i've bought his car today as it's my birthday, so decided to treat myself!!! yes i'm Russian, therefore I've already mastered the get away moves hahahahhahaha ;)
Is it? It's made in the UK. The 1st new Mini was designed in the UK. The car's success employs tems of thousands of people in the UK so I don't think you should really be cracking up at that.
Ah, OK. I had heard that that engine was the cheapest 4 cylinder produced at the time as possible didn't have all the gubbins on it (variable exhaust cam, variable lift etc) but I'd have to look that up.
Well, of course you're entitled to your opinion BUT I think you have rose-tinted glasses on. The Issi Mini WAS good for many years back in the '60s & '70s but it's 2008 now and the rest of the orld has more than moved on. That Mini wouldnt stand a chance in crash for example. Look, it had it's day but car designs (I'm a vehicle engineer) have to move with the times and legislation.
You're missing the point. When the (original/real) Mini was introduced it broke ground. Its engine layout, its handling, its space saving design. It won the Monte Carlo rally, it blitzed bigger engined cars because of its amazing handling. It was the car that all others copied. the new mini is just another Euro hatch. Its a cynical exploitation of the original. they just made a big bloated ugly dull car. It's an insult to the real Mini
Well, what small ground breaking cars are about today? Audi A2 - flopped. Smart Fortwo - hardly a roaring success. You have to build and sell what people want to buy. I know many die-hard Issigonis Mini fans that like the BMW Mini alot so you really must appreciate that your views are not absolute.
Yes I agree cars have to sell. I don't have anything against the new Mini as a car I just object to it being called Mini. It isn't a Mini. You can't replace icons. They should have called it something else. Besides, the real Mini was mini, the new mini is big fat & bloated
I much prefer the original Golf Gti. The later models gained weight & lost character but at least they were a natural progression. The new Mini is just a marketing exercise. BMW ripped off the look but threw everything else away. If you like the new Mini, that's fine but I just wished they'd called it something else. It just isn't a Mini, in my eyes
Indeed, the BMW Mini did throw the rest of the Issi. Mini's design features away, like 4 cylinder transverse engine, wheel at each corner. Oh, hang on.
The reason there was such a leap between the two Mini was because BL never had any money to replace it in the late '60s, when it should have been and then again in te '70s & '80s & '90s. There were many proposals over the years but they were never made. No cash.
You miss the point. The Mini was so far ahead of its time, it didn't need replacing. Look! Every modern hatch is a copy of the original Mini but that's my point, they're all copies. The real/original Mini didn't imitate other cars. Why don't BMW think outside the box & come up with something new? You're obsessed with restrictions, limitations & paperwork. That's why you like the new Mini. It's safe (in a design sense). It's the motoring equivalent of my granny's toaster. It's a huge yawn.
The Issi. Mini DID need replacing by the early '80s. It gave us the transverse engine, FWD had been around years before that. I'm not obsessed with restrictions etc. I'm a powertrain design analyst, these are the "givens". We often see styles from felt tip fairies that look good but are completely unrelaistic from a manufacturing/legis. point of view. No car will have the impact of the Issi. Mini because the bar has already been set. The Issi. Mini ws really just UK's VW Beatle.
I know what you mean about the Mini being Britain's Beetle but I don't think the Beetle ever had the dynamics of the Mini. The Mini was great because of what it did as well as what it represented. It was a shopping car that (unintentionally) because a race car. It was classless too. How many cars can you say that about these days?
I can assure you that in 30 years time, people wont look back at todays mini & be amazed at its forward thinking, iconic image & pure genius. That's because its just another bland euro hatch. The original mini broke new ground, the new mini is just a cheap imitation that treads water. It's a vauxhall corsa in a party frock, a pretender to the throne, a Walter Mitty.
The REAL Mini was/is an icon. You think of The Italian Job (original), The swinging sixties, Twiggy, Mary Quant, The Beatles. It even had a skirt named after it for God's sake. The new Mini is just another bland modern car that drives well but has no soul. It's just another restricted car strangled by regulations. They should have called it something else. It's NOT a Mini! It's also butt ugly
Nah, it didn't have a skirt named after it. The skirt, like the car, was small. They just used the same adjective.
What you have to remember is that car companies (OEMs) make cars to make money. Nothing else. In that respect, the Issi Mini failed for many years where as the BMW is a roaring success. I'm a great BL fan (TR6, PI, SD1) but try to be realistic about what they really were.
It IS a Mini as that's what's written on the back. Many, including me, like its looks.
Incorrect! The skirt WAS named after the Mini car. I'm not concered with statistics & figures, I'm talking about design, soul & character. The new Mini my be a success but so are Hotpoint washing machines. If a new band came out & called themselves the Beatles, would you consider them the equal of John, Paul, George & Ringo? The name on the boot is just a piece of metal put there by the marketing boys. A cynical business move

I hate the new Mini. I think it's vile & an insult to the original Mini.

So do you have the same issues with an '08 Golf GTi in comparing it against the Golf 1 GTi?
