Thank you for taking the time to demonstrate this procedure.
BUT! I am impatient...it took you forever to explain something simple. Techies are forever trying to use up as much air as possible to salute their own genius.
I hope some of you folks will watch my video responses to see how much easier it is to swap out a hard drive on a PC. My system is trayless. No silly sleds or trays to attach.
KP you keep making refrence to PC's in your videos and comparing them to Mac's. Whn infact you Mac Pro is also a PC. PC =personal computer ...DOH! And cartridge is not only for MAC's I have 8 drive bays in my case which are a lot easier to install drives. in. NO screws to hold the drives. Check out the compressed air showing off there..haha
Dude those hard drives are tough. I got one in an externall HDD form and the screws were VERY tight when Western Digital installed them, and there wasn't any screw glue on them either
But WHEN one of the HDD's fails, you will have to completely re-format, whereas if you were to use RAID 1, you would be paying twice as much for the same amount of space, although your data will be safe.
I recommend using RAID 0, and an external HDD. You get more GBs for the $ that way.
Nice video, really interesting stuff! Like those "out of the box" vids of you. But, with a high quality tower - you can have this experience on any hardware, not only with mac :D Keep up this work!
very nice video, exactly like my system,i see you have got the my book hard drive also,i got it connected by the 800 fire wire, but i am thinking to get the esata seagate hard drive, have you tried any esata on yours, cause i am wondering how to connect them since we don't have any esata external connection,i know that there is a esata connection inside the mac pro and i have located them already, but don't know how to use them, any ideas on how i can get a faster drive?thanks and have a nice day.
well, intel badly designed their motherboard for esata connections. Although they are on the board you have to dig deep on to the mac pro to access them, so I suggest to get a esata pcie card for you mac pro. It's a worthy investment if you plan to use esata drives with your mac pro.
well thanks a lot for your answer, but what kind did you install on your mac pro are they raptor or normal 7200 rpm ones, and is there any problem with them?by the way i saw your video in high quality it was wonderful you can see every little detail in it,what kind of camera do you use?
i am using final cut studio 2,with sony hdr-sr12 camera,i saw one of your test videos and it was wonderful what you did with the mac os,what program did you use and which is better comparing to final cut?
I used final cut, and I think it's the best video editing program I have ever used. If your looking for an alternative I would suggest avid or adobe premiere pro respectivley.
actually i am new to this software, that's why i was asking about hard disk and esata, does your render process became faster when you used esata hard drive?and what brand did you use?
f you can't get a direct Sata connection then the next best thing would be an esata connection, and yes that would improve the rendering time of final cut compared to using a FireWire 800 connection.
yes, I connected the hard drives into the hard drive ports in the mac pro. The SATA connections in the mac pro are the fastest, then the second fastest is the esata interface which you can use by installing an esata PCI express card in the mac pro. I use the sata.

Would it be easy to set up a Windows 7 on one hard drive and then your Mac on another that I installed? Seriously noob question.

At what point does that become easier than installing a new hard drive in a different case?

but then you got to format and partitian it which isn't exactly easy.
Well the same goes for Mac but it's in the form on a wizard.

YAY!! compressed air is awesome
the chances of you frying your drives is minimal, so grounding is unnecessary
just be a little cautious and use common sense

If you want a super fast system, use a RAID-0 (where data is split and stored on both HDs in pieces).
For bigger security (but half the storage/speed), RAID-1 is great.

RAID 0 ftw!

Of course you use "Mac OS Extended (Journaled)"! What else on a 1 TB HD? FAT-16? :D
Well, ZFS isn't available yet, but it will come in Snow Leopard.
