Something that I find curious is that this is not the first time that 1/125 has been recommended as a shutter speed for model photography in a studio with lighting. Is there some graph or correlation data that is commonly used?
@fullofdogshift it really doesn't matter what shutter speed is used , it does not effect the exposure when using flash. too low of a speed can contribute to exposing to available light, and too hight of a speed will not allow the flash to sync. so generally anywhere from 100 to 250 is ok
Hi i was wondering what you would suggest for portable power? everyone has told me to get the vagabond or the explorer xt se but was wondering what your opinion was
Shame your video was not W/B before you started. Your walls look blue and the gold reflector I thought was silver to start with... and suck on old EOS come on its past it for pro work now.
@devonmale69 Who cares. This video offers a lot of good tips and has incredibly detailed instructions. Does it really matter that the video W/B was off?
wow im so glad i found this channel, this video is so perfected to what i wanted to know and learn. :) im hoping to do my own black and white photography, with a black screen
I am a student photographer, and I loved the simplicity of you video. the model was exquisite period. I am glad you mention iso,ss,ap and lenses...however the light setting is what tto lear..when to use umbrills vs strobes etc..if you can a video like that I be the first in line. yes, this video helps me to learn by watching u.....great job...peace !!
The gold reflector gives poor unnatural skin tone depending on skin type, we stopped using as it gave an unnatural colour cast. A shot can be warmed up in Photo shop with more accuracy if needed. Beautiful model!
Wow... she looked luminous with the gold reflection! I loved the close shots at the end, the way the light illuminated her face was gorgeous! Thanks for these tips. :)
Thanks for posting this. I've been struggling with lighting and such. You have helped make things clear to me in this vid. I will save this one for future reference. Thanks again
Nice video. One tip I just wanted to add regarding the use of gold reflectors. Many photogs like the warmth of gold, but the use of such colored reflectors results in the highlight side having one color tone and the shadow side having a different tone. IMHO the best solution is to use a white or silver reflector, and then warm up the entire image in post-processing for a more natural and uniform look.
@Graffight The strobes for the first shots gave off much more light and a faster shutter sync speed so he could lower the ISO to 100. There was less light to work with using just natural light. He would have lost two stops of light had he kept the camera on ISO 100. By bumping the ISO to 400 (making the sensor more sensitive to light) he was able to obtain a suitable shutter speed for hand held captures while maintaining the aperture he wanted which was enough to soften the background.
@Graffight Because he was shooting at a relatively lower light level and wanted to keep the shutter speed as fast as possible to be able to hold the camera hendheld.
Her hairline is on the top of her head! =0

@LearnMyShot Cool! In fact, I think my camera does not allow unlimited variation of shutter speed and your answer explains why.

beautiful shots, beautiful model, chapeau!!
One question: how can you shoot at 1/250 second?
Sync speed with canon cams is 1/200 second , with the RF transmission even lower -- at least i thought so ...

a question on the photo shown in min9:53... with f5.6, what was your focusing point? Thanks
Supiripanto 9 months ago
@Supiripanto focusing point was "lips" so lips and the eye (the one closer to the lens) would be in focus....

why did he use the ISO 400 insted of 100 for those final head shots?
Graffight 1 year ago
@Graffight , most likely natural light coming from the window was not strong enough for desired exposure.
