  • Your Video Is Very Useful Sharing This 1 minute clip from Micheal Porter is a must see for each of us to learn what strategy really is

  • Why do there have to be so many different definitions of strategy......

  • 'Like' if David Orton (Strategy Lecturer) from De Montfort University, Leicester bought you here.

  • The Speaker says: "The steps we take are not the strategy," just look at the definition of strategy in the dictionary to discover that the speaker confuses the definition of (goal or goals) with-strategy. A strategy is a set of systematically planned actions that take time out for a particular purpose.

  • @TebanBrinx I think a strategy is best thought of as a 'theory of the firm'. These are the constraints that you are going to work within that define you as a company. Thus LVMH revenue strategy is low volume, high margin whilst Wal-Mart is high volume, low revenue.

Your definition is the definition of a plan.

I dare say a Harvard Prof knows more about strategy than referring to a commonal garden dictionary. In fairness, he doesn't even get a chance to explain the two other limitations...

  • we all know what is strategy but not all of us can success on his strategy

  • Thanks for the lectures , it has given me some ideas about strategy

  • GENIUS! people demand products, because they have something they need, because of the competitive advantage

  • it great -microadvert

  • „consciously intended course of action, […] set of guidelines to deal with a situation”

he was rather talking about corporate strategy than strategy

  • He was correct with the ACTIONS are not STRATEGIES!

    BUT -

He described GOALS and called them STRATEGY. Hey folks, this ain't right either. Strategy is the BROAD PLAN to attain the GOAL of say "finding our unique niche in the marketplace."

BUT - this is such a small clip, what else did he say?

  • @phillnovaskill he didnt state goals- He didnt say 'strategy is to attain competitive advantage', he said strategy is the way we are going to attain competitive advantage. Hence, not the end goal of competitive advantage only.

  • That was really well done. I am glad I got to see that.

  • such trategy hahahahahahah soooo funyyy right here is the massie

  • yeah, what are the two other mistakes?

As I studied engineering, I am very used to listen or read very informative thing. otherwise, bullshit. He is not explaining anything NEW so we can love this video. Of course it is my opinion only

  • Another know-it-all professor with his two hands snug inside his pockets delivering 1hr lectures on subtle differences between A and a.

  • brilliant professor. Simple, focused and useful!

Does anyone know where can I get some films of Porter talking about his ideas? Like the Diamond Model movie that he made, describing telecommunications in Ohio, flowers production in Netherlands, Shoes in Italy, etc. Thank u

  • My strategy is to collect truth so I can work with reality. Some people :)

  • I believe you should have a right to say what you believe, because I don't want to trust liars.

  • Ugh... too many buzz words. Too much discussion of subtle differences. Just another pointy-haired boss just blabbering nonsense that sounds good.

  • Doing something in order to have advantage. I like simple things.

  • Uniqueness, advantage, and sustainability are foci of strategy.

  • This is a good definition of the difference between tactics and strategy. Strategy is more generally your medium and long range market positioning whereas tactics are the things you do to get there. Tactics are reviewed for effectiveness toward the strategy, and strategy is reviewed for effectiveness in the marketplace. Listen to me like I'm telling you something when you have this much more well-spoken Harvard Phd here. Not trying to 1 up ne1, just thought it might reiterate Mr.Ps point.

  • Porter is of course undisputed management guru but I personally like more Costas Markides's clear definition of what strategy is:

    - WHAT is your service or product?

    - WHOM do you target it?

    - HOW do you differentiate yourself from competition?

If you can answer these in a straigthforward way, you have defined your strategy.

  • Genius!

  • What are the 2 other mistakes?????
