Oh, thank you for posting this! It came out the summer of 1968 and I LOVED it then! I have it on an old, warped 45! :D But now I can listen to it on my computer!
I remember hearing this on AM radio in '68 or '69. It was a minor hit for a couple of months and then disappeared and became largely forgotten. I just recently found out The Zombies originally did it.
And I don't know what to say. I'm flabbergasted that this song is so much better than any released in the last decade (pretty much anyway). Zombie-ish organ .. it would have been better to go harder guitar solo ?
I loved Larry Norman and the others in the group...too bad the others got involved in Scientology...but Larry found Jesus and did a lot of composin after that and has left behind a great legacy of music glorigying God! RIP Larry David Norman!

i'm gonna see and hear this video again...it's been a while...i just read all the notes going back 4 years ago! the main message i get is that a person chooses to listen to themusic they like and tend to gravitate to what "makes them happy." Larry would agree that music was first created to glorify and please God but it also please our senses as we were created by God to enjoy God in ALL things.
I remember this song when it came out, but the Zombies wrote it and I believe did a more "intense" job of performing it....along with other songs they wrote and performed. Check them out here on YouTube and see...... ;-)
This isi my fav Larry Norman vocal and I thought when I first heard it I thought it really rocked. It still does. Larry's voice was great (I'm sure it does and is even better with Jesus in heaven). Great organ solo. It's just one of those simple yet profound songs. Rest in God's peace, Larry. I can't wait to meet you after Jesus in HIs kingdom.
I had dinner with Larry Norman back in 1986 in Thousand Oaks, CA. He was even hard to communicate at that time as he said he was having trouble with his brain after hitting his head on the ceiling of an airplane. A very interesting guy to say the least.

Musical genius? It's relative. Example, Hang on Sloopy a McCoys hit was originally My Girl Sloopy by the Vibrations. Music penned by Bert Russell, a mambo music fan that borrowed the riff from the old cuban rhumba masters of the 40's. Lyrics refer to a jazz pianist Dotty Sloop who performed in gay club on Bourbon St. Nowadays Rick Derringer re-lives his McCoy days on 'em oldies revival shows. I doubt he or his fans have a clue of it's origen. We could go on and on... I Love You was and is cool!

I had to look this song up when I heard it on the Grammys tonight. They said Larry Normna invented Christian Rock. I had never heard of the guy, but I sure recognized the song. Lear something new every day.

again thanks for the memories that the peoples sound evokes
Larry Norman and The People were separately inducted into the San Jose Rocks Hall of Fame last Friday night. Larry, whom I knew in high school, is sadly in very poor health from what I hear is heart disease. The People did "I Love You" and two others, and Larry did three songs by himself.
Last night, I went to the San Jose Rock and Roll Hall of Fame second annual induction ceremony. The People was inducted, as was Larry separately. The members of People hadn't played together for thirty-nine years! They did three of their hits. When Larry appeared on stage, it was shocking. He walked slowly, and looked like Johnny Winter. I learned he has a very weak heart. He could still sing and play guitar. He sang three songs, and did a little proselytizing.
In 1957, Tony Bennett made a film for the song "Stranger In Paradise" that was shown on TV stations in the US and UK. The term "music video" is said to have been coined by "The Big Bopper" in 1959.
There were plenty of "videos" made in the '60's..there just wasn't any place to play them..we were lucky if we got to see our favorite bands on Ed Sullivan or Dick Clark. The youth of today could never comprehend it..you are SO lucky!
"The People" were an important part of the San Jose music scene in the late 1960s. Along with others i.e. The Syndicate of Sound, (Hey Little Girl) and The Count Five.(Pshycotic Reaction)Thier first Capitol Album "I love You" contained the very first Rock Opera Ever! That's right, even before the Who's Tommy. It is called "The Epic" and is the story of a Dragon Slayer. The People were WAY ahead of thier time. What a shame Larry Norman resigned following a dispute with the record company.
Larry left the band because several of the menbers were into scientology and they required him to embrace it as well. Since scientology conflicted with his christianity he decided to leave the band.
It's weird how music went from "I Love You" to "I Hate You " in about 30 years. It's weird how technology is getting better and people are getting I think, worse.

It's a good song, but it imitates the Zombies' original almost note-for-note.
Ah, well, Larry spent a whole career imitating other peoples' music, so that shouldn't be a surprise.

Is it just me or is it almost beyond comprehension that they made a music video in 1960something?

In 1957, Tony Bennett made a film for the song "Stranger In Paradise" that was shown on TV stations in the US and UK. The term "music video" is said to have been coined by "The Big Bopper" in 1959.

There were plenty of "videos" made in the '60's..there just wasn't any place to play them..we were lucky if we got to see our favorite bands on Ed Sullivan or Dick Clark. The youth of today could never comprehend it..you are SO lucky!

The video is a bit sped up, but I'm sure that's just cause it's old. This was just a stepping stone for Norman.

These were called promotionals back in the late 50s and 60s. This is from 1968 and there were quite a few before this one.
