  • summer solstice garcia in tune with the universe thanks and respect always jerry x

  • I love it when Jery forgets the words.....

  • I have to say, I think it's very sad how Jerry's life ended. He went into "Rebab." in 1995 and died among strangers. With all due respect to Lesh and Weir I think their "intervention" was totally fucked! Jerry should have been left to do what he pleased. He should have died natually, of a heart attack laying in bed beside his wife, not in a Rebab. center. Sad to think that he died at 4am, alone. Just my 2 cents, but as Frank Sinatra said so well, " You die your way, and I'll die mine."

  • @Supertramp1966 I agree with you to an extent. If anything I would say their intervention was too late. I believe jerry should have died around loved ones but lesh and weir were just looking out for a friend. If you read some of their interviews you would realize how much the heroin use took over his life. I am not against an individual choosing to use drugs and not hurting anyone but who knows what jerry could have done with a few more years in the tank.

  • Haha i saw them playing 4 weeks ago in the netherlands in My village xD

  • Super Schluss;-)

  • Happy Birthday Jerry.....RIP

  • Fuck that drummer was totally out of rythm, have respect for the band, man but the drummer sucked in this concert!

  • @briantomas Dude the drummer is flowing perfectly with Phish(if you didn't know he's the bassist), so please shut the fuck up and don't criticize any musician unless you've played or tried that instrument yourself. Have a nice day.

  • God, if you give us back Jerry Garcia then you can have that Justin Beiber chick, that Lady Gaga dude, Taylor Swift, Miley Cyrus, and Kanye West.

  • @ThatKrookedVulture Jerry was often stoned, out of tune etc. but on his WORST day he was 10 times better than all the "artists" you mention put together..RIP Jerry.

  • @ridingroy Yeah, Jerry fuckin' rules. Now he's up there jammin' and smokin' a bowl with the angels.

  • @ThatKrookedVulture why would God give us a goldmine in exchange for a wheelbarrow of dog shit? I think he's smarter than that... unfortunatly.

  • i was there in teh outside crowd

    so good

  • Its hard to feel for the young when music (i meen art) like this is overlooked or spat upon

  • @starbearshoreline nobody could do that and have any idea of what was going on. so sad.

  • This is a great post-82, non-studio version of "Grey" Jerry's voice sounds good, healthy happy having fun, rippin some good licks from Tiger, and the endearing lyric mixups. Perfect Jerry. you will Survive always RIP

  • Check out the version from Hartford in March of '87. It's unreal!

  • Listen to Touch of Gray tucked between Watchtower & Heavens Door w/ Bob Dylan next door at Oakland Collisium in '87 equals err supercedes the Great Dylan and no other Band or song except a Hunter / Garcia tandom could this be said. God Bless you jerry. Thank You Grateful Dead, Roll On Forever!

  • I saw them at Shore line in either May or June of 93. I miss Jerry

  • This certainly takes us back to a better time.

  • Bass is too loud in mix.

  • Good ol' Jerry and the boys with what would be their bigggest ''commercial'' success in this tune. Amazung, considering their incredible careers. Of course, ''commercial '' sucess never meant alot to theGD...which is one of the great things about this band. Great tune...thanks for posting it.

  • @bugeyes455858 I have seen this statement made by so many in so many different ways. I gree.

  • Don't forget to miss Brent Midland too he was so nasty on Keys.

  • His guitar is one the absolute sweetest sounds....

  • Hard to believe it has been almost 15 years since his passing...*sigh*...Rest in peace, Jerry. Thanx for the gift of bestowing your talent and good-nature upon us.

  • Did anyone else notice that it seemed like Jerry forgot the lyrics at about 3:53?

  • Jerry Garcia = coolest guy ever

  • nice to see the old guy smiling

  • Rip Jerry

  • Bob. He wears pants now sometimes? I saw him once in a pair of Jeans maybe Humpreys. My first impression was, "wow, i've never seen that, pants on bob? whoa they must be too expensive for him!" - Yes, that's it - the extra material, lol! : ) I remember thinking where does he shop (or buy jeans?) Yes, it's pretty much a head fuck!

  • @jacxx2222 Even tho the rent is in arrears. . . the dog has not been fed in years. . . R.I.P. JERRY We all love you so much. .. see you in heaven

  • Holy crap - that was 20 years ago. Hellfire! I remember them 40 years ago (Oh, sh*t!)......the 700 Club. :o

  • I can't believe it either. I turned 37 recently and I've been sort of in shock about it since September.

  • Yeah... a touch of grey...

  • I was there with my son to celebrate his 18th b'day.

  • @Riv0606 its heartwarming to hear u say that, ive been to 10 Dead/Further shows with my dad. ive never seen the greatful dead because i was born in '97.

  • I was here loving EVERY MINUTE!!!

"DEAD ON THE DUMP" If you know, you know!!!!!!

    wu- hoo

  • "I know the rent is in arrears

The dog has not been fed in years

It's even worse than it appears

    but it's all right."

Jerry smiles throughout, but especially as he sings this verse. The man battled his demons. Thank God for Hunter giving Jerry these words to give him relief, even if for just a few moments.

This is a fine video ~

Jerry we miss you something terrible !

  • That was a great show!!!

  • i love when it's still light out when shows start... usually by the second set it's dark and the band really gets into it.

  • what a tight concert

    the dead at their best

    thanks for posting

  • but Dad...its the Dead! :)

  • That's the whole point. They're all about the music. Nothing more, nothing less.

  • Right on !

  • Thanks for posting and your words. Take me back to Shoreline and roll me down the hill. Great to see Jerry smiling and raising the roof. Yeah they miss a beat, yeah Bobby was done before Jerry, but it's fun, and there's nothing like a Grateful Dead show.

  • Well, From 1987 to 1993, I was a Bluecoat at shoreline amp. For those who don't know what a Bluecoat is..I was security. We worked directly for Bill Graham. R.I.P Bill AND Jerry AND Brent! I was at this show working and enjoyed it big time. I always had a good time with all the deadheads!

  • Jerry was jovial at this show when he grins its good.

  • And even after "death," Jerry still survives ...on more than one level.

  • your comment gave me chills. im not even a big fan but I like this song

  • Thank you, Big Entertainment Capitalists, for deleting the video in which they all turn into skeletons. I've got your next bailout right here.

  • Thank you Jerry. GD forever!!!

  • You may not believe this but it takes a alan key

  • dummy.its an allen wrench!!!

  • love this - I think I was actually at this concert!

  • me too-did we party or what!?

  • They need to dig up ol' Jerry and go out on there post-mortum tour...use the same technology from this music video and I guarentee that people will show up.

  • Rather sick....but Jerry was cremated

  • @Warriorstrail His Ashes Were Thrown Among This Earth Witch He Blessed With His Music, And telling Us That WE WILL GET BY

  • @doddsino we gonna dig brent up too

  • This is freaking me out a little bit. I was there.

  • jerry smiles a lot on this, i love it...makes me feel good..

  • : )

  • Thank you for sharing.

    Cupertino, Ca

  • This seems to be one of the performances Jerry had a smile on his face in the later years. R.I.P Jerry

  • P.S. Jerry sounds like he's on a respirator.

  • Please, don't be afraid to say your true feelings. LOL......but to your credit....it did appear the one of the drummers did make a slight error at the time you stated, and a few seconds earlier as well. Good ear by the way. I missed that.

  • it gets more difficult with each day that passes to escape for a moment from the outside world, does it not? thank you for posting this and for your words

  • all of em

  • i love that man

  • Nearly 20 years later, I saw this same tune played at the same place last night. It was a sweet, sweet version too - the last encore of the night.

  • It was amazing! my first dead show ever!!!!! It changed my life- I can't even explain it in words. I want to go this Thursday!!! IF ANYONE IS HEADING TO SEE THEM AT SHORELINE FROM THE FRESNO AREA PLEASE EMAIL ME THRU YOUTUBE- I NEED A MIRACLE... peace 2 u, jenn

  • i got your miracle!! would you like a copy of this whole concert? plus the set break in the vending area. just hit me up and ill hook ya up!

  • Gotta love you, I would love a copy of this concert- you're awesome- thanks for the miracle- life is just too good- let me know what I need to do. peace, jenn

  • Darn It, I should have seen this earlier. Had a caravan going from Fresno. Could of got ya in. First show here huh. This was about my tenth. I worked next door to the shoreline, in the navy at Moffett Field. Those big ass hangars were home to me, now sitting in Clovis remanisin

  • cant wait to see them there tonight!

  • I hitchhiked to San Fran in 1977, just from Vallejo, and Jerry's cousin picked me and my friend and gave us some pizza bread, she was a good person, so I respect him a lot.

  • The Dead started from the acid tests, there were any and all drugs at Dead shows and everyone was free to do whatever they wanted, that being said Jerry caused alot of young people to pick up heroin, not his fault, but he found a drug he loved, he couldnt stop, drugs were a major part of the scene in those days lsd was legal, but all who use hard drugs makes that choice for themselves I went to 35 + shows but I stayed away from the hard stuff, then a few years later the crack got me a bit!

  • Sod the drugs this is MUSIC and music how its was meant to be played. No need to rabbit on about that crap just focus on the mucic. .

  • I think his weight problems had a lot more to do with his death than heroin. He ballooned up to 300 pounds at one point, and every person I've ever heard of who did that died in their 50s. The body just can't take it.

But the real problem was the incessant touring. He couldn't take it anymore, not physically or creatively, but the juggernaut was too strong for him. Everyone wanted the money, and put their desires first. That's the really sad thing.

  • Are you saying that Jerry only toured for the money? Dude, he toured for the love of music and the fans.

  • heroin is extremely addictive but besides that there are much worse things for someones health. I think your probably right

  • During the time when the yippies were touting a pig for president (pigasus) heroin was just coming onto the scene. Back then knowledge about sharing needles and whatnot just wasn't an issue, or didn't seem like one; like it is today.

A lot of the kids were sharing needles and contracted Hep C. Including Stu Albert (yippie master), on a trip down to new mexico. (also around when kesey was charged with being a hippie). It attacks the liver. Every silver lining has a touch of gray. I'm no better.

  • Comment removed

  • I loved this song..I loved the Dead and was so sad when Garcia died..so senseless

  • bobby looks like fabio

  • Thanks for posting. I don't know much about him but he looks so warm, like a grandfather. This song made me realize that rock is not only for the strong.

  • Just listen to the music, if you want to know about him.......

  • I've just spent over an hour toggling between your posts from the Shoreline show and the Annotated lyrics...I saw this show as pay per view and loved it. You've brought back so many great memories.

    Thanks!

  • I will get by, ohyeah...

  • you can tell jerry cleaned himself up a little bit aroudn this time he sounded great, look at him smiling. I think if Brent hadn't died Jerry might not have gotten back on heroin and the Grateful Dead might be touring today with this lineup instead of The Dead

  • Yea...but who do you think got Brent into Herion? Perhaps that is why he went to pots not soon after Brent died. Just my opinion....but a valid one.

  • Yes Jerry was playing great in summer '89, but I wouldn't assume he was totally clean of junk. In any case, he died from a heart attack; I often wonder if he'd be around if he'd had bypass surgery, and changed his diet and exercised a bit. I guess you don't think of fitness when you are high! But, remember that William Burroughs lived to more than 80, and was still using.

Also, I caught one of these June '89 Shoreline shows, and it was tremendous. I sure miss the big guy.

  • it didnt help that he was touring almost nonstop with the dead and still playing with jgb. and anyone else.

my opinion, if he woulda quit with the dead for a little he would still be here, stronger than ever.

  • or even a break every so often

  • awesome post!!!

  • Love it! Thanks for the memories!

  • amazing jerry
