arguably the best game by a fullforward in the history of the game.impeccable kicking for goal, brute strength, speed, speckies, freak goals left and right.never a more complete player when on song
You score points in it just like most other sports in the world u dumb cunt by either kicking it threw the bigger goals for 6 points or the ones next to them for 1 point best athlets in the world u dumb cunt
i remember seeing this game when i was 6, i was a footscray supporter prior to the match, but after the first quarter i was a geelong supporter through and through, no one compared to his brilliance back then.
I was at this game with my Dad & I remember 3 things.
1. Ablett kicking 14 goals 7
2. Paul Salmon kicking 10 goals
3. Steven Alessio blatantly pushing defenders in the back twice before marking the ball and not being penalised for it o nboth occasions in the final quarter which equalled 2 goals cementing Essendon's win. I still remember yelling obscenities at the umpires in that last quarter (back when I was 12) over not penalising Steven Alessio.
i saw this game with my dad when i was about 9 or 10, being a geelong supporter i will remember that game for the rest of my life as the game that gary ablett kicked 14 goals at our end and paul salmon kicked 10 goals at the other end for the bombers and geelong still lost the game by about 3 goals. :-(
There is no debate whatsoever, Snr owns Jnr. Ablett jnr is a fuckn superstar, but forget about it and any other player including the most overrated player of the century wayne carey. Here is the greatest player the game has ever seen.
Agreed. However, the comparison in the media keeps occuring. Despite the fact that they play different styles I personally would choose a 17 year old ablett snr over a 17 year old ablett jnr in the draft.
I also find hilarious the assertion that keeps coming up about wayne carey being the greatest ever, sure he was very fucking good, no denying that. But come on ablett at age 32 and 33 kicking what something like 134 and 123 goals in a season respectively, while carey started to fade at 29.
Carey began to fade at 29, like most elite CHFs do (Brereton was cooked by 26, Tredrea by 27), because of the wear and tear that comes with playing such a physically demanding role. Ablett spent most of his career on a flank before moving to FF late, hence his longevity.
Carey was very, very good. Many people rate him higher than ablett snr which in my opinion is just ludicrous. Ablett snr was kicking 120+ goals a year at 32,33 years old+ carey started to go down hill at 30. Personally if you wanted a player, a forward at the draft i would choose ablett, dunstall and Gary jnr over carey. Im going to get shot down and abused for this one im sure, but i would take a seventeen year old pavlich over carey, just because pav can litterally play anywhere on the ground.
I thought id cop a bit on the pav remark, but i rate pavlich, because to perform consistantly in the manner he does in a side full of losers at freo is amazing. Pav has been All australian in the backline midfield and forward line. No player in the history of the game has had that kind of versitility. And to kick around 70 goals a year while spending some time in the midfield, along with the pittiful delivery freos midfield gives says alot about his ability.
205 DT points. Carey was extremely good. but he did have a very good midfield supplying him and was not really good this side of 99 so he had what 7 years at the top. Ablett, dunstall, pavlich all long term consistant perfomers everyone will differ in thier opinion but i would choose james hird before judd just a difference in opinion i guess
My top 5 draft choices Ablett snr, James hird, Ablett jnr, Pavlich, Dunstall
People dont have to agree with that but those are the guys i would pick
I was lucky enough to be at this game - it was the day i became addicted to footy dragged along by a mate from echuca ( thanks Ben)- i had been here in australia for 5 years (a POM) and was astounded at the speed and athletic ability of these guys esp God. Mate of mine and i went to watch Carlton v Collingwood at the G the next day - textbook boys weekend.thanks for posting the vid. Go Swannies.
i was lucky enough to be at this game. first time i walked out of a game after my cats lost and wasn't too unhappy. his reverse banana was sublime. he was something very special and i feel very lucky i got to see the great man in so many games. not sure if we will see his like again.
Remember seeing on the news that Ablett kicked 14, followed by the result and was shocked. Still can't believe we won that day. Fish was an awesome, awesome FF before he wrapped his leg around Raines. Ablett though...was something else.
Please note: Koutifidis' 99 or was it 2000 season where at one stage he was unstoppable for about 15 games and would have beat them all. Unfortunately, injury cost him.
Ablett & Carey were really the only players who had the excitement to add an 10,000 to an attendance.
This guy would still be a force in todays game. Im a tigers supporter and I was used to him bashing us senseless each time we played them. Geelong at that time were the greatest team never to win a flag, they had the team and the coach they just feel at the last hurdle too many times.
And what an honor it was to see him, Lockett and Dunstall line up for Victoria when they bashed SA at the MCG in the same year. Lockett at fullforward, Dunstall in the pocket and Ablett stuck out on the flank, what an awesome side that was.
yeah...but much better for the goals to be shared amongst a multitude of teammates...Geelong have proved that in '07...best points for in 22 h&a rounds...G.A. senior was a goalkcking freak in his day but the fellow 'catters' then couldn't elevate the side to greatness..that is not being nasty..it is just what happened!
good video. great to see the god kicking ass as usual in his career over defenders and specially over those bomber defenders was good, even when they one the premiership that year. i'd never have a soft-spot for the dons.
I remember these games well. Geelong's whole game plan was to just kick it long to Ablett and hope he marked, which he always did. Paul Salmon for essendon kicked 10 goals as well in this game.
its funny even though its seems not that long the game seems like its being played in slow motion, footy is so much quicker these days. And you don't see those bombs inside 50 so much anymore.
I remember that this was a time when I was 8 years old and I started going to the footy to see the cats that year. This was one of the games that I remember well that I saw on TV.
Haha, I'm a Bulldogs supporter, and I would DREAM to have someone like Ablett on our team! The way the Bulldogs play, he would easily kick 100+ goals :P
will never see this again:
a power forward have 25 kicks, 13 marks and 14 goals 7..
bring back the old days!!
