media, and i just proposed a reason. as an asian who watches a lot of movies, i don't think caucasians should be a 'default' race, but in hollywood, that's just the way it is. hollywood markets its movies to a white, young adult audience
@Hrairoo53 Asians have as much of an impact on western society than the other way around. That's why I don't agree with that argument. And why can't white, young adult audiences relate to young adults of other apparent ethnicities? I think that is a degrading view of the audience. That also disregards the fact that ultimately, we are ONE RACE--human.
@reket1990 i agree with you, however, culturally, modern asia has become far more westernized rather than the other way around. no one denies that, same as no one denies the influence asia has on the west, socially, technologically, etc...
i believe young adult whites can and do relate to other ethnicities, however, hollywood is very conservative with its money. its reasoning is that it has always targeted young, white males and will continue to do that as long as it makes money.
@reket1990 cont. regardless of the fact that the majority of ticket buyers from today's generation are women, hollywood is not going to see change for some time. i don't agree with it, and i'm not happy that that's how it works, but it is...
He mentioned a seconded Avatar movie! How do you audition to be apart of the second movie? I really would like to be in the movie! Is he recruiting extras?
I fear from seeing one of the trailers and the stern look on Iroh's features suggests he is going be instead a wise, but stern and cold teacher to Zuko- instead of the wise yet playful, warm, laidback, companion that brings balance into Zuko's life with his uplighting and light-hearted humor and nature. Since Iroh's my favorite character, I care about these things ^_~
I can't wait for this movie! I hope Uncle Iroh still has his laid back gentle humor in the movie, its really a big part of his character throughout the series. The times of Iroh being serious is not that often, and clearly the soft, laid back, and light hearted attitude is his natural state even in the midst of drama surrounding him. Any other side of him is always a momentary state.
Wait, the first movie is darker than the series, and he's still gonna make it edgier and darker as the series moves on? I'd like to see how that plays out: instead of energybending, Aang can just tear off Ozai's limbs to take his bending away. 0_0
at least introducing new characters will give them anoppotunity to show off wot they can do and i think that was a nice thing to do for making a film n plus help themto make it big in the filminducstry :D especially for aang n katara anyway xP
@ultranovajoe sorry they aren't gonna be keeping the cabbage guy n plus they aint got toph anymore bcos they culdnt find a "toph" (a lil girl) n so now the haru the earthbending boy will be renamed to toph :(
@ibushrai that really sucks about the cabbage merchant, but i wouldn't be too sure toph will be replaced, since she doesn't appear until Book 2, and this movie will only cover Book 1, so there's still a couple years before they need to reach a decision
@mayhem9024 i kno, but i seriously didnt see the part where he sed april fools! and i watched that update like 5 times, n the updates i watched from was froma guy named jeff or summin n he does good updates, but that trick he played was mean but smart, so yah that was my bad, i did have a heart attack wen he updated it so yah sorry about that n dont worry next tym i will do more digging to be sure =]
@ibushrai that's stupid get your facts the kid is haru they will have a little girl because the sequel is two years away so why cast now ? when you don't have it released.
I've been rooting for this line for a while: PLEASE tell me he put in "This is Katara, my flying sister." from the first episode! That would make my day :)
@jemimahrg yeah i know. but i didn't expect him to understand it that much. i thought he'd just be like, " oh i like the fighting and story, let's make a movie"
@xxstealerxx yeah well anti casters don't realize hes a fan a mega fan he loves the story and the aspects but ask any of them about this interview and they say he's fake.
gosh, haters...

If you can't even explain why you believe something is "not bad", don't say it.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 I have explained it. Several times. It has no effect on the mindset of children or the general public. This is comparable to the psychological study of political socialization. When somebody is exposed to media they are not magically forced into a mindset promoted by that medium. A person is much more likely to adopt the mindset of those they are around. And how does it create a stereotype of any kind? It doesn't make any race look good or bad.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 Unless you can explain studies done that prove how TV doesn't affect the mindset of children, I beg to differ. Developmental Psychology studies at the University of Michigan, studies with Roberts, Rideout, Foehr, McDonough, and others that point to how TV DOES have an affect. Even the American Academy of Pediatrics, Committee on Public Education have done studies that find a pattern. Like I said, prove it or shut up.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 What is rather interesting is that you claim i didn't explain the study. Then you say there are studies that DO prove it, yet you don't explain them. Anybody smell a hypocrite?
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 Hah! Hypocrite? Why do I have to try and find them? If you want to use that in your argument, I've got four words for ya: YOU go find them.
Otherwise, I'm going to have to call bull on you.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 Once again, I could tell you EXACTLY the same thing. Watch. I've got four words for ya: YOU go find it. Otherwise, I'm going to have to call bull on you. See? Am I the only one who sees the hypocritical actions you're displaying? I never said you had to find anything. I simply called you out on the fact that you said i didn't explain the study i mentioned, while you didn't explain the studies you mentioned. That is hypocrisy.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 No, because I provided evidence that backed MY argument. If you want to argue the other way, YOU need to provide that evidence to back YOUR argument. See how your logic doesn't exactly work...? Have you never written an research essay in your life or something? Why do I need to explain this?
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 You provided no evidence. Show this 'evidence' you speak of. You are arguing with no reason. And that's rather besides the point. The point being you were hypocritical. You did NOT explain any of the studies that you claimed would back you argument while telling me that I didn't do the same thing (hypocritical). You then went on to tell me that I should confirm the studies you proposed for myself while not doing the same for the study i proposed (hypocritical) See where this is going?
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 It's amazing how you don't know how to research. Read back a few posts and I told you the professors, universities, and studies that support my point. You have not listed any. Is this true or not? And don't make up bull to hide this simple yes or no question.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 I mentioned a study on political socialization. More importantly media as an agenda setter. This doesn't focus purely on behavior in the case we've discussed, but the evidence applies because it's the same principle. Maxwell Mccombs, Donald Shaw, and Lazarfield. The studies on the Agenda Setting Theory as a whole dont apply, but the Cognitive Effects Model does. A person has set opinions, media can't change those opinions. People's opinions won't be shaped by this sort of thing.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 OH MY GAWD, that was SO HARD.
...
Finally.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 That was not the point. I simply proved to you evidence for my point and side of the argument existed. I expected a rebuttal, but all I got out of you was a few words that hardly apply to the conversation.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 It took so much effort into even CONVINCING you to provide evidence for your argument, that your lack of common, argumentative sense isn't even worth debating with. Can you imagine if I rebuked what you just said and we go through another fifteen messages with me trying to tell you that you actually need proof to back what you claim?
Puh-lease.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 Wow, this tells me nothing. Do you NOT want people to see things your way? Wasn't that the whole point of you arguing in the first place?
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 "Tells you nothing"...my point exactly. No matter what I say, you can't seem to comprehend it. Maybe I'm using words that are too complicated for you to understand--who knows? I wonder if you even understand what I'm typing right now.
//end sarcasm
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 Once again. It tells me nothing. It seems like a simple excuse to prevent you from backing up your side of the argument. Which is what I thought you wanted to do. You said it was so important to you. Apparently not.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 And you've become so repetitive with your "tells me nothing" slogan that a broken record sounds more interesting. I've effectively backed my claims right off the bat; you took a legion of upwards of fifteen posts just to make one point. Yes, or no? Don't even try not answering the question, or evading it with vague excuses.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 No, I made plenty of points. However, that is STILL irrelevant. You're the one who had such a self-righteous position on the matter. And now you've merely resorted to taking jabs at me which aren't going to get you anywhere.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 You made points without proving them; it is completely relevant, because we are supposed to be in a debate, and if one side doesn't know how to even prove a point, then it's pointless.
The fact you even said "resorted" to taking jabs proves your immaturity. If you're so interested in debating, why haven't you made a point of discussion all this time? Does it only rely on me to make the debate? There IS NO debate. "getting you anywhere"--please. Go get yourself somewhere first.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 I DID prove my points. And after I did prove it, you just dropped it. That also has nothing to do with my level of maturity. It was yet again just taking another jab, as well as your ending statement. You made such a huge deal out of this whole thing and right after I prove one point you decide to drop it. I'm wondering why. And don't give me any of that "You're too immature to comprehend anything I've said." Oh also, you saying "pleas. Go get yourself somewhere first."... Immature
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 And you seem to be very avid to make your own points, or else you would have stopped posting already--so why have you not made your own point? Like I said, why don't you get yourself somewhere first before pointing fingers. Sheesh.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 I don't care to make any more points. I simply want a rebuttal.
Spideyfan117 1 year ago
@Spideyfan117 And I just don't want to stop posting because...it's funny. lol

Why is the "neutral" or "relatable" race always apparently Caucasian?
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 honestly? because western civilization has become dominant in today's world. eastern asia has become more and more westernized throughout history instead of the other way around...
Hrairoo53 1 year ago
@Hrairoo53 Wow...you're a case of western superiority if I ever saw one. I mean, after all, the martial arts exhibited in this movie were surely a western influence on eastern culture, and that's what makes it okay for Caucasian people to not have the ability to relate to people of other races. (please note that this is heavy sarcasm).
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 ?? relax, dude... i'm not trying to say i support this, i was simply explaining a fact. unless you want to disagree that Europe has had an impact on asia in the last 500 years?
you asked why caucasians are considered the neutral/relatable race in the media, and i just proposed a reason. as an asian who watches a lot of movies, i don't think caucasians should be a 'default' race, but in hollywood, that's just the way it is. hollywood markets its movies to a white, young adult audience
Hrairoo53 1 year ago
@Hrairoo53 Asians have as much of an impact on western society than the other way around. That's why I don't agree with that argument. And why can't white, young adult audiences relate to young adults of other apparent ethnicities? I think that is a degrading view of the audience. That also disregards the fact that ultimately, we are ONE RACE--human.
reket1990 1 year ago
@reket1990 i agree with you, however, culturally, modern asia has become far more westernized rather than the other way around. no one denies that, same as no one denies the influence asia has on the west, socially, technologically, etc...
i believe young adult whites can and do relate to other ethnicities, however, hollywood is very conservative with its money. its reasoning is that it has always targeted young, white males and will continue to do that as long as it makes money.
Hrairoo53 1 year ago
@reket1990 cont. regardless of the fact that the majority of ticket buyers from today's generation are women, hollywood is not going to see change for some time. i don't agree with it, and i'm not happy that that's how it works, but it is...
Hrairoo53 1 year ago
@Hrairoo53 And that's why we need to hit their pockets. Then, and only then, will they change.

DelicateMelodies 1 year ago
@DelicateMelodies He is wise dude they confirmed it go on the website and go to firenation
shamwow56 1 year ago
@DelicateMelodies
Indeed you are correct. He wasn't stern though. But he wasn't warm :(
Neither was Sokka.
Or Aang.
OR ANYONE ELSE! :(
ashleeamazing 1 year ago
I can't wait for this movie! I hope Uncle Iroh still has his laid back gentle humor in the movie, its really a big part of his character throughout the series. The times of Iroh being serious is not that often, and clearly the soft, laid back, and light hearted attitude is his natural state even in the midst of drama surrounding him. Any other side of him is always a momentary state.
DelicateMelodies 1 year ago
Wait, the first movie is darker than the series, and he's still gonna make it edgier and darker as the series moves on? I'd like to see how that plays out: instead of energybending, Aang can just tear off Ozai's limbs to take his bending away. 0_0

@ibushrai that really sucks about the cabbage merchant, but i wouldn't be too sure toph will be replaced, since she doesn't appear until Book 2, and this movie will only cover Book 1, so there's still a couple years before they need to reach a decision
