I was at the LA ARMS concert. Clapton and Beck both blew Page away. Page arranges some amazing solos which sound great but if you listen his playing isn't as tight as Clapton's, especially when you listen to live tracks that haven't been remixed.
Page's solos from Dazed and Confused and Heartbreaker imo are not very good. The timing was off. I saw Led Zeppelin on their first big US tour and Page played poorly. In their second tour he got better but his style was max. notes per second and I've never been impressed by that.
I first heard Clapton live with Blind Faith. Crossroads was amazing. His Cream live solos are clean, crisp & in time. BTW some choices for EC here like Sunshine/Badge/Guitar-Weeps are not his best work.

I have always felt that while Jimi Hendrix is clearly very talented, he still has a "clowning-around" kind of style that kind of disrespects the music sometimes. I'm not always into watching people do cartwheels and somersaults. I like the serious styles of Clapton and Page better and I think they're both much deeper. It's hard for me to judge Page vs Clapton. My own playing and style is more like Page (not that I'm as good!). But I think I like Clapton more. He is totally riveting and personal.

I think you're forgetting something here - Page had with him a little guy called John Paul Jones who wrote most of Zep's complex riffs and arrangements, and Clapton had with him for much shorter a little guy named Jack Bruce who wrote and sang most of Cream's songs.
These two here are prime examples of guitarists who steal credit from their band members.
That said - Clapton is greater as a guitarist, Page is greater as a musician.

@ledzepguitarcovers actually playing sloppy on guitar is an actual style. im sure you probably know that, but page was playing sloppy near the beginning of zep, not just near the end. of course his heroin addiction started catching up to his playing, and eventually he couldn't help but play sloppy because of it.
Along with Jeff Beck both were very influential in the essence of rock can not be compared, Clapton is the soul and virtuosity Jimmy, I hope that this has been helpful

Dudes, it's completely stupid to have this kind of elections. There is no way you can say what guitarist is 'better'. One could easily argue that Paco de Lucia or john McLaughlin beats these guys completely. It's just a matter of genre, and even more a matter of taste. They're all inspiring musicians, so just let them inspire you, learn from them what you want to learn, have your favorite, but don't try to compare them with each other... Makes absolutely no sense at all.

I think you're forgetting something here - Page had with him a little guy called John Paul Jones who wrote most of Zep's complex riffs and arrangements, and Clapton had with him for much shorter a little guy named Jack Bruce who wrote and sang most of Cream's songs.
These two here are prime examples of guitarists who steal credit from their band members.
That said - Clapton is greater as a guitarist, Page is greater as a musician.

@CentraCross no, in fact, john paul jones wrote most of his stuff with keyboards (Carouselambra,Trampled Under Foot, No Quarter...) and jimmy is the one who wrote the music of all the songs of led zeppelin in this videos. btw do you relly think john paul jones would let jimmy steal his credit for all those years? and what about his work outside Led Zeppelin? did John write the riff of "Shake My Tree"? anyway show me where you read that.

cmon', clapton was an innovator in all the way. He was the first to attempt the 'gibson les paul plus marshall amp' in his album with john mayall, long before page. He was the first to form a rock group with no rythm guitar to make the bass and drums have more protagonism, think de LZ later copied. He could play incredible duos with Allman, Hendrix, Beck, while Page was always alone, cause he was a poser.

@gre1990 While most people think 'slowhand' goes for clapton being slow when playing, the actual reason is he used to take long time to change his strings when they broke during concerts.
And the nickname was idea of GIORGIO GOMELSKY, not Page.

i like how page dominated the first half of this video, cuz when clapton started playing, i knew right away that he is far superior. speed does not make a better guitarist. if that was the case then the guitarists from dragonforce are better than clapton, hendrix, page combined.

No sweat, Page easily.Clapton was great while he played with Cream and Blind Faith, but after that...Page in other hand, evolved miles and miles, making history in the greatest band of all times.While Clapton turned into a pop-radio beverage drink, sad but true.The great thing about Clapton is that he didn't got wasted, even in the late 90's he still had it.Jeff Beck still awesome and in better shape tho.But Page and Hendrix are the real GODS of rock.

Both can rock real hard, and both can play the blues real smooth. Eric has worked with and done shows with some of the best guitarist in history, I may be wrong, but i never remember him working with Jimmy, I would love to see the two together on stage.

@ledzepguitarcovers actually playing sloppy on guitar is an actual style. im sure you probably know that, but page was playing sloppy near the beginning of zep, not just near the end. of course his heroin addiction started catching up to his playing, and eventually he couldn't help but play sloppy because of it.
