It's easy to see where the idea for "Night of the Living Dead" might have come... Gouls taking over the world! overdone these days, but quite original back then. R. Matheson was a very criative man, thinking ahead of his time.

Essentially the book is a great idea for an end of the world story. The vampire angle although part of the story is a minor affair. The most important side of this is the heroes angst against his former neighbour who every night comes out to taunt him. The 'vampires' as such aren't vampires in the true sense. The whole predicament of this story is caused by germ warfare experiments and the effect they have on the world in general ie the dead come back to life!

@DarklingMagick I beg to differ. The Classic Vampire would easily be able to over-power "Morgan" The Last Man. These creatures are the "Living-Dead" They can't shape-shift into Bats, Wolves nor can they fly . . . What they do share with a vampire is a love of blood, unable to function during the day and can be killed with a stake . . nothing more . . . Not a Vampire Story!

@Diogenes1360 The author, Richard Matheson (who wrote the script to this film) calls it a vampire story.  In the novel they are intelligent, immortal, feed on blood, do NOT decompose.They have fangs.They are warded off by garlic and symbols of religious faith. They can die from being staked. If Not shapeshifting means not a vampire than you should say the same about ice's The Vampire Chronicles.

@Diogenes1360 You can "beg" all you want, that doesn't make you right. The author / script writer calls it a vampire story. It's only in future adaptations that they are zombies or mutants. They don't just drink blood. They're also incredibly strong (They destroy his car), are intelligent (they are forming their own government at the end of the novel), they have emotions. They are vulnerable to sunlight (and then start to develop an immunity in the book), vulnerable to holy objects and garlic.

@sexyLASTninja This one follows the novel better. The reason it's called "I am legend" is he discovers HE is the legend, he is the monster. The vampires are the new people and he's their boogieman. It's a major point to the story which is why the theatrical cut of the Will Smith movie sucks and it's alternate ending is far superior. But they're not mutants or zombies. In the original story by Richard Matheson (who wrote the script to this Vincent Price version) in the novel they're vampires.

I'm doing an essay on Matheson's 'I Am Legend' and although this film is slated it is the truest adaptation of the book. As mentioned there are 2 kinds of vampires: The undead variety and the infected variety. Robert is personified as 'Legend' because he becomes the nightmare for the next generation of man. Other adaptations were 'The Omega Man' in 1971, 'I am Omega' in 2007 one month before Smith's 'I Am Legend' in December 2007. Matheson wrote the screenplay only on Price's version.
